1 COMPARTMENT REVIEW RECORD OF CHANGES AND DECISIONS Michigan Department of Natural Resources Atlanta Management Unit 2015 Year-of-Entry Atlanta Field Office October 31, 2013 The following documents the changes and decisions made at the compartment review to the Inventory database, reports, and compartment maps presented at open house for the Atlanta Forest Management Unit compartment review. This document is the official record of changes and decisions. Proposals originally presented were approved unless noted below. Comments from Stakeholders Compartment 1 (Stand examiner Darrick Coy) Stand 37 Change management objective (MO) to aspen, remove the comments regarding short wood and protecting oak regeneration. Stand 45 Change MO to mixed deciduous with conifer; delete comment to leave one to two oak per acre; focus retention around oak and pathway. Stand 46 Require snow-off harvest, whole tree skidding, to encourage natural regeneration. Change MO to natural jack pine. Stand 61 Change MO to planted red pine. Delete comment regarding leaving all oak and red pine. Stand 66 Change to final harvest. Encourage scarification with sales specifications, remove comment to protect oak regeneration, keep trail specifications. Focus retention along the trails. Stands 94 and 115 Final harvest, follow retention guidelines, focusing it around ORV trail and use it for visual management concerns. Monitor
2 regeneration early, replant to red pine in areas that do not meet minimum stocking levels for oak. Stands 126 and 128 Final harvest, follow retention guidelines, focusing it around ORV trail and use it for visual management concerns along private land. Change management objective to mixed upland deciduous. Stand 127 Remove prescription. Stand 131 Remove prescription. Change Site conditions to soft factor (5C) in the oak areas. Compartment 4 (Stand examiner Richard Barber) Stands 75, 77 and 63 treatments that are currently being harvested; activity tracking needs to occur when Timber Sale Completion Report is complete. Stand 79 Focus retention around pockets of large crowned oaks. Compartment 10 (Stand Examiner Chad Fate) Stands 5, 56, 63 and 72 Change from thinning to selection and add regeneration gaps to the prescription. Stand 72 Leave heavier density around the gate, block bypassing routes with stumps, berms, boulders. Stands 5, 24, 28, 50, 56, 63, 72, and 76 Add regeneration check to the next steps. Stand 50 Add comment to next steps to retain oak as a component of the regenerating stand, define areas to skip trenching and planting. Adjust harvest to uncut pockets, next step trench and plant. Create trench and plant treatment to cover non-harvest areas. Stand 56 Change prescription to selection harvest with regeneration gaps. Stand 58 Delete comment regarding protecting the regeneration, delete do not remove more than 1/3 basal area, add comment to say thin to Stand 20 Clear-cut with reserves, focus retention along snowmobile trail, add trail protection specifications, and leave 2-3 dominant oaks per acre where oaks are present. Stand 37 Cut 68 acres south of motorcycle trail. Add trail protection specifications, follow retention guidelines focus along trail where possible. Leave 2-3 oaks per acre, in clumps, where oaks are present. Stands 68 and 84- Add area retention to the sale specifications. Add locked Opportunities Field Survey (OFS) comments for archeological concerns, and stand comment to see locked OFS.
