Maybe one sounds familiar. Complaint #1 The leader of the seder insists that we Rabbi Josh Berkenwald read every single word in the haggadah. No discussion or interruptions are tolerated. It takes forever, with only a sprig of parsley dipped in salt water to sate our appetites. Complaint #2 We race as quickly as possible through the haggadah to get to the meal, skipping most of it. Do either of these descriptions ring a bell? Both types of seder neglect a feature of Passover that is central to the holiday: curiosity. After the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, the Rabbis undertook the task of reformulating a Judaism that did not require sacrifices in a central location. Holidays could now be celebrated fully in the homes and communities where Jews lived, anywhere in the world. For Passover, the Rabbis transferred what had once been a symbolic meal of roast lamb that took place at the Temple in Jerusalem into the home-based seder. To this day, the seder is the single most celebrated Jewish ritual in the world. The Rabbis based the seder on the ancient Greek symposium (convivium in Roman society), a formal, multi-course meal that included extended discussions of philosophical questions. In today s seder, the questions are traditionally recited (sung, actually) by the youngest child at the table. We call them The Four Questions. Mah nishtanah ha-lailah hazeh mi-kol haleilot?... How is this night different from all other nights? But is this how the Rabbis imagined it would happen? Read this record of how it was supposed to happen: They mixed a second cup and here the child asks the parent. And if the child lacks the intelligence to ask, the parent instructs: How different (mah nishtanah) this night is from all other nights! (Mishnah Pesachim 10:4, 2nd century) Who says what to whom? The child is supposed to ask a question, but it is supposed to be a genuine, honest inquiry. It is not supposed to be a rote recitation of formulaic words. If the child is not able to come up with anything to ask, then the parent is supposed to encourage questions by pointing out unusual things taking place. The parent beings by stating Mah nishtanah! Look how different this night is from all other nights! There is no question mark at the end of that sentence. It is an exclamation point. The parent continues, pointing out some of the unusual features of the evening. On all other nights we eat leavened (chametz) and unleavened bread (matzah), but on this night we only eat matzah. For the Rabbis, the leader of the seder was not limited to mah nishtanah to spark curiosity. Playfulness was encouraged. The Talmud tells the following story: Young Abbaye, who would later become one of the greatest Sages in Jewish history, had just sat down to the seder with his uncle, Rabbah, the head of the Academy. Rabbah secretly signalled the servants, who swooped into the room and cleared the tables away before anyone could take a bite. When Abbaye saw what was happening, he cried out: We still haven t eaten, why are they tak- The Voice of Sinai 2

3 ing the table away? Rabbah smiled and said to his nephew, You have exempted us from having to say Mah Nishtanah. What a great example of pedagogy. Rabbah, the great teacher, knew how to keep his students guessing. He knew that he had to mix things up to keep them interested and engaged. Rabbah s creativity provoked Abbaye s question. This is one of the reasons that Passover has remained the most popular Jewish holiday for the past two thousand years. At some point in the last two thousand years, the speaking parts were switched. What was originally imagined as a spontaneous inquiry by the child was replaced by the parent s prompt. In addition to encouraging the children to recite Mah Nishtanah, we must be creative to draw out further questions. During Passover this year, let s find ways to mix things up. Don t read from the beginning to the end of the haggadah without pausing for questions or discussion, and don t skip over everything to rush to the meal. Surprise each other. Spark one another s curiosity. That is how we make this night different from all other nights. Chag Pesach Sameach. Have a Happy Passover. 