2 1. Plicy 2. Purpse It is the plicy f the University f the Pacific (Pacific) t prvide its emplyees with a safe and healthful wrkplace. In rder t achieve this gal, all levels f management and supervisin are required t ensure that the guidelines f this Plan are fllwed This dcument has been designed t: Implement a system that prvides a cnsistent apprach t respnding t medical and infectius waste and Ensure that the Three Fundamental Objectives f the Pacific Medical Waste Management Prgram are effectively pursued The Three Fundamental Objectives are: Striving fr an Injury and Illness free wrkplace. Identifying and eliminating peratinal deficiencies that can lead t injuries, illnesses, and/r fatalities. Maintaining a practive and effective Safety Prgram (e.g., pen cmmunicatin between emplyee and supervisr, emplyee health and safety training, regularly scheduled inspectins, accident and injury investigatin). 3. Scpe 3.1. This dcument applies t all persnnel under the direct supervisin f a Pacific emplyee (i.e., Temprary Emplyees, Temprary Agency Emplyees, Part time Emplyees, Full time Emplyees, Student Assistants, Federal Wrk Study, Graduate Assistants, etc.). All persnnel shall cmply with the prvisins utlined in this dcument. 4. 4 5. Prcedure fr Bimedical Waste Management 5.0 Intrductin 5.1 The Office f Risk Management: has prepared these guidelines t assist the campus cmmunity in safely and legally managing medical waste. Federal, state, and lcal laws and regulatins gvern hw medical waste must be managed. 5.2 Risk Management: has reviewed and apprved these guidelines and will revise these guidelines whenever there are significant changes in medical waste regulatins r medical waste management safety cncerns. Cntact safety fficers at either r if yu have any questins regarding medical waste management. 5.3 These guidelines apply t anyne wh generates medical waste r manages a medical waste pick-up lcatin. Thse wh generate medical waste shuld becme familiar with all sectins f these guidelines. Thse wh are respnsible nly fr managing a medical waste pick-up lcatin shuld be familiar with Sectins 5, 6, and Segregating Medical Waste in a Labratry Segregating yur wastes at the pint f generatin is ne f the mst imprtant steps in prperly managing yur wastes. Fllwing these rules will help t ensure yu are nt prducing undesirable mixtures that may be difficult r expensive t get rid f: D nt cmbine medical waste with hazardus chemicals r radiactive waste Separate sharps waste frm ther medical wastes Separate pathlgy wastes frm ther medical wastes Separate chemtherapy wastes frm ther medical wastes Separate all pharmaceuticals frm ther wastes. 5.5 Prperly Cntaining Medical Waste in a Labratry As with all labratry waste, medical waste must be placed in a prperly labeled cntainer as sn as it is generated. Sharps Waste Place sharps waste in puncture-resistant cntainers labeled with the wrds "Sharps Waste" r with the internatinal bihazard symbl and the wrd "Bihazard." 5 Fill cntainers t marked level. D nt verfill. D nt place packaging r paper twels r nn-sharps waste in sharps cntainers. Clse sharps cntainers when they are full. Bihazardus Waste Place bihazardus waste in red bihazard bags labeled with the wrds "Bihazardus Waste" r with the internatinal bihazard symbl and the wrd "Bihazard." D nt use range bags, even if they are labeled fr bihazardus waste. Place bihazard bags, even if they cntain nly a small amunt f bihazardus waste, in a prper secndary cntainer. Secndary cntainers must be: rigid leak-resistant equipped with a tight-fitting cver kept clean and in gd repair (d nt accept any cntainers frm vendr that are dirty r in disrepair). labeled "Bihazardus Waste" r Pathlgy Waste with the internatinal bihazard symbl and the wrd "Bihazard" n the lid and n the sides f the cntainer. Keep secndary cntainers clsed unless waste is being added t the bag. D nt use clth hampers r wire racks as secndary cntainers. Cntact Risk Management t btain specially labeled cntainers fr pathlgy r ther types f medical waste. 