1 Neuton Solar Power Diverter Quick Installation Guide Product Description Important Note: The NSPD is designed to operate heating elements of 3kW maximum. The Neuton Solar Power Diverter (NSPD) is designed to work with a solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and a hot water cylinder to maximise the potential of the solar PV system. By measuring the level of exported electricity, and the temperature of the hot water cylinder, the NSPD will intelligently heat the cylinder at the level of excess electricity available. Tempering valves ensure that the hot water at the point of delivery does not exceed reach scalding temperature. The NSPD will heat the cylinder to either 72 deg. C, or the setting of the element thermostat, whichever is the lower. Check which phase the solar PV is installed on Check which phase the hot water cylinder is installed on Note: The solar system and hot water cylinder element must be on the same phase, and not disconnected via e.g. controlled circuits.

2 Determine where to locate the NSPD (2 options, see next section) Determine the wiring route you will follow Install the NSPD following the wiring diagram in this guide Installation Locations To mount the system there are two location options: Option 1) Install the NSPD near to the hot water cylinder. If the cylinder cupboard layout allows, this may be the easier option. The clamp will need to be extended to the switch board, via CAT5e or similar cable. Refer to the Solar Power Diverter Mounting Next To Hot Water Cylinder Connection Diagram. Option 2) Install the NSPD near to the switchboard. If the cylinder cupboard layout is restrictive for NSPD installation, install the NSPD near to the switchboard. The thermostat probe wire will need to be extended to the water cylinder, via CAT5e or similar cable. Refer to the Solar Power Diverter Mounting Next To Switchboard Connection Diagram.

3 Cylinder Element Thermostat To maximise hot water storage, and effectiveness of the NSPD, set the element thermostat to the rated temperature setting of the cylinder. Do not exceed this temperature. Temperature Probe Position The optimal position for the NSPD temperature probe, is approximately 5-10cms to the left or right and above the lower (if multiple elements are installed) heating element. Insert the probe in between the insulation and metal surface of the cylinder. Clamp Direction Test Procedure For both installation scenarios, you must use the following test procedure to determine if the export clamp is installed in the correct direction: 1. Switch off the solar PV system. 2. Turn off as many appliances as possible. 3. Turn on a single large load (has to be on the same circuit/phase), such as a jug/kettle. 4. Observe the left column of the bottom line of the display. This should show a - figure, e.g This indicates that the load is drawing from the grid. If that figure shows a positive value, e.g then the clamp is in the wrong direction. Simply unclip the clamp and turn it around. 5. Return the solar PV system to working order. Operating Parameters There are a number of simple rules that control how the Neuton Solar Power Diverter functions: Minimum Temperature: 40 deg. C. If the cylinder falls below this temperature, the Power Diverter will feed power to the cylinder at the full rating until this temperature is reached. At this temperature, normal operation will resume. Maximum Temperature: 72 deg. C. If the cylinder reaches this temperature, the Power Diverter ceases to heat the cylinder. Any excess solar power not used elsewhere in the property will be exported to the grid. Note that the cylinder cannot be heated any higher than the thermostat control for the heating element, e.g. if this is set to 65 Deg. C, this will be maximum attainable by the cylinder. Anti-Legionnaires (Min Health): If the cylinder has not reached 60 deg. C. in a 72 hour period, the Power Diverter will heat the cylinder until this temperature is reached.

4 The Rotary Switch Operation of the rotary switch determines the mode of the Neuton Solar Power Diverter, and how the cylinder is heated. For normal operation, leave the switch set to Auto. Auto: The Power Diverter will control the power to your cylinder. This should be the default position Off: No power from the grid or PV system will supply your cylinder. The cylinder will not be heated. Manual: The Power Diverter is bypassed. Your cylinder will be heated directly from the grid. Select this option if you wish to boost your cylinder temperature.

7 Troubleshooting Checklist Depending on the nature of the issue encountered with the Solar Power Diverter (SPD), you may find the following useful. Note: This guide is intended for electricians. Note: The items below can be reviewed in any order. Reboot the Solar Power Diverter: If the SPD display is showing confusing information, turn off the SPD by switching the rotary switch to Manual. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the switch back to Auto. This will reboot the SPD and clear the various registers. Are all the switches on?: If the heating element is not operational at all, some of the switches supplying the heating element may have been turned off. Check: 1. The MCB supplying the heating element in the distribution board. 2. The 3 way switch controlling the SPD is set to Auto. 3. If there is a switch directly supplying the hot water element after the 3-way rotary switch, this should be switched on also. Solar PV system and Hot Water cylinder connection: If the left figure in the middle line of the display generally only shows either 0W or 3000W (or at the rating of the heating element), then it is quite possible the solar PV system and hot water element are not on the same circuit/phase. Check that they are on the same circuit/phase, and/or that the hot water element is not on a controlled circuit. Element thermostat: There are two things to check concerning the element thermostat: 1. The thermostat should be set to around 70 deg C., for maximum SPD benefit. 2. Check that the element thermostat is functioning correctly. To do this turn the 3-way rotary switch to Manual, turn the element thermostat control towards the maximum temperature until it activates (clicks). Measure the current draw using a clamp meter; it should show a current draw that relates to the element capacity. Note: Do not set the element thermostat to be greater than the rating of the cylinder. Temperature probe position: If the temperature on the display does not vary to any great amount, the probe may have slipped out of its original position. Check that the temperature probe is located underneath the cylinder insulation, against the metal surface of the cylinder, about 5 10cms above the heating element, and the same distance to the left or right of the element.

8 Troubleshooting Checklist (cont.) Position of the clamp: The clamp should either be: 1. On the load side out of the meter, or 2. On the phase/line cable to the meter from the distribution board. Direction of the clamp: Generally, the arrow on the clamp should be pointing towards the meter. However, there are some situations, e.g. whereby the clamp cable has been extended, where the clamp direction should be reversed. Perform the following simple test to check that the clamp is facing in the correct direction: 1. Switch off the solar PV system. 2. Turn off as many appliances as possible. 3. Turn on a single large load (has to be on the same circuit/phase), such as a jug/kettle. 4. Observe the left column of the bottom line of the display. This should show a - figure, e.g This indicates that the load is drawing from the grid. If that figure shows a positive value, e.g then the clamp is in the wrong direction. Simply unclip the clamp and turn it around 5. Return the solar PV system to working order. Blank display: If the SPD display is blank when the 3-way switch is set to Auto, and all other relevant switches are switched on, then shine a light on to the display. 1. If figures are visible, then the jumper at the back of the display circuit board may have slipped slightly. Remove the front part of the SPD, and adjust the jumper until the display shows full visibility again. 2. If nothing is visible, then your unit may be faulty. Contact your supplier.
