1 Warsaw University of Technology Guidebook 1. Information about Warsaw Warsaw (in Polish Warszawa) is the capital of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River, roughly 260 kilometres (160 mi) from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometres (190 mi) from the Carpathian Mountains. Its population in 2010 was estimated at 1,716,855 residents with a greater metropolitan area of 2,631,902 residents, making Warsaw the 10th most populous city proper in the European Union. Photos by Internet Warsaw is also known as the phoenix city due to the fact it has survived many wars throughout its history. Most notably, the city had to be painstakingly rebuilt after the extensive damage it suffered from World War II, during which 80% of its buildings were destroyed. Warsaw's climate is humid continental with cold winters and warm summers, on the border with an oceanic climate. The average temperature is 3 C (27 F) in January and 19.3 C (66.7 F) in July. Temperatures may often reach 30 C (86 F) in the summer. Yearly rainfall averages 495 millimetres (19.5 in), wettest month is July. Spring and autumn are usually beautiful seasons, the former crisp and sunny and full of blooms and the latter alternately sunny and misty, and cool but not cold. Warsaw's mixture of architectural styles reflects the turbulent history of the city and country. During WWII, Warsaw was razed to the ground by bombing raids and planned destruction. After liberation, rebuilding began as in other cities of the communist-ruled PRL. Most of the historical buildings were thoroughly reconstructed. However, some of the buildings from the 19th century that had been preserved in reasonably reconstructible form were nonetheless eradicated in the 1950s and 1960s (e.g. Leopold Kronenberg Palace). Mass residential blocks were erected, with basic design typical of Eastern bloc countries. Public spaces attract heavy investment, so that the city has gained entirely new squares, parks and monuments. Warsaw's current urban landscape is one of modern and contemporary architecture. 1/19

2 Like many cities in Central and Eastern Europe, infrastructure in Warsaw suffered considerably during communism. However, over the past decade it has seen many improvements due to solid economic growth, an increase in foreign investment as well as funding from the European Union. In particular, the city's underground transit system, roads, sidewalks, health care facilities and sanitation facilities have improved markedly. Today, Warsaw has some of the best medical facilities in Poland and Central Europe. The city is home to the Children's Memorial Health Institute, the highest-reference hospital in all of Poland, as well as an active research and education canter. While the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute of Oncology it is one of the largest and most modern oncological institutions in Europe. The clinical section is located in a 10-floor building with 700 beds, 10 operating theatres, an intensive care unit, several diagnostic departments as well as an outpatient clinic. 2. Practical Information 2.1. Visa Information Please find below the link to the list of Polish Embassies- search. Please also find below the link regarding the information how to obtain Polish visa: Airport information There are two Airports in Warsaw Chopin Airport - The best way to travel from the Chopin Airport to the centre of the city is to use the bus number 175, which goes straight from the Airport. Below you can find the detailed route of this bus with bus stops names: If you plan to take the taxi from the Airport, it is advisable to ask the driver about the price in advance and take his confirmation on paper. Some drivers may be dishonest and may charge you much more that it really costs to get to the Centre. The driver companies recommended by the Chopin Airport are: Name Telephone Website ELE SKY TAXI SUPER TAXI SAWA TAXI The taxi fare from the airport to the city centre is approx. PLN 40 (10 Euro). 2/19

3 The second one is Airport in Modlin: On the following website you can find the offer of transport from the Modlin Airport to Warsaw. Please be aware that some taxi drivers and also bus drivers may be dishonest, so it is always advisable to ask the driver to write you on the piece of paper how much the drive will cost. The taxi fare from the Airport ranges from 99 zł zł for the course in one direction The weather The climate has four seasons- spring, summer, autumn and winter. Poland has a moderate climate with both maritime and continental elements. This is due to humid Atlantic air which collides over its territory with dry air from the Eurasian interior. As a result, the weather tends to be capricious and the seasons may look quite different in consecutive years. This is particularly true for winters, which are either wet, of the oceanic type, or - less often - sunny, of the continental type. Generally, in north and west Poland the climate is predominantly maritime, with gentle, humid winters and cool, rainy summers, while the eastern part of the country has distinctly continental climate with harsh winters and hotter, drier summers. 12 8.3. Private Accommodation If you are interested in private accommodation, please read the below information. ATTENTION If you are non-eu Citizen and your visa expires before the end of your study, you will be obliged to legalize your stay in Poland. One of the condition to do it is to have the confirmation of temporary accommodation in Poland (zaświadczenie o zameldowaniu). In fact the owner of the flat usually does not agree to ask for such document for the tenant, so if you plan to legalize your stay I recommend you to find the place in student s dormitory. However if you decide to rent the flat please read the below information carefully. Private accommodation Most of advertisements regarding renting a flat in Warsaw are serviced by real estate agencies. When you use the service of the real estate agency you must remember about the following thing: You can use the service of any agency in Warsaw and you are not OBLIGED to pay ANYTHING to the Agency before it find you a flat and you will sign the tenancy contract. If the agency requires any payments earlier- change the agency, because it is dishonest. Most agencies want to sing so called in Polish- Umowa pośrednictwa najmu/wynajmu, in English this means that you give the agency the right to find a flat on behave of you. When the agency finds you a flat and you sign the contract with the landlord you are obliged to pay the agency the commission usually from 50% to 100% of monthly rent. The amount of commission should be stated in the contract with the agency. Keep in mind that the commission is usually negotiable. Remember that you can sign the contact Umowa pośrednictwa najmu/wynajmu with many agencies, not only one. However you must be aware that if you actually find the flat and sign the tenancy agreement with the landlord, you must inform all other agencies, that you do not need their assistance any more. It is advisable then to receive from other agencies the confirmation of contract cancellation. While signing the contract please pay your attention to the words umowa na wyłączność/ na zasadach wyłączności, becasue this means that you ensure the agency an exclusive right to find you the flat and you CAN NOT use service of any other agency. TENANCY AGREEEMENT WITH THE LANDLORD Usually you are obliged to pay one monthly rent as deposit (called in Polish "kaucja"). This amount will be returned to you after you left the flat (assuming no damage was caused to it) Every legal owner of the flat is obliged to pay so called czynsz administracyjny. Remember to ask the owner if this payment is included in the whole rent. You may discover that a flat which should cost you 1000 zlotych, costs in fact 1400, because the administrative rent is 400 and this is your additional cost. Remember that you should also add the costs of living like: telephone, Internet, electric heating, etc. The payment for using hot and cold water, garbage and lift is usually included in the administrative rent, but in many flats there is a water meter. The "administrative rent" is usually paid to a manager company or one of tenants responsible for the management over the building. You have the right to receive from the owner invoices regarding the payments- to check the actual use of energy, water etc. Remember that in case of any doubts you can always pick up some Polish student to help you with the tenancy agreement. You also have the right to ask for the electronic version of the agreement to be sent in advance on your address. 12/19