4 Religious School Sinai Religious School is getting ready for Passover. Each grade has specific learning objectives for Passover. Kitah Gan - Our kindergarten class focuses on how holidays are observed at home. They will make their own Seder plates and learn about the symbolic meaning of each item. Kitah Gan will also learn songs outlining the parts of the Seder. Kitah Alef - Our first-grade students will learn the story of Moshe and the Exodus from Egypt. They will also learn the ten plagues in Hebrew and create their own ten plagues props for our school Seder. Kitah Bet - Our second-grade students will learn to sing the four questions and will discuss how we ask questions during the Passover Seder in order to make sure the story of the Exodus from Egypt is told. Kitah Gimel - Our third-grade class focuses on blessings associated with the holiday. They will learn the blessings for each of the six items on the Seder plate. Kitah Dalet - Our fourth-grade students learn about Jewish traditions for Passover from around the world. They will also lead Dayenu at the Seder and incorporate some of crosscultural traditions. Kitah Hay - Our fifth grade-class will learn about the four sons mentioned in the Pesach Seder. They will create a skit about these sons and recite the Yom Tov Kiddush. Kitah Vav - Our sixth-grade class will focus on how to keep kosher for Pesach. They will study how to kasher a kitchen for Pesach and the different foods that are kosher/not kosher for Pesach. They will also learn a song from Hallel to sing at our school Seder. Kitah Zayin - Our seventh grade learns about a hot topic associated with each holiday. They will look at the theme of freedom and slavery around the world. Is there a Jewish responsibility to end world slavery? All of our Passover curriculum will culminate in each grade leading a different part of the school-wide Seder on April 6th. Katherine Mueller Education Director RS students on Purim! 5 Nursery School What a busy month it s been here at Sinai Nursery School! The most exciting news of all is that we now have SO MANY MORE KIDS! We welcome all the new families to Sinai Nursery School s warmhearted circle. Due to the increase in the number of children, we have decided to open a fourth classroom, dividing Kalaneet into two groups: the Older two-year-olds and the Younger two-year-olds. This way, we ll be better able to accommodate their needs. New students mean new teachers: we welcome Michal Sfrai and Sharon Koenigstein to our teaching staff. We have already seen how wonderful they are with the kids! They bring a lot of valuable experience - and LOVE! - to our school. Dr. Novak came to give speech evaluations to the kids in order to learn more about their development. This is especially important as they enter Kindergarten. We want to make sure we are able to help them any way we can - our kids have a lot to say! The teachers had a Staff Development Day at the JCC, where we caught up on innovations in early childhood education. Speaker Todd Wanerman gave an informative talk on how art impacts a child s ability to learn. A singing group, the Shirettes, was there to get everyone singing and dancing. Speaking of dancing, our Dancing with Karina class continues to be a huge hit with everyone! Karina s infectious enthusiasm gets all the kids dancing (fun!) and all the teachers moving. The next Dance Class will be on Monday, May 12th from 4:00 to 4:45. We celebrated the Winter Olympics in Sochi by making the Olympic flag as well as flags of many countries. Then there was the beautiful collage of athletes, one of whom is from right here in San Jose! (It s on display in the hall outside the school.) The kids made and wore their silver (well, OK: tin foil) medals, and ran many races. Everyone was a winner! There was lots of fun to be had celebrating Purim! There was an awesome parade with colorful costumes. We painted cardboard boxes to create Purim monsters to scare Haman away. We made groggers, of course, and scrumptious hamentaschen made the holiday delicious. Looking forward to a fun-filled spring. Warm wishes, Ifat Kantorovich Preschoolers on Purim! 9 Maot Chittim Fund for Passover The Hagaddah says, All who are hungry: come and eat. All who are needy: come and join the Passover celebration. School and office closed for Passover Nursery School will be closed during Passover, April 14 through April 22. Nursery School will resume on Wednesday, April 23. We fulfill the mitzvah of Ma ot Chittim to ensure that every Jew in the community has enough to eat during Passover. This year, Rabbi Berkenwald will pool all financial contributions for Ma ot Chittim to make a collective Sinai gift to JFS Project NOAH and to Mazon: a Jewish Response to Hunger. Please donate generously! Authorization to Sell Chametz Nisan 5774 April 2014 There will be no Religious School on April 15 and April 22. The Congregation Sinai office will be closed for Passover on April 15, April 16, April 21 and April 22. The Torah prohibits the ownership of chametz (leavened grain) during Pesach (Passover). If possible, all chametz food not acceptable during Pesach, or materials containing such unacceptable food should be destroyed or given away before the holiday begins. Should this be impossible, the chametz