3 Student Worksheet: Before Viewing the Program 1. T chart In small groups complete a T chart on the advantages and disadvantages of the internet as a tool for information. Discuss these responses as a class. 2. Guest speaker Organize a guest speaker such as a school counselor or the police to discuss legal, emotional and social internet use issues. 3. Class research Research what laws are in place to protect individuals while using the internet. 4. Voicing your opinions As a class, have an imaginary continuum line (from strongly agree to strongly disagree) across the classroom floor, students place themselves on the line depending on their personal views on the below statements: a) The internet is a good way to make new friends. b) I can tell if the person I am talking to on line is a sexual predator. c) Putting down a classmate on Facebook is harmless. d) Meeting internet friends face to face is always safe. e) On line blogs are a good way to inform others about me. f) On line bullies should be dealt with by the law

7 After Viewing the Program 1. Informative Piece Design an informative piece to give others information about the internet and staying safe. This could be in the form of a poster, pod cast, comic strip, written speech, pamphlet, Power point etc. 2. Class debate As a class, debate the topic Information on the internet should be accessible to all with no restrictions 3. Role Play As a class write a list of all the issues surrounding internet use. In small groups choose a scenario and put together a role play. Complete the role play twice once with a positive ending and another with a negative ending. 4. 8 Suggested Student Responses While Viewing the Program 1. What are some of the personal risks taken when using the internet? Bullying, crime, propaganda, false information, predators etc 2. Why would a perspective employer use a public social networking site such as Facebook to find out information about you? It can show your morals, beliefs, behaviors, values (racist, sexist etc) language used (swearing), pictures and hate clubs. 3. Compare the different laws around the globe when using the internet Western countries have more relaxed laws, where as in some countries it is illegal to have views about the government i.e. Thailand, China and Korea. 4. Define online grooming. Gaining the confidence of the victim such as asking about where you live, family and friends 5. How do people fall victim to online predators? Predators use tricks and props such as the latest music, fashion, slang, abbreviations, and sayings to lead the victim into a false sense of security. 6. Why do young people enjoy chatting to strangers on line? They enjoy the thrill of online chatting and being anonymous. They may feel isolated at school or home and the internet fills this void. 7. List some of the ways you can meet online friend s safely face to face. Meet in public and always take someone that you know and trust with you. Make sure it s on your terms and you are safe and comfortable with it. 8. What is Phishing? Phishing lures people into providing financial information or payment for non existing products e.g. bank passwords a) How is it done and what do these sites look like? These sites replicate large banks and auction houses such as EBay. They use slightly different colors and graphics. They ask for your personal details such as passwords and bank account details. 9. Fill in the gaps: Fill in the gaps: Cookies are personalized identification tags that are imbedded into your browser when you surf the net. They can obtain your passwords and addresses. 10. Usually individuals are invited to join and then the victim is invited and will see the cruel messages. 15. List some strategies for victims of cyber bullying Tell a friend, counselor or teacher Reduce internet use Drop the mouse and take 5 and think about your response 16. Why may someone bully online?
