Adroit Research NVivo10 Workshop Notes GENERAL Create a new project My training project. *nvp file is stored in My Documents (default). Three views navigation, list and detail view. Detail view by default opens at the bottom you can move this to the right via the View menu. Like any Windows application, can hide, move and customize toolbars. At least three ways to do everything right mouse click, ribbon and shortcut keys. Ribbon interface logical grouping of functions Undo until the last save No redo! Save Reminder no autosave File/Options/Notifications to change timing of reminder Help is context sensitive F1 or? on dialog box (technical and conceptual help) Back up via File/Manage/Copy Project. Different to SaveAs in say MS Word in that current project is closed, a copy is made and then it reopens. Backup regularly in case your file corrupts. SOURCES Folders of sources can have multiple folder levels. These help with scoping your queries. Internals imports a copy of the source in the project (original still intact) Externals proxy to sources not physically possible to import (books, websites), you can make notes about them and code your notes Memos useful tool for making descriptive and theoretical notes about your work Create folders for Admin, Interviews, Datasets, Pictures and Literature. Import all interview documents (.docx) into the Interview folder. Import pdf files into the literature folder. Hint: you can also drag and drop documents between folders. You can also store your journal articles from your bibliography here. Import image files to picture folder Select portion of image / Make notes / Assign region to rows Import audio/video files to Interview folder also. Note: audio and video work in the same way. Media ribbon Transcribe mode / Play / Type notes / Stop Play speed/volume To playback Normal mode / Play transcript media will play selection Normal mode start selection / play / type notes / pause / stop selection / highlight row / RMB / assign region to rows / deselect / RMB / play transcript media / deselect / new selection) Import dataset (survey) to Dataset folder from.xls,.txt or ODBC connection to Access Note: Working with Survey Data is a separate module so Datasets are not covered comprehensively in the workshop. Sources are read-only by default need to click to edit or change to edit mode via home menu edit. Document properties (everything has properties) RMB 1 - can change name/description Memos These are a place to make notes about the data, they can be linked or standalone Create a memo for Notes about Barbara s interview description interview summary o o 1 Right mouse button Link to Barbara s interview RMB/memo link (green notepad appears link to more info) Create a new document in the Admin folder for Project Diary. Add date Home/Insert/Date-Time. Good practice to keep track of all of your work in NVivo and your thoughts about the data. Page 1
Externals A proxy to sources not physically able to be imported e.g. website, notes from a hard copy book, link to a file on your harddrive: Create an external to Web Link Create an external for a file on your harddrive to open automatically / Participant information.xls Create an external for notes about the Maxwell book (hard copy) separated by chapter Links Create an annotation (note to self like a sticky note) Barbara highlight got a job up north RMB / Links / Annotation / New Annotation / Where is up north? (blue annotated text) Relationships test out hunches, links two project items - New relationship type has an impact on / Nodes/Relationships/Add new relationship (From) Environmental Change / Tourism (To) Create a see also link to a portion of an item choose text to link to in Bernadette Copy via RMB / choose text to link from in Memo (thoughts about community) / Paste as See Also Link Hyperlink within text Select text Link / Hyperlink / New hyperlink NODES AND CODING Nodes a place to put like things akin to highlighter pens topics / concepts / themes Can move them around, merge, sort and rename very flexible. Think about your research question. Create new nodes for Fishing, Tourism, Environmental Change There are several different way to code - Drag and Drop, RMB, coding bar, ribbon the coding bar is very convenient and easy to use highlight text and select node or type new node in coding bar / button with green tick to code at selected node. Can also uncode in the same ways. Create new node (in coding bar auto suggest) named memorable quotes and code text there. Open Audio Interview with Helen - code from timeline and/or notes Code photo choose row of notes and code to take notes and part of the image Invivo coding choose phrase and code invivo (coding bar) then spread coding to get context Autocoding structured interviews/focus groups - Open Barbara, see the semi-structured interview. Need heading styles to take advantage of autocoding. Working with your Nodes Open tourism node to view coding see properties (RMB) and tabs on right give summaries of coding Visualise coding from a Source (Barbara) RMB / Visualise / Graph or Chart Coding View / Coding Stripes of Source (Barbara) View / coding stripes / nodes recently coding keep visible in source while coding to get visual confirmation of coding Move and Merge Nodes Cut environmental fieldwork node and merge with environmental change Rename and sort nodes. By default nodes are listed alphabetically View / Sort By / Custom Expand and Collapse (View menu - useful if you have a lot of node hierarchies). Export the tourism node as a html file / Export source no longer dependent on Nvivo to view data (can also export sources) Node hierarchies is it a sort of? Good advice! Some hints for exploring your coding further - Page 2
