The Online Application The application is located on the Smarter Select website. You can access the online application at 2016 ISF Grant Application or through a link on the ISF website on the grants page. Click on the Apply button and create an account.
Application Section by Section Grant Classification Titles should be descriptive, concise, and memorable. Example: Make Shakespeare Come Alive! and Libraries on the Go Be specific regarding number of students as judges use this information to calculate cost per student, although a high cost per student does not preclude consideration, but may be considered along with other criteria. Project Description Provide a brief description that is clear and concise. Define methodology and the strategic areas being addressed. Define the goals of the project, the need being met, and the twist that makes your idea better than current practice. Explain how this project will integrate into the school s curriculum. Briefly tell us how this project will enhance your students curriculum. Describe the equipment and materials needed for this project. Remember that the judges are not teachers, however do reference Common Core and other requirements as appropriate. Consider including only the top 2-3 references.
Application Section by Section Project Description Describe the lifespan of the project. One year funding is usually for events like field trips or speakers. Most curriculum, hard goods, and professional development have a lifespan of More than one year. ISF will consider funding for projects that extend over several years, buy you must apply each year and continued funding is not guaranteed. After 3 years you must take a hiatus for a year before reapplying. Project Description Is the project dependent on one individual? ISF would like your assurance that the materials, once purchased, will be used as proposed. If more than one individual is able to facilitate this grant, ISF can feel comfortable that the project will continue. If the Grant Writer leaves or is reassigned, and cannot use these materials, it is the responsibility of the awardees to inform ISF of the contingency plan for the grant.
Application Section by Section STUDENT BENEFIT Describe how student will be affected by and benefit, directly and indirectly, from this project and how it will enhance the education process. PROJECT EVALUATION Explain what measures you will use to evaluate your students to determine the impact of the project. Concrete outcomes are more valuable than anecdotal outcomes, but both may be valid. Map your evaluation measures to your timeline so that ISF will know when to contact you for feedback through out your project. TECHNOLOGY If hardware/software is involved, has confirmation been obtained that it is compatible with district guidelines and can be supported by district tech personnel? Be sure to tell us your experience with this technology. Have you used it personally, seen it in action, read about it? *All technology requests need approval from the district prior to submitting your application.
Application Section by Section BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET Attach a budget spreadsheet to your application. Remember to include sales tax and shipping charges. Combine similar items, for technology include the manufacturer and model number, curriculum should be specific with each title listed separately. We encourage you to add photos or links that will allow the judges to view items you plan to purchase. This will give them an added understanding of your project. If you are presenting a Kateri Brow grant in the final judging we encourage you to bring the items that you are requesting so the judges can see them in use. List the entire budget for your project on your spread sheet. Be sure to include all items, shipping, and tax. Also, deduct any funding you have committed from another source. The total at the bottom of your budget should match the amount you are requesting. Be as specific as possible. Too much information is always better than too little.
BUDGET EXAMPLE Item Qty. Cost Subtotal Ship Tax Total Book (list by title) Book (list by title) TI-Nspire CX (model #) NA Teaching Guide Project Total Less PTSA grant ( ) Grant Total Requested
Application Section by Section BUDGET Can the project proceed with partial funding from ISF? If yes, what is the minimum useful funding amount? Explain your plan for a scaled down version of the proposal, or why scaling back is not an option. Determine if you can scale back the project and still achieve the same results. Can you get by with fewer materials or by using a smaller sampling of students? ISF tries to fund many projects fully, but there is a limited amount available. If you would rather scale back your request than have it bypassed, please include the minimum useful amount that could be used to pilot your project, and explain why a full rollout has added benefit. TIMELINE List the steps, in timeline format, with dates from start-up through completion. Please include when feedback, thank you notes, and evaluations will be available to ISF. Judges respond favorably to a well thought out timeline. Thank you notes and project evaluations are not an optional part of the process, so be sure to include them and leave time in your schedule to complete them.
