1 ABOUT THE DASHBOARD Huon Aquaculture Our Sustainability Dashboard is inspired by our desire to help people better understand what we do. We ve tried to take all the questions we get asked and put the answers and measures up for all to see. We re proud of our farming practices, we re proud of the team that work with us and we re extremely proud of our products. That s why we want you to have accurate, current information about the way we farm, manage the welfare of our fish and our impact on the environment. About the Dashboard We live and work in our communities and we greatly value the trust placed in us to use and manage the resources of those regions. Kind regards, Peter and Frances Bender. FRESHNESS Freshness Time to Market NT - 48h WA h SA h TAS - 36h QLD h NSW h ACT h VIC - 36h At Huon we harvest our salmon at night. Our testing shows that the fish are more relaxed at night and it also allows us to get our salmon to you faster and fresher. We harvest from 1pm through until 2am using an RSPCA UK fish welfare accredited system developed in collaboration with us on our farms. It takes under two minutes for the fish to swim from the water, into the harvest system and then straight into a tanker full of ice slurry. The specially built tankers then make their way to our processing facility at Parramatta Creek in the north of Tasmania. The fish are processed the morning after harvest, packed and then loaded onto the Spirit for transport to Melbourne that afternoon. All of this means that we produce some of the freshest salmon available.

Some of our recent areas of which we are most proud are: Barrier technology - the roll out of new seal proof pens across our farm sites. This is still continuing at the moment and is a worldfirst design that keeps our fish safe and happy, our staff well protected and uses barrier technology to deny access to wildlife that co-inhabit the areas we operate in. Feed trials we are one of the leading companies in the world when it comes to research and development of fish feed. This research helps us understand what our fish need from their diets and has been a direct contributing factor to us becoming net protein producers (see the fish meal and fish oil tab on the dashboard for more information on this). Ship building we retain our own dedicated engineering team that build and maintain the majority of the Huon fleet. All complaints are dealt with swiftly. We pride ourselves on our customer service and willingness to go that extra mile. Huon Aquaculture We ve got a dedicated customer service team who are always available, along with end user representatives that are out and about every day to ensure that our customers are satisfied. If you need customer service, dial LEASE OCCUPATION Lease Occupation We know our fallowing process works, as an independent broad scale environmental monitoring program, recently reviewed by the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, found that there have been no negative environmental impacts on the water quality or seabed as a result of our farming operations. Sustainable Management Sustainably managing our impact on the environment is the cornerstone of our success in growing world class salmon. For our fish to grow and prosper they need to have excellent environmental conditions to live in. Because of this, we rest our seabeds by moving our pens around within our lease spaces to maintain the health of the sea floor. This process is known as fallowing. The numbers on the maps of the Huon and Macquarie Harbour regions represent the percentage of time that the specific lease area has been fallowed (or empty) in the last 12 months. Results to October 213. Numbers & Entries Like all farming operations we must operate in harmony with the environment and the other animals that call it home. As fish farmers in Tasmania our biggest challenge is living with seals. They are big (up to 45kg), smart and they seem to love salmon. We believe the solution to this is good barrier technology and as a result we ve invented a totally new, world first seal proof pen. Not only does it protect the seals and prevent them from gaining access to the pens below or above the water line, it keeps a greater distance between the fish and the seals and it ensures that our workers operate in a safe environment. We catalogue all seal sightings (or interactions as we call them) and then record them according to a number of factors; mainly sightings and entries (when a seal breaches a pen). Accidental deaths can be anything from a seal getting trapped in one of our nets whilst trying to breach a pen or simply a seal that is dying within our lease space. Our absolute last resort with persistent offenders (repeated entries into pens and representing a danger to our employees through aggressive behaviour) is to apply for them to be humanely put down. This is only ever done by a veterinarian and Parks and Wildlife strictly supervise and document the procedure. ANTIBIOTICS Antibiotics We take animal welfare very seriously at Huon so we go to great lengths to ensure our salmon live a low stress, healthy and happy life. Huon even has a full time veterinarian on staff to ensure the health and welfare of our fish is second to none. He consults and works with our farm staff every day to monitor the health of our fish and continually improve practices. Sometimes, just like people, our salmon get sick. If our vet feels there is a need to treat the fish with antibiotics for an illness you can rest assured that it is supervised, reported, strictly regulated by government, and that the antibiotics are allowed to pass through the fish long before it is harvested in accordance with regulatory requirements. 6 WATER TEMPERATURE Water Temperature 14 Growing Conditions Tasmania is the only place in Australia where the water temperature is ideal for growing salmon. The ideal water temperature range for our salmon is between degrees Celsius. Where environmental conditions are less than ideal, we use every tool at our disposal to minimise the stress on our fish. DISSOLVED OXYGEN Dissolved Oxygen Growing Conditions Salmon need a good supply of oxygen to keep their metabolism fueled. Having clean nets and good water flow on our lease sites is important. 7 FEED Feed The diets we feed our fish have to meet some special requirements and deliver in two main areas; firstly they need to provide the fish with enough energy to live and thrive; secondly they must supply all the nutrients (proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals) to grow. Our salmon need to eat a certain amount of fish meal and oil to ensure they are healthy and that they continue to be a good source of Omega 3. To put this in context, where one of our salmon needs the equivalent of 74g of wild fish for protein and 1.71kg of wild fish for oil for every kilogram of weight it has, a wild salmon will eat 1 kilograms of wild fish to obtain its protein and oil for every kilogram it weighs. Fish Meal & Fish Oil Feed Quantities Fish Meal Fish Oil * per kilogram of fish produced We re proud of the progress we ve made on the sustainability of our diets and we continue to trial new feeds. To be able to call ourselves net protein producers (we produce more fish than we use in our feed) is a big achievement but we re committed to being even more efficient in the future. Aside from fish meal and fish oil, our diets may contain wheat, soya derivatives, corn gluten, meat meal, poultry meals, blood meal, poultry oil, vegetable oil and vitamin and mineral supplements very similar to those taken by people. These ingredients share three key points; they are safe (they re often grown for human food or are the by-products of human food production); they are sustainable, reducing our reliance on marine sourced ingredients; and they are trace-able (we know exactly how they are produced and we can trace them to source). NET CLEANING Net Cleaning Cleaning & Antifoulants Having clean nets on all of our pens maintains good water flow which is vital to the health and wellbeing of our fish. Historically, we used antifouling paints on our nets similar to those used on the hull of a boat to prevent the growth of algae and invertebrates like mussels Antifouled Nets Total Number of Net Cleans in-situ *Total current number of nets 254 New technology now allows us to clean our nets in a mechanical, rather than a chemical way. This new process uses in-situ net cleaning robots to maintain the cleanliness of the nets. Think of these like a big creepy crawler that people use to clean the base of their swimming pool. F