CLASSIFICATIONS Source Classifications - Create a source classification, classify a source, create an attribute, assign values to a source used for bibliographical data, or info about the interview e.g. date, interviewer etc. Node Classifications - Create a node classification (create pre defined), classify a node, create an attribute, assign a value) used for demographic data e.g. gender, age, location, salary Easiest way is to Import a Classification Sheet from excel. The help provides useful guidance on this. Can modify Attributes after import (rename NVivo defined values, delete, edit via attribute properties) View all items in a classification (Open Classification Sheet) Can change a value on the fly in the Classification sheet Hints for working with classifications GROUPING ITEMS - Sets and Search Folders Quick shortcut to project items - New Set Jenine s tasks Add to Set good for task delegation Sets are static lists of items / Search folders are dynamic lists (items automatically added) MODELS Navigation Models, Explore>New Dynamic Model. Tourism and Environmental Change. Undock View / Window / Docked via model ribbon Model / Add Project Items Add Tourism (under Economy) - Add Sources Coded Selected Associations Interviews. We want to visualise which sources are coded at this node Add Environmental Change (under Natural Environment) - Add a new shape How does tourism impact the environment? Add a connector from new shape to Tourism node. Can adjust layout, formatting, font, color. Convert shape to memo Create a relationship node from model Select Tourism and Environmental Change in model. Create>Items>Create As>Create Relationship. Set relationship type to Associated. Can see new relationship node in Nodes folder. Print, Export a model- External Data>Export>Export Model. Custom groups To see who conducted an interview select a source. Click Source Classifications, expand Interviews>Interviewer see interviewer checked. Show / hide to see interviews done by Henry, uncheck other interviewers under Visibility. Create a custom group Environmental Change. Add items to group and then show. Visualisations Use chart wizard Explore /Coding for a source (Barbara) /Coding for a node (tourism) RMB on a node / Visualise / Chart Coding for Node can also use on a source to chart coding Reports & Extracts - Node summary / Attribute summary / Coding summary useful. Fully customisable. Page 3
QUERIES Text Search Query and Word Frequency (do not need any coding done) Good way to set up concepts for coding no coding needs to exist to run a text search query or a word frequency query See the extensive help on queries Explore / New Query / Text Search fish Slider Create the results as a new node. By default, narrow (5 words either side) are displayed. See the word tree Save the query (name it) stored in the queries folder. Rerun at any time Run WF query on the interview folder only. See Tag Cloud (tabs). Save a word as a node via the Tag Cloud. It is then possible to work further with this saved node. Slider Moving the slider toward Similar will cause words to be grouped: Stemmed words. Instances of development will be grouped with instances of develop, developed, and developer. Synonyms. Instances of development would be grouped with words such as growth and evolution. Specializations. Instances of specific types of development would be grouped together, such as incubate and sprouting. Generalizations. Instances of broader categories which would include development are grouped together, such as age, growth and progress. Coding Query What memorable quotes have I found related to landscape? Advanced Tab Memorable Quotes AND ANY Landscape (under Natural Environment node) Difference between AND and ANY. Last Run Query - Remove Memorable Quotes and add Age Group equals Matrix Search Query Good for comparisons based on classifications of your data How do people of different age groups discuss the natural environment of the Down East region? Rows = Age Group Columns = Natural Environment Nodes don t choose parent as this is aggregated! Change cell to Sources coded Change cell shading to colour - Show Shading View Coded text Chart tab on right Other Queries Basic Find how to find my node (looks at the name of items, not within items) Compound Query multiple criteria combination of coding and text search query. Example: find fishing within material coded at Policy Management. Coding comparison Query - compare coding of two researchers based on one interview and a scoped set of nodes Working with Framework Matrices Page 4
What now? How do I get started? Hints from Kath McNiff from QSR Your desk is tidy. NVivo is installed, activated and ready to go. Your mouse is poised. What now? Starting can be the hardest part of any project but here are 10 ideas to help you get you up and running: 1. Use the learning resources especially the Getting Started Guide ( tutorials ( and online help ( nv9- en.qsrinternational.com/nv9_help.htm). 2. Start now don t wait until you have collected all the data. Import your research design, grant application, thesis proposal or literature. 3. Make a project journal ( #procedures/create_and_edit_documents.htm) in NVivo - state your research questions and record your goals. Why are you doing the project? What is it about? What do you expect to find and why? What biases do you bring to the project? Update the journal regularly to stay focused and to show the evolution of your project. 4. Make a model ( for your preliminary ideas. Show the relationships or patterns you expect to find in your data based on prior experience or preliminary reading. 5. Import your interviews, field notes, focus groups, pictures, video or survey datasets. Organize them into folders for easy access. 6. Set up an initial node structure based on your early ideas - you could run a Word Frequency Query ( en.qsrinternational.com/procedures/run_a_word_frequency_query.htm) over your data to tease out the common terms. 7. Set up nodes for the people, places or other cases in your project watch the video tutorial ( to see how. 8. Explore your material and code themes ( as they emerge. 9. Get in the habit of making regular back-ups ( en.qsrinternational.com/procedures/save_and_copy_projects.htm). 10. Let yourself be informed, redirected and surprised by your data.