Application Section by Section COMMUNITY AWARENESS ISF donors provide the funds that pass to you in the form of grants. The more aware community members are of the way ISF impacts schools, the more they are willing to support ISF-and grants. Please describe how you will communicate the value of your grant to the larger community, both inside and outside your school. Think outside the box! Besides mentioning ISF at curriculum night, what creative ideas do you have for promoting the Foundation and your grant? Consider inviting ISF donors to come and see your grant in action just let us know a few weeks ahead of time and we will do the rest.
RECIPIENT COMMITMENT EVALUATION THANK YOU NOTES FOLLOW-UP You need to submit an evaluation at the end of your grant cycle. If your grant is funded you will receive a link to this evaluation form. You will complete your evaluation on line. You will need to facilitate thank you notes from your students to our ISF donors. We will provide you with note cards when you receive notification that your grant has been funded. If you have physical items that are purchased with grant funds, they should be identified with ISF stickers. Stickers can be obtained from the ISF office, just let us know how many you need. Please let ISF know when opportunities arise for board members or donors to see your grant in action!
The Grant Review Process Kateri Brow Kateri Brow Grants have 2 levels of review and are judged by a panel of ISF Board Trustees. In the initial phase, All applications are evaluated individually by the judges according to the rubric and narrowed to the top scorers. If an application passes the initial review, the applicant will be asked to present their proposal to the judges during an evening at the ISD Administration Building. Following the presentations, judges rescore the grants and choose which grants will be receive grants and the level to which they will be funded. Classroom Enrichment Classroom Enrichment Grants have only 1 level of review and are judged according to the rubric by a panel of ISF donors from across the district. Applications are evaluated by the entire panel in a blind judging. Judges discuss the applications as a panel and then independently score each grant. The top scoring applications receive funding.
The Judging Rubric STUDENT BENEFITS 40 Points EVALUATION & RECOGNITION 20 Points QUALITY 10 Points Judges Overall Impression 10 Points Innovation/Compelling Engaging for Students Impactful and Enduring Sustainable & Tied to Curriculum Outcomes & Evaluations ISF Recognition Conventions, Clarity, Completeness Accuracy
Grant Writing Best Practices BEST PRACTICES BEST PRACTICES Begin with the end in mind What are you wanting to accomplish and how will you measure success? Judges have many applications to review, so be concise and compelling. Your passion should be evident and you should convey that passion with your word choice. Review the judging rubric before you begin your application the rubric will be posted on the ISF website. Try not to use too many acronyms not everyone will understand what you mean. BEST PRACTICES ISF uses a blind judging format that requires you to keep the body of your application free of clues as to your school please keep an eye out for accidental mention as to your location or student population. If you are unsure of what is required, please reach out to us at grants@isfdn.org we are here to help.
Frequently Asked Questions FAQ FAQ FAQ Q: Can I apply for more than one grant at a time? A: While you may submit as many grant applications as you have ideas, ISF will award no more than two grants per applicant. Q: What if my program extends over multiple years? A: You may apply for funding for 3 years for the same grant, but then you must take a one year hiatus. Be advised that multiple year funding is never a guarantee! Q: If I am awarded a grant, when will I receive funding? A: The District is given the funds for distribution in March (CE grants) and May (KB grants), for use the following year. Recipients may choose to purchase supplies immediately, or wait until the school year begins. You will access your funds through your building bookkeeper. Any funds not used by May 1, 2017 will be returned to ISF general funds unless an exception has been approved by the foundation.
Frequently Asked Questions FAQ FAQ FAQ Q: Are there any types of requests ISF will not fund? A: ISF does not fund any grant the ISD Cabinet does not deem appropriate and aligned with current district goals and curriculum. Judges look carefully at requests for technology and the extent to which they can be supported by District tech personnel. Requests for technology need to be closely tied to student learning. Q: Can I ask ISF to pay time for professional development or program implementation? A: Yes. However, when preparing your budget for teaching time, ISF uses the curriculum rate not the per diem rate. Please include the cost of benefits in the personnel cost on your budget. Q: Should I apply for a grant for my National Board Certification? A: No, Board Certification is already and ISF program. Q: How many grants will ISF fund this year? A: The number varies from year to year based on the quality and dollar amounts of application received. This years total grants budget is $100,000.
THANK YOU for your time!
