COMMUNICATION STUDIES PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS Areas of Focus The curriculum is designed to facilitate student mastery of theory and research, to enhance communication skills, and to enhance student preparation for a variety of careers or for graduate study. The communication major is not designed as a training program in advertising, journalism, production, or public relations. By design, the courses in the curriculum tend to cluster into several different areas of study. These areas represent important foci in the communication discipline and are areas in which the Department s faculty possess special expertise. Students may specialize in one of these areas or may design individual programs of study by choosing other combinations of electives that best meet their needs and career objectives and tailor their academic experience. There are six areas of study in the Communication major interpersonal/family, emerging technologies and digital media, health communication, organizational communication, mass communication, and intercultural communication. INTERPERSONAL/FAMILY COMMUNICATION This area of study will help you understand communication processes within complex, dynamic relationships and improve your friendship, marriage, family and other meaningful long- and short-term interpersonal relationships. Social, Community, and Human Services (e.g., Victim services, Case manager, Community organizer, Counselor, Clergy/Pastoral care, Family support worker, Activity/Services director, Administrator, Advocate, Event coordinator, Program administration, Grant writer, Development officer, Researcher, Youth development worker, Crisis hotline worker) Education (e.g., Health educator, Parent educator, Certified family life educator, Advocate, Policy analyst, After-school program director, Curriculum developer, Family resource coordinator, Academic advising or counseling) Business (e.g., Administrator, Event Coordinator, Manager, Human resource specialist, Employee assistance specialist, Consumer protection specialist, Sales and marketing, Real estate agent, Consultant, Market researcher)
2 EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND DIGITAL MEDIA This area of study will help you understand communication interactions mediated by digital media and communication processes surrounding the implementation of emerging technologies in various communication contexts such as organizational, interpersonal, health, political, instructional, intercultural, etc., for contemporary and savvy communicators ALL areas (social media managers, project managers for virtual projects, usability specialists, multimedia marketing, web publishing, e-zine writers/editors, game design, website design and development, new media researchers) HEALTH COMMUNICATION Health communication is the study and practice of communicating promotional health information, such as in public health campaigns, health education, and between doctor and patient. The purpose of disseminating health information is to influence personal health choices by improving health literacy. At Chapman, this can lead to the Master s program in Health and Strategic Communication by adding one more year of coursework. Health/Medical/Pharmaceutical (Director of communication, Clinic public relations, Health promotion campaign developer, Health communication analyst, Medical training, Research analyst, Hospice manager, Drug prevention and treatment specialist, Healthcare counselor, motivational interviewer, Activities director, Marketing director, Fundraising, Human resources) Education (school healthcare administrator, healthcare educator and trainer, medical grants writer, health promotion and prevention campaign coordinator, research analyst) ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION This area of study will help you develop an understanding of the organizational dynamics, communicate effectively with others given a specific organizational role (e.g., leadership, management), and promote organizational visions through designed messages (e.g., mission statement). Instructional / Training Context Corporate trainer, instructional designer. Persuasion Context Sales (Real Estate, Car, Pharmaceutical, Business-to-Business, Banking, Insurance), Recruiter, Fundraiser, Communication Campaign Director, Social Media Specialist / Manager,
3 MASS COMMUNICATION This area of study will help you understand communication processes associated with the transmission of information from few to many, and the associated effects of these media messages on the individual. Social, Community, and Human Services (e.g., Social media administrator, social media advocate, media events coordinator, social media development officer, social media campaign manager, lobbyist) Education (e.g., Mass media health educator, media literacy specialist, mass media educator, professor) Business (e.g., Media manager, sales and marketing, media consultant, media market researcher, public relations, marketing & entertainment industry relations, external communications and program director, sports marketing consultant, media sales representative) Media (e.g., Copy editor, advertising executive, news broadcaster, director of media operations, product marketing specialist, corporate communications coordinator, journalism, Federal Communications Commissions [FCC] officer, publicity consultant, entertainment celebrity management, disc jockey) INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION INTERCULTURAL/GLOBAL COMMUNICATION This area of study will help you understand the structure and dynamics of non-mediated and mediated communication in a variety of interracial, interethnic, interfaith, international and global contexts and help enhance your competence both as a global citizen and in the global workplace.
