Composition/Information on Ingredients Ingredients CAS# Wt. % Kraft Lignin Sulfur Common names: lignin sulfate and thiolignin. 1 Lignin is derived when pulping black liquor is precipitated and neutralized by acid washing. The product represented on this SDS is the result of this process. Lignin is a complex polymer that occurs in woody material of higher plants. It is resistant to typical chemical and enzymatic degradation that occurs in Kraft pulp mills. Lignin is composed of various intermolecular linkages between phenylpropanes and guaiacyl, syringyl, p-hydroxyphenyl, and biphenyl nuclei. Sulfur may also be present in varying concentrations. The product is normally in a high moisture state with a significant amount of water resulting in the range of percent lignin listed as depending on the content of water in different phases of the processing. Dried lignin is a combustible dust explosion hazard (see Section 5 below). Page 2 of 8 Rev. 05/29/2015

3 4. First Aid Measures Inhalation: Avoid inhalation of dust or mists. Kraft Lignin may cause unpleasant obstruction in the nasal passages, resulting in dryness of nose, dry cough and sneezing. Remove to fresh air. Seek medical attention if persistent irritation, severe coughing, or breathing difficulties occur. Eye Contact: Can cause irritation and reddening. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Immediately flush with running water for 15 minutes including under eyelids. Treat powder in eyes as a foreign object. Flush with water to remove solid particles. Seek medical help if irritation persists. Skin Contact: Kraft Lignin may cause mechanical irritation and/or sensitization. Flush contaminated skin with plenty of water. Wash with mild soap and water. Skin Absorption: Not known to be absorbed through the skin. Ingestion: Not likely to occur under normal use - may irritate mouth, throat and stomach if ingested. Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth out with water. Drink large amounts of water. If persistent irritation or symptoms occur seek medical help. Symptoms or Effects: Acute Symptoms/Effects Irritant to the respiratory system, eyes. Sensitizer to the skin. Delayed Symptoms/Effects Unique delayed effects are not anticipated after exposure. See Section 11 for additional information on chronic effects. 5. Fire-fighting Measures Extinguishing Media and Restrictions: Water and dry chemical. Specific Hazards, Anticipated Combustion Products: Thermal decomposition of Kraft Lignin produces irritating and toxic fumes and gases including acrid smoke, carbon oxides (CO, CO2), nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2 etc.), sulfur oxides (SO2, SO3 etc.), hydrogen sulfide, aldehydes and organic acids. Autoignition Temperature: Variable (typically C). Special Firefighting Equipment/Procedures: Beware of potential combustible dust explosion hazard if product is dried. Use caution to avoid dispersing dust. Use water to wet down dust to reduce the likelihood of ignition. Remove burned or wet dust to open area after fire is extinguished. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: As with other organic dusts, airborne clouds of Kraft lignin dust may ignite and burn with explosive force. Residual sulfur in material may form toxic sulfur compounds such as sulfur oxides and hydrogen sulfide. May produce combustible dust in air if product is dried and dispersed. The typical minimum explosible concentration (MEC) used for lignin dust is 50 g/m 3. Kraft Lignin explosibility classification (*Kst dry = bar m/s; *MIE dry = 3-10 mj) places lignin dust in the category of dusts which may potentially create a strong explosion under the right set of circumstances. According to guidance in the OSHA combustible dust publication OSHA lignin dust would be classified as a Class ST3 combustible dust (*Kst dry = >300 bar.m/s), potentially causing a very strong explosion. Caution should be taken in the processing, shipping, handling and use of these materials, particularly if they are in a dry state. Dry fine powder or residues should not be allowed to accumulate and dust should be kept away from sources of ignition. Use appropriate level of controls and housekeeping to avoid dust accumulations. The explosibility is decreased if the material is kept moist. Reference NFPA standards 654, 69 and the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook for guidance. *Kst the maximum rate of pressure rise is used to calculate the Kst value; an internationally recognized index used to classify dust explosibility. *MIE minimum ignition energy of the dust cloud. 4 6. Accidental Release Measures Steps to be taken in case Material Is Released or Spilled: Sweep or vacuum up for recovery and disposal. Avoid creating dusty conditions whenever feasible. Maintain good housekeeping to avoid accumulation of dried lignin dust on exposed surfaces. Use approved filtering facepiece respirator ( dust mask ) and goggles where ventilation is not possible and exposure limits may be exceeded or for additional worker comfort. Place recovered lignin dust in a container for proper disposal. 7. Handling and Storage Precautions to be taken in Handling and Storage: Dried lignin dust may pose a combustible dust hazard. Keep away from ignition sources. Avoid eye contact. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. Avoid prolonged or repeated breathing of dusts. Avoid contact with oxidizing agents, alkali and drying oils. Store in well-ventilated, cool, dry place away from open flame. 8. Ventilation to control dust should be considered where potential explosive concentrations and ignition sources are present. The design and operation of any exhaust system should consider the possibility of explosive concentrations of combustible lignin dust within the system. See SPECIAL section below. MECHANICAL (GENERAL) Assure that adequate exhaust or natural ventilation is provided to keep the airborne concentrations of lignin below exposure limits. SPECIAL Ensure that exhaust ventilation and material transport systems involved in handling this product contain explosion relief vents or suppression systems designed and operated in accordance with applicable standards if the operating conditions justify their use. OTHER ENGINEERING CONTROLS Personal Protective Equipment: RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Use filtering facepiece respirator ( dust mask ) tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US),CSA (Canada), CEN (EU), or JIS (Japan) where exposure limits may be exceeded or for additional worker comfort or symptom relief. Use respiratory protection in accordance with jurisdictional regulatory requirements similar to the OSHA respiratory protection standard 29CFR following a determination of risk from potential exposures. PROTECTIVE GLOVES Chemical resistant gloves such as nitrile are recommended. EYE PROTECTION Tight fitting chemical goggles are recommended. Natural decomposition of organic materials such as wood may produce toxic gases and an oxygen deficient atmosphere in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas. Toxicity Data: Irritant/Sensitizer: May cause irritation and sensitization by skin contact (R 43), according to the EC criteria for classification and labeling requirements for dangerous substances and preparations (Council Directive 67/548/EEC). Disposal Considerations Waste Disposal Method: Incineration in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations is preferred because emissions can be effectively controlled. Landfill disposal may be allowed in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations do not apply. It is, however, the user's responsibility to determine at the time of disposal whether your product meets RCRA criteria for hazardous waste.
