May 2014 Issue 27 FAEIS For the April newsletter we explored the ethnicity breakdown for undergraduate students enrolled in colleges and departments of agriculture. The analysis for this newsletter included student enrollment for 137 Land-grant and non-land grant higher education colleges and universities across the country. We first explored the overall ethnicity trends for agriculture programs for the reporting years of 2004 to Figure 1 shows the baccalaureate enrollment with respect to ethnicity for minority students compared to non-minority students. Based on our analyses we found the following results. From 2004 to 2012, Caucasian students increased by 18,508 students (24%). 2 Enrollment Headcount Enrollment Headcount We then explored the Baccalaureate enrollment for minority undergraduate students by ethnicity (Figure 2). Based on our analyses, we found the following results for undergraduate enrollment from 2004 to The enrollment of Hispanic students increased by 6,018 students (126%). The enrollment of African-American students increased by 3,092 students (55%). The enrollment of Asian students increased by 2534 students (74%). Figure 2. Native American Native Hawaiian We explored the Baccalaureate enrollment for minority students at different types of colleges and universities. We investigated minority undergraduate enrollment at 1862 Land-grant colleges and universities, 1890 Land-grant colleges and universities, and non-land-grant colleges and universities (Figure 3). Based on our analyses we found the following results for undergraduate enrollment from 2004 to student enrollment at 1862 Land-grant colleges and universities increased by 10,054 students (97%). student enrollment at non-land-grant colleges and universities increased by 2,204 students (134%). student enrollment at 1890 Land-grant colleges and universities increased by 1169 students (42%). 3 Enrollment Headcount We then investigated undergraduate minority student enrollment in the largest academic areas in agriculture. The five academic areas are 1) Animal Sciences 2) Agriculture Economics, Business, and Management, 3) General Agriculture, 4) Plant Sciences, and 5) Agricultural Public Services. Based on our analyses we found the following results for undergraduate enrollment from 2004 to student enrollment in the academic area of Animal Sciences increased by 3,074 students (129%). student enrollment in the academic area of Agriculture Economics, Business, and Management increased by 1,013 students (73%). student enrollment in the academic area of General Agriculture increased by 569 students (47%). student enrollment in the academic area of Plant Sciences increased by 413 students (59%). student enrollment in the academic area of Agricultural Public Services increased by 267 students (42%). 4 Student Yearly Growth Rate In addition to publishing newsletters, FAEIS presents posters at various academic conferences. Two posters have recently been produced: one for the Virginia Tech Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy (CHEP) on the very related topic of minority growth in Agriculture and Life Sciences Programs, and one for the Virginia Tech Deans Forum on Global Engagement (DFGE) on the topic of study abroad students in agriculture. Findings After investigating growth trends in four minority groups (African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and Caucasian) across five academic areas (Agricultural Economics, Animal Sciences, Apparel and Textiles, Food and Nutrition, and Human Development) from 49 Landgrant colleges and universities, we found that minority growth rates are increasing over four times faster than non-minority students (See Figure 5).