5.6 Drain-Dispsable Medical Waste Sme liquid medical wastes, such as human bld, may be dispsed f in a labratry sink if the waste is first autclaved r brught t a final cncentratin f 1 percent bleach. The fllwing medical wastes may nt be drain dispsed even if they have been treated with bleach r autclaved: Human r animal cultures suspected f cntaining infectius agents Cultures and stcks f infectius agents Wastes frm the prductin f infectius bacteria, viruses, spres, discarded live and attenuated vaccines 5.7 Medical Waste Pick-up T ensure yur medical waste is picked up, please cntact Risk Management fr pick up. Yu may hand-carry full sharps cntainers (they shuld be clsed) t a predetermined designated site fr dispsal, r keep them in the area where they are used. Bihazardus waste must be transprted in an uter secndary cntainer, labeled as described abve in Sectin 5. Pharmaceuticals and medicines shall be Page 5 f 8 Versin 1 (January 2014)

6 placed in Risk Management (RM) prvided plastic cntainer and be secured. When full, cntact RM fr pickup. This particular waste is incinerated by an utside vendr If waste is transprted t a predetermined lcatin fr strage, make sure cntainers are lined with a red bihazard bag (except sharps). Clse the cntainer securely after yu depsit yur waste. Designated pick-up lcatins must be adequately secured t prevent animals r unauthrized individuals frm cming in cntact with the waste. 5.8 Medical Waste Pick-Up Lcatins Lcatins fr pick up f bimedical wastes, pharmaceuticals, sharps are Bilgy, secnd flr. Frm the Pharmacy & Health Sciences (PHS) Building, the freezer in basement, 90 day strage shed in Pharmacy, frm the secnd flr f the Dental Clinic, Cwell Wellness Center, Athletics bldg, and frm the physical therapy anatmical lab. Other lcatins may cme n-line with new research r the relcatin f a faculty member t anther labratry. 5.9 Decntaminating Medical Waste Cntainers The law requires that all secndary medical waste cntainers be kept clean and in gd repair. These include labratry and cntractr-supplied cntainers at pick-up lcatins. Cntainers frm any vendr shuld nt be accepted unless in gd cnditin Medical Waste Spills Medical waste spills must be cleaned up immediately. Any spilled medical waste and all assciated cntaminated cleanup debris must be handled as medical waste. Any cntaminated area must be decntaminated by ne f the apprved methds listed in Sectin 5. Medical Waste is: Bihazardus Waste--waste (including animal carcasses) cntaminated with infectius agents knwn t cause human illness and nt cntaminated with radiactive materials r hazardus chemicals. 8 Bihazardus Sharps Waste--devices capable f cutting r piercing that are cntaminated with bihazardus waste. Examples include cntaminated hypdermic needles, scalpels, razr blades, and X-act blades Pathlgy Waste--recgnizable human anatmical parts and fixed human surgery specimens and tissues Chemtherapy Waste--waste such as glves, twels, empty bags, and intravenus tubing that cntains r is cntaminated with chemtherapeutic agents Pharmaceutical wastes waste medicines Nn-Medical Waste that is managed as medical waste at Pacific includes: Nn-Medical Sharps Waste--devices capable f cutting r piercing that are nt cntaminated with radiactive, chemical, r bihazardus waste. Handle the same as bihazardus sharps Animal Carcasses nt cntaminated with infectius agents knwn t cause human illness--handle in the same manner as bihazardus waste. This cnservative methd f management is necessary t prtect custdial wrkers and t reduce public cncern. The additinal cst t manage these wastes as "medical waste" is minimal Medical Waste des nt include: Radiactive Waste r mixtures that cntain radiactive cmpnents Chemical Waste r mixtures f chemical and medical waste Bitechnlgy Waste, which is nt a medical, chemical, r radiactive waste, but has the appearance f a labratry waste; examples f bitechnlgy wastes include plant bacteria and viruses and cultures used in fd prductin--use the white autclavable bags labeled "Nn-Medical Waste," steam sterilize and dispse f in regular trash Brken Glass nt cntaminated with bihazardus, chemical, r radiactive waste-- package in a sturdy cardbard bx, tape clsed, label as "Brken Glass," and dispse f in regular trash.
