4 Introduction This user guide provides procedures to gather Oracle Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) reports for analysis using Database Infrastructure Analysis Tool (DIET) by Hitachi Data Systems. The Oracle AWR reports are utilized by DIET to provide a comprehensive analysis of your company s Oracle database infrastructure requirements. By analyzing AWR reports for CPU and IOPS, DIET determines how much CPU workload and I/O traffic Oracle applications are generating and enables DBAs, System and Storage Admins to build out the optimal environment to achieve their performance requirements and prevent over or under provisioning. The document explains specific procedures to generate AWR reports to ensure that DIET gets the data in the required format for infrastructure analysis. The data collection is non-intrusive and places little overhead on the system. Intended Audience The primary audience of this document is the Database administrators (DBA) who will help generate the AWR Reports. After the DBA completes the procedure, the reports must be uploaded to DIET website for analysis. Which Reports should I generate: AWR vs Statspack Reports? DIET website supports AWR from Oracle 10g, 11g and 12c. DIET does not support Statspack reports. AWR provides significantly more performance metrics and statistics and is therefore the preferred report for DIET website. Please note that AWR requires the Oracle Diagnostics Pack license option. à Hitachi Data Systems recommends and supports AWR Reports from Oracle 10g, 11g and 12c. Snapshot Interval and Report Generation Period Snapshot Interval for AWR/Statspack Reports: Hitachi Data Systems recommend collecting AWR reports in a one-hour snapshot interval. Any report that is beyond the one-hour interval will reduce the accuracy due to averaging and thus effects analysis and recommendation. Report Generation Period: Generate AWR/Statspack reports over a 24 hour to 48-hour cycle of the peak workload days to get an accurate snapshot of your environments performance characteristics. How to generate Oracle AWR Reports Oracle introduced AWR performance analysis tool in Release 10g. Oracle AWR: Is installed automatically during creation of an Oracle database if you have the Oracle Diagnostics Pack. Creates snapshots each hour and retains database performance metrics and statistics. 3

5 Produces either text-based or HTML-based performance reports. Compared to Statspack, AWR gathers about 40% 60% more performance metrics and statistics at a lower level of granularity with more accuracy and with less impact during statistics gathering. AWR is the recommended performance analysis tool for Oracle 10g databases and later releases. Modifying AWR Snapshot Frequency and Retention Settings The easiest way to modify these settings is with the Oracle Enterprise Manager: Figure 1 Alternatively, Oracle 10g and 11g, 12c also provide the following procedure to change the frequency and retention of AWR snapshots: DBMS_WORKLOAD_REPOSITORY.MODIFY_SNAPSHOT_SETTINGS ( retention IN NUMBER DEFAULT NULL, interval IN NUMBER DEFAULT NULL, dbid IN NUMBER DEFAULT NULL); This example changes the interval setting to 30 minutes for the local database as SYSTEM or SYS: Note: For themost complete review for a system, it is best to have as many snapshots in the shortest period. If your snapshotsare over a long period, it will not be of value. EXECUTE DBMS_WORKLOAD_REPOSITORY.MODIFY_SNAPSHOT_SETTINGS(interval => 30); To verify that these changes were successful, after the procedure is executed, query the DBA_HIST_WR_CONTROL table. 4

6 Generating an AWR Report Using Oracle Enterprise Manager The simplest way to generate an AWR report is to use Oracle 10g, 11g, or 12c Enterprise Manager (EM). 1. From the Performance tab, under the Additional Monitoring Links section click the Snapshots link Figure 2 EM provides a list of possible AWR snapshots against which AWR reports can be generated. 2. Select the desired beginning snapshot ID radio button. 3. From the Actions drop-down list, select View Report and click Go. 5

7 Figure 3 To choose the ending snapshot ID: 1. Select the desired ending snapshot radio button and click Go. Enterprise Manager generates the report. 2. To save the report, click Save to File The AWR report is saved in an HTML format. 6

8 Figure 4 The finished report appears. Select the Save to File to automatically save the resulting AWR report in HTML format and upload it to the HDS DIET website for analysis. Figure 5 Generating an AWR Report Using SQL*Plus. You can generate an AWR report using SQL *Plus, The SQL script can be executed by a user account with SYSDBA or SYSOPER privileges. You will be prompted to provide the two snapshot IDs, the file name and format of the AWR report. Following is an example of executing the awrreport.sql script from SQL*Plus. 7

9 Note: Choose HTML Report Type, provide peak workload days and one-hour snap-id intervals and choose the default report name. Collect these reports for a 24 hour to 48-hour period. The larger the period the better it is for analysis. However, the snapshot interval has to be one hour.
