This series of courses will develop your skills in the three key elements of grant seeking: Financial skills Proposal writing Building relationships with funders We ll aim to equip you to become a confident and a fully rounded fundraiser, who can master approaches to all types of grant maker You can attend all three courses as a complete package or each one individually. 2 a one day training event on 9 February 2009 financial skills for fundraisers Aims To enable participants to interpret the financial information of a funder. Explain how using financial information can improve one s approaches to funders. Equip participants to present their budget proposals in a format that is ideal for funders. Equip participants to understand the accounts of their own charity and to explain key financial issues. As a result of attending this course, participants will be able to: identify key financial documents published by a funder interpret a Statement of Financial Activities, a Balance Sheet and their related documents describe the key issues within their own charity s accounts present a project budget in a format that complies with good accounting practice. This course is suitable for Fundraisers who need to research a wide range of trusts and other grant-makers and who need to represent financial information as part of funding applications. John Cammack A qualified accountant, manager and teacher who has worked as Head of International Finance at Oxfam GB ( ) and senior lecturer at Oxford Brookes University ( ). John now works as a freelance consultant with a range of UK and international charities. 3 a one day training event on 10 February 2009 the art of applications Aims Joseph Pulitzer captured the essence of persuasive writing: Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light. Bill Bruty has been in fundraising for over 20 years. He has been a Fundrasing and Marketing Director in two national charities (BTCV and Children s Aid Direct) and has successfully raised money from every type of donor. He is recognised as one of the UK s leading fundraising trainers. the art of applications advanced 150 This course will look at how to implement these ideas. Conveying the appropriate mood within an application is as important as the content, therefore this event aims to help people tailor their writing style for different donors. We will look at how to master the balance between emotional and rational arguments in proposals. As a result of this course you will be able to: Use the Pulitzer Checklist in order to produce well balanced applications adapt your writing style in order to present the same information to very different donors convey appropriate moods and emotions within complex application forms Registration and coffee The Pulitzer Checklist Coffee Conveying the appropriate mood in proposals Balancing emotion and reason in informal proposals Tea Incorporating mood into complex proposals Course review and evaluation
