[Status: Presented] [Refereed] Description: This paper uses various data sources, descriptive statistics and time series analysis to investigate the gain (loss) in market share of an incumbent Major League Baseball team when a rival exits (enters) a local market. Descriptive results failed to show a dramatic increase (decrease) in attendance in the short run of an incumbent after exit (entry) for most of the cases considered but the time series regressions estimates suggest that the long run effects of entry and exit may be more substantial. Southern Economic Association Annual Meeting, Washington, District of Columbia. [Status: Presented] [Refereed] Description: We develop a model of daily baseball attendance based on utility maximizing behavior and then test it using Major League Baseball data from We find that home games are substitutes for each other and the substitution effects are strongest when home games are played closer in time. We also find that the substitution effects between single games and nearby doubleheaders are particularly strong and that the total effect of doubleheaders on season attendance is negative. This leads us to question whether the widespread use of doubleheaders from 1938 to 1985 was in the team owners' self-interest. Layson, S. K. & Rhodes, M. T. (2010, February). [Status: Presented] [Refereed] Description: Using daily Major League Baseball (MLB) data from , we find that the total effect of doubleheaders on season attendance is always negative. Regressions with annual data over an even longer span of time from also confirm this finding. This leads us to question whether the widespread use of doubleheaders prior to 1985 was in the team owners' self-interest. Our findings, however, that doubleheaders generally have positive effects on attendance on the days of doubleheaders but negative effects on attendance at both single games and doubleheaders surrounding doubleheaders, provides strong evidence that baseball fans are very responsive to incentives.