3 Add specific motorcycle trail specifications to Stands 5, 9, 37, 50, 63, and 68. Compartment 32 (Stand examiner Richard Barber) Stand 77 Change prescription to clear cut due to ash and beech salvage operations - would not leave enough to maintain quality hardwood. Leave buffers around hemlock. Proposed start date 2014 YOE. Focus retention along the High Country Pathway, but harvest ash and beech within the retention pockets. Stand 45 Add comment to capture oak in retention, remove comment regarding leaving all oak. Stand 28 Drop the prescription. Stand 13 Add 56 acres of final harvest, removing 15 acres of spruce, balsam fir and white pine in pockets. Stand 19 Prescription for the final harvest, follow retention. Stands 51 and 59 Remove prescription. Stand 70 Harvest all ash and beech (Salvage Harvest), proposed start date to 2014 YOE. Stand 15 Drop prescription; refine site conditions (too steep). Stand 21 Prescribe for final harvest, focus retention around concentrated oak areas, adjust site conditions (too steep) to the ravines on the east edge of the stand. Compartment 40 (Stand examiner Darrick Coy) Stand 11 Change cover type from low density trees to Upland Mixed Forest. Change acceptable regeneration from Low to Med/High. Stand 20 Remove specification regarding leaving all red and white pine. Stand 24 Remove comment to leave red pine, white pine, and oak. Delete comment regarding low stocking from the next steps field. Stand 31 Remove comment to leave red pine, white pine and trees greater than 26 Diameter at Breast Height (DBH). Add comment to leave areas heavier to oak as retention. Stand 38 Change to final harvest, leave 2-5 red/white pine per acre and trees over 26 DBH. Stand 58 Change Management Objective to natural jack pine. Next step is to monitor regeneration; plant if natural fails to meet minimum stocking level. Adjust boundary to harvest buffer. Delete leave tree retention comment. Cut during snow off conditions, require whole tree skidding. Stand 96 Add trail protection specifications. Stand 74 Remove the comment to cut all jack pine. Stand 88 Delete comment regarding leaving all red pine, white pine, oak and aspen for snags. Add comment to focus retention around oak.
4 Stand 89 Change Management Objective from planted to natural jack pine, delete the Leave all oak comment. Add comment to cut during snow off conditions, whole tree skid, chip tops. Next steps: Check regeneration early; if natural regeneration fails, trench and plant to jack pine. Compartment 54 (Stand examiner Richard Barber) Adjust proposed start dates on ongoing sales. Stand 14 Remove the prescription. Compartment 58 (Stand examiner Richard Barber) Stand 62 Add specification to protect shrubs in the prescription. Stand 73 Add rabbit habitat specifications to the prescription specifications. Stand 75 Remove rutting specification comment from prescription, use standard rutting specification in sale proposal. Stand 55 Exclude portion of the stand west of the road to prevent aspen from expanding into Stand 62 (jack pine). Compartment 61 (Stand examiner Chad Fate) Stand 69 Add prescription for final harvest with reserves, follow retention and add trail protection specifications. Update the compartment narrative to include archeological concerns and add locked OFS comment regarding those concerns. Stand 42 - Code appropriate hard factors precluding active management. Compartment 91 (Stand examiner Jeff Autenrieth) Stand 45 Advance proposed start date to October 1, 2013 to facilitate ash and beech salvage harvest. Stand 46 Drop the prescription. Stands 21, 26 and 31 Prescribe the remainder of these stands with the same prescription in the portions that are outside the Devil s Lake Management Plan. Code with a site condition of 1D. Compartment 100 (Stand examiner Chad Fate)
5 Stand 29 Retention will be identified in the uncut portion of the stand (3-10%). Remove Special Conservation Area from southern half of the compartment that was coded as SC8 last entry, as it does not meet the Type 1 or 2 old-growth definitions. Compartment 110 (Stand examiner Darrick Coy) All treatments Add specification to not haul on weekends unless permission is granted by Unit Manager. Compartment 115 (Stand examiner Chad Fate) No changes made at compartment review. Compartment 125 (Stand examiner Jeff Autenrieth) Stands 12, 23 and 95 Remove prescriptions. Stand 8 Move proposed start date to match treatments to the west (October 1, 2013) Stands 56 and 59 Add recreation trail specifications. Reshape the treatment boundary for Stand 34 around the campground and also modify the boundary of the Special Conservation Area for the concentrated recreation area. Contact local park manager to discuss hazard tree removal in West Tomahawk State Forest Campground. Compartment 146 (Stand examiner Jeff Autenrieth) Stands 37 and 38 Add hard factor 2H. Compartment 149 (Stand examiner Darrick Coy) Stands 1 and 5 Prescribe the rest of the stand for final harvest, copying existing treatment specifications in Stand 1, follow retention guidelines. Stand 33 Prescribe for final harvest, 2 inch specification, focus retention pocket south of two-track in the southwest corner of the stand and pocket north of intermittent creek. Reshape boundary to harvest the north tip of Stand 41. Next step to trench and plant, herbicide if necessary. Compartment 153 (Stand examiner Richard Barber)
