What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic is an integrative therapy whereby the philosophy posits that the body has an organizing and intelligent life energy that maintains them in dynamic existence within their environment and allows for self-regulating and self-healing. This intelligent life energy is also known as innate intelligence - it is what separates a living organism from a dead one and is not restricted to the human body. Any organism with a spinal column can benefit from chiropractic care. Our bodily functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body. Chiropractic comes from the Greek work Chiropraktikos, meaning done by hand. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine, and pelvis) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. What is a Subluxation? The master control system to maintain coordination and communication of all cells, tissues and organs is the nervous system. The nervous system is encased in the skull and spine for protection of the brain and spinal cord, respectively. The spine, spinal cord and its protective coverings (meninges) function as a unit, with multiple attachments to each other. Dynamic movement of the joints of the spinal column is the key to overall health and vitality. The loss of dynamic spinal movement and physiological function creates a condition called subluxation. Subluxations may occur from trauma, composition (how the body is built), transportation, birthing difficulties, lack of movement, performance, repetitive wear and tear on joints, and degeneration, to name a few. When a subluxation is present, it can cause malfunction of the tissue and organ function throughout the body. When the spine is free of subluxations, the body can function and perform to its optimum potential, improving communication, coordination and control of the body as well as enabling the body s innate intelligence for self-healing. What do Chiropractors do, and what is an adjustment? Chiropractors examine the spine for subluxations and deliver a chiropractic adjustment specific to the subluxation in order to restore normal spinal movement and to re-establish the function and activation of the nervous system. A chiropractic adjustment is a high-velocity, low-amplitude force applied to a subluxation in a precise direction and acts as a reboot to the central nervous system in order to bring it back to a base level of function. There are many ways to adjust the spine. Usually the chiropractors hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and accurate thrust. Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others require a slow, constant or indirect pressure. 2
Why do I need Chiropractic? The answer to why you need a chiropractor depends on you. If aches and pains, injuries, sprains and strains, or any other problem involving you muscle, joints and nervous system are affecting you from leading your life to the fullest, chiropractic care can help. Injuries to the spine can happen at any stage of your life and for various reasons. Even simple everyday tasks have the potential to cause pain or discomfort. Oftentimes, these mild discomforts are bearable, however, it is when these aches and pains prevent everyday activity that it becomes hindering. Generally, mild aches and pains will subside with the body s natural healing, but can return, often worse, at any given time. It is when these discomforts are mild, or even prior to occurring as a preventative measure, that it is best to see the Chiropractor. Even after all pains and aches have subsided, continual chiropractic maintenance is recommended to prevent future occurrences. Is Chiropractic safe for Children? Since significant trauma can occur at birth, many parents choose to have their newborns checked for spinal health related problems. Later, learning to walk, riding a bicycle, and other childhood activities can cause spinal health related problems. While a bandage and some comforting words can help a skinned knee, the potential underlying structural damage to the child s spine, skull, pelvis and extremities is the unique domain of a chiropractor. Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off as growing pains may be able to be traced to the spine. Regular chiropractic checkups may be able to identify these problems and help avoid some of the health complaints seen later in adults. Naturally, Chiropractic procedures are modified to a child s spine, particularly babies. Do Chiropractic adjustments hurt? Adjustments are usually pain free, but may be slightly uncomfortable, depending on the amount of swelling, tension, and inflammation present. Most patients feel immediate relief from the pain they have been experiencing, but some may feel a little tenderness following the adjustment. This is completely normal and is not an indication that anything went wrong during the adjustment. The goal of every chiropractor is to alleviate any present discomfort, not cause more pain, and to restore a properly functioning nervous system. 3

My parents introduced my brothers and myself to chiropractic care when we were very young and it s been an instrumental part of my life. I believe that it allowed me to do gymnastics when I was very little and allowed me to stay in sports and lead a very active lifestyle. I think it s natural to have aches and pains when you bend your body in directions it wasn t necessarily meant to [be bent in], so it makes sense to go to a chiropractor to get my body back in alignment. Ever since I can remember, I ve gone to a chiropractor. Jerry Rice Wide Receiver San Francisco 49ers, 3 time Superbowl Champion and Superbowl MVP I did a lot of things to stay in the game, but regular visits to my chiropractor were among the most important. Tom Brady Quarterback New England Patriots, 3 time Superbowl Champion and 2 time Superbowl MVP Chiropractic just makes you feel so much better. Reggie Bush Running back Miami Dolphins As a professional athlete, I am highly competitive only accept the best. When it comes to healthcare, chiropractic is an essential service. It keeps my on-field performance at its highest level and contributes to the success of the entire team. 5
Chiropractic and children Chiropractic and your child: Chiropractors are wellness experts and can advise you on all components of living a wellness lifestyle. Is it important for them to be checked regularly for the presence of vertebral subluxations, removing nervous system interference and allowing your child s body to express its full healing potential. If you have any concerns about the skeletal development of your, child your chiropractor may also be able to help. Primary & secondary curves of the spine: Primary curves: The kyphotic curves in the thoracic spine and sacral spine develop before birth to allow room for the organs in the abdomen and pelvis. These curves will contribute to the C-shape curves present at birth and during the first few months of life. Secondary curves: The lordotic curves in the cervical spine and lumbar spine develop as babies learn to lift their heads up and begin to walk.these curves will contribute to the eventual formation of the fully mature adult spine with four curvatures. 6
Spinal development in children The basics of spinal development An infant s spine will double in size in their first 2 years. This is the structure that provides protection to the nervous system. Sine the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves are responsible for you child s immune, digestion, elimination and respiratory system, it s important these structures develop properly to promote best health and functioning. The integrity of the spine s integral to how your baby heals, functions and ultimately, how healthy they are. A fully developed spine will have 4 curves; these form as a developing skeletal structure adapts to gravity. Infants are born with inly C-shape curve which develops in utero and persists for the first few months of their lives. Your newborn will tuck their legs into a frog leg position, thighs pulling up towards the chest. This foetal tuck maintains the primary curve which reduces the pressure on the spine and hips and is also the most calming position for your new baby. They will use less oxygen, conserve energy, waste fewer calories and digest food better. This is also the best position for regulating body temperature. A baby that is left in a container of any sort (bassinet, car seat, swing, etc.) for any length of time will have gravity adding extra pressure to a developing cervical spine. This may flatten or straighten the cervical curve which causes a decrease in muscle tone of the entire body. The cervical lordosis develops in the first few months as the posterior neck muscles get stronger to hold the head up againts gravity. The lumbar lordosis develops between 6-12 months as babies begin cross crawling and cruising. Eventually when all four curvatures have developed they can support themselves upright while walking. Stage 1 Infants are born with only on C-shape curvature in their spine 7
Stage 2 The Cervical Lordosis develops in the first few months as the posterior neck muscles get stronger to hold the head up against gravity Stage 3 The Lumbar Lordosis develops between 6-12 months as babies start cross crawling and cruising Stage 4 Eventually when all four curvatures have developed they can support themselves upright while walking 8
