2 Family Ties Program An integrated approach to serving substance abusing families in the child welfare system Funded by SAMHSA September
3 Family Ties Program Intensive wrap-around services for women and children involved with the Dept. of Children & Families (DC&F) and child welfare system who are receiving substance abuse treatment.
4 Family Ties Program Services provided include: Family Therapy Intensive Case Management Child Development Specialist Services Specialized Aftercare Services
5 Family Ties Program continued Intensive Parenting Education utilizing the science-based Nurturing Parenting Programs Psychiatric services provided by University of Florida Multi-disciplinary Staff Meetings
6 Family Ties Program Goal: To build protective factors in child welfare involved families while the family seeks treatment for substance abuse together.
7 Family Ties Program Gateway Community Services, Inc. provides the following enhanced services to our child welfare clients: Gender specific, culturally appropriate program specifically for women with children Family Intervention Specialist services Licensed Child Development Center on site Licensed Foster Care Parent on site Women and Trauma services Family Team meetings Dependency Drug Court Parenting education utilizing the Nurturing Parenting Programs Intensive Case Management Dual-Diagnosis treatment groups Housing Employment Services Detoxification, Assessment, & Substance Abuse Treatment
8 Family Ties Program Funded to serve at least 30 women and 50 children annually SAMHSA provides funding for residential bed days for the mothers and their children.
9 Family Ties Program Participants are referred to Family Intervention Specialists (FIS) located at DC&F by Child Protection Investigators (CPI) FIS completes a substance abuse assessment. If participant meets criteria for treatment, FIS will recommend client for the Family Ties Program.
10 Family Ties Program FIS and CPI work together to make arrangements for child(ren) to be placed with mother in treatment vs. foster care. Participant and child(ren) are oriented to substance abuse treatment program. Participant is then enrolled into the Family Ties Program and becomes eligible for Family Ties services.

Bavolek, Ph.D Initiated in the Fall of 1999 by the Florida Department of Children & Families to assess the effectiveness of parenting programs offered to high risk and abusive/neglecting families referred to parent education Secondary goal to compare the outcome data of parents attending the NPP to families attending non-nurturing Parenting Programs.
