7 Role of ARNP (K.A.R ): Each Advanced Registered Nursing Practitioner (ARNP) shall function in an expanded role to provide primary, secondary, and tertiary health care in the ARNP s category of advanced practice. Each ARNP shall be authorized to make independent decisions about advanced practice nursing needs of families, patients, and clients and medical decisions based on the authorization for collaborative practice with one or more physicians. The immediate and physical presence of the physician is not required when care is given by an ARNP. Categories (K.A.R ): The four categories of advanced registered nurse practitioners recognized by the Kansas Board of Nursing include the following: Clinical Nurse Specialist Nurse Anesthetist Nurse Midwife Nurse Practitioner Functions: Nurse Practitioner (K.A.R ): o Provide health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, and independent nursing diagnosis of acute and chronic diseases o Develop and manage the medical plan of care for patients or clients, based on the authorization for collaborative practice o Provide health care services for which the nurse practitioner is educational prepared and for which competency has been established and maintained o Provide health care for individuals by managing health problems encountered by patients and clients o Provide innovation in evidence-based nursing practice based upon advanced clinical expertise, decision making, and leadership skills and serve as a consultant, researcher, and patient advocate for individuals, families, groups, and communities to achieve quality, cost-effective patient outcomes and solutions Nurse-Midwife (K.A.R ): o Provide independent nursing diagnosis o Develop and manage the medical plan of care for patients or clients, based on the authorization for collaborative practice o Provide health care services for which the nurse-midwife is educational prepared and for which competency has been established and maintained. 7
8 o Provide health care for women, focusing on gynecological needs, pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, care of the newborn, and family planning, including indicated partner evaluation, treatment, and referral for infertility and sexually transmitted diseases o Provide innovation in evidence-based nursing practice based upon advanced clinical expertise, decision making, and leadership skills and serve as a consultant, researcher, and patient advocate for individuals, families, groups, and communities to achieve quality, cost-effective patient outcomes and solutions Clinical Nurse Specialist (K.A.R ): o Provide independent nursing diagnosis o Develop and manage the medical plan of care for patients of clients, based on the authorization for collaborative practice o Provide health care services for which the CNS is educational prepared and for which competency has been established and maintained o Provide care for specific patients or clients or specific populations, or both, utilizing a broad base of advanced scientific knowledge, nursing theory, and skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating health and nursing care o Provide innovation in evidence-based nursing practice based upon advanced clinical expertise, decision making, and leadership skills and serve as a consultant, research, and patient advocate for individuals, families, groups, and communities to achieve quality, cost-effective patient outcomes and solutions Prescription order (K.A.R a): An ARNP is to follow a written protocol when prescribing, administering, or supplying a prescription-only drug. The ARNP ensures each protocol is reviewed by the ARNP and physician at least annually. Educational requirements for ARNPs (K.A.R ): All categories of advanced practice: Program completed after Jan 1, 1997 shall include three college hours in advanced pharmacology Program completed after Jan 1, 2001 nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist applicants shall have completed three college hours in advanced pathophysiology or its equivalent and three college hours in advanced health assessment Category specific requirements: Nurse Practitioner o Complete a formal, post basic nursing education program approved by the KSBN which prepares the nurse to function as a nurse practitioner. If completing a 8
9 program after July 1, 1994, the applicant shall hold a baccalaureate or masters degree in clinical nursing. If completing the program after July 1, 2002, the applicant shall hold a masters or higher degree in a clinical area of nursing Nurse midwife: o Complete a formal, post basic nursing education program approved by the KSBN which prepares the nurse to function as a nurse midwife. If completing a program after July 1, 2010, the applicant shall hold a master s degree or higher in nursing Clinical Nurse Specialist: o Complete a formal, post basic nursing education program approve by the KSBN which prepares the nurse to function as a clinical nurse specialist. If completing a program after July 1, 1994, the applicant shall hold a baccalaureate or masters degree in clinical nursing. If completing the program after July 1, 2002, the applicant shall hold a masters or higher degree in a clinical area of nursing. Certification: Certification is a process by which a nongovernmental agency validates, based upon predetermined standards, an individual nurse s qualifications for practice in a defined functional or clinical area of nursing. Most certification programs are created, sponsored, or affiliated with professional associations and trade organizations interested in raising standards. Certifications are earned through an assessment process and-in general, must be renewed periodically. Certification credentials are nationally recognized and portable.