may be stored in such a way that one is sure to not use it during the holiday. Its actual ownership is transferred to a non-jew until the holiday ends. The transfer, mekhirat hametz, is accomplished by appointing an agent, usually the rabbi, to handle the sale. It is a valid and legal transfer of ownership. At the end of the holiday, the agent arranges for the reversion of ownership of the now-permitted chametz. If ownership of the chametz was not transferred before the holiday, the use of this chametz is prohibited after the holiday as well. It is appropriate to make a gift of tzedakah when appointing an agent for the sale of chametz. Please complete and return this form no later than 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 14, I, the undersigned, do hereby make and appoint Rabbi Joshua Berkenwald my true and lawful representative to act in my behalf to sell all chametz possessed by me knowingly or unknowingly as defined by Torah and rabbinic law, and to lease all places wherein chametz owned may be found upon terms and conditions as discretion dictates. This transaction will be in effect for the duration of Pesach, which this year begins with sundown of April 14, 2014 and runs through April 22, And to this I hereby affix my signature on this day of in the year Signature Print Name Address Phone Number Please submit this form promptly to: Congregation Sinai 1532 Willowbrae Avenue San Jose, CA The Voice of Sinai 9

With Holocaust survivors for parents and few other 'real' relatives alive, relationships operated under a "Law of Compression, in which tenuous connections turned friends into uncles, cousins and grandparents. Life was framed by Grandpa Lolek, the parsimonious and eccentric old rogue who put his tea bags through Selektion, and Grandpa Yosef, the neighborhood saint, who knew everything about everything, but refused to talk of his own past. Amir and Effi also collected information about what happened Over There. This was more difficult than collecting relatives; nobody would tell them any details because they weren't yet Old Enough. The intrepid pair won't let this stop them, and their quest for knowledge results in adventures both funny and alarming, as they try to unearth their neighbors' stories. As Amir grows up, his obsession with understanding the Holocaust remains with him, and finally Old Enough to know, the unforgettable cast of characters that populate his world open their hearts, souls, and pasts to him! The book can be purchased online at sites such as Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com and others. Several copies are also available for loan from the synagogue. 21 Community and Connectivity Adult Education at the Jewish Community Center - and one middle school program Looking for Jewish education for adults? Here s what s coming up at the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center of Silicon Valley. For more classes, visit One Man, Two Wives: Inside the Household of our Forefathers. Thursday, April 24th from 7:00-8:30pm. Beresheet (Genesis) tells us that two of our three forefathers had more than one wife or concubine at the same time. Abraham faced the tension between Sarah and Hagar, and Jacob married sisters, Rachel and Leah. Discuss the resulting challenges and drama, by examining both the relevant biblical texts as well as rabbinic and modern commentaries. $8 JCC members, $10 non-members. Register at The Power of a Girl (grades 6-8). Sunday, May 4th from 1:00-4:00pm. Middle-school girls are invited to this girl empowerment event organized by girls their own age (Yavneh Day School s 8th grade class has organized this JCC event). Make new friends and learn about the power within yourself. Enjoy carnival style booths, exciting group activities, interesting discussion topics, and snacks and drinks. Admission to this event is FREE. The Addison-Penzak JCC is located at Oka Road, Los Gatos. For more information, contact the JCC s Center for Jewish Life and Learning at (408) or visit the website at FILM SCREENING AND DISCUSSION MAKING LIGHT IN TEREZIN SATURDAY, APRIL 19TH, 7:00 PM Tickets: $7 general admission, $5 JCC members If you have ever been touched, or had your life changed, by a song, film, book or performance, you understand the transformative power of the arts. In Making Light in Terezin, a new film and book, Richard Krevolin reveals the true story of how, in WWII s darkest days, prizoners in the Terezin ghetto near Prague maintained their humanity, made light, and found a mechanism for survival through theater, song, dance and laughter. Mr. Krevolin will join us for a discussion after the film. JEWISHLIFE APJCCCENTERFOR ANDLEARNING Oka Road, Los Gatos, CA CJLL@svjcc.org The Voice of Sinai 21
