1 CPY Professional Seminar in Family and Relationship Therapy Summer Semester 2013 Class meeting Tuesdays 4:00 to 6:30 pm on May 16th, 23rd, 30th 1 credit Instructor: Alicia M. Homrich, Ph.D. Office hours by appointment only Office: 237 Cornell Hall Phone: ahomrich@rollins.edu Course Description: This seminar investigates the implications of professional issues unique to marital, couple, and family counseling/therapy including ethical and legal considerations; professional organizations, preparation standards, and credentialing bodies pertaining to the practice of marital, couple, and family counseling/therapy (e. g., the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy); the role of marital, couple, and family counselors/therapists in a variety of practice settings and in relation to other helping professionals; and research and technology applications in marital, couple, and family counseling/therapy. The professional identity of the family and relationship therapist is discussed. (One semester credit) Prerequisite: CPY 550 Course Structure: The instructional format of this course will include lectures, discussion, and experiential learning. Be sure to complete the assigned reading before each class; otherwise, you may have difficulty taking effective notes and fully grasping the concepts presented in lectures. Guest lectures, panels, and videotapes will further supplement class presentations. You are encouraged to ask questions and add your own experiences and perspectives to the class dialogue. This course is credit/no credit. Course Goals/Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, each student will be able to: 1. Articulate the mission of family and relationship therapy as well as the professional associations for this career field. 2. Describe the differences between the profession of family and relationship therapy and other mental health counseling professions. 3. List the contributions of and career opportunities available in family and relationship therapy in various clinical practice settings. 4. Identify issues unique to the functioning of families and relationships that are optimally addressed by a systemic approach to therapy. 5. Understand the requirements of licensure as a marriage and family therapist in Florida. 6. Apply the AAMFT code of ethics to the unique aspects and issues involved in counseling families and couples. 7. Be able to articulate her or his personal interest in and reason for pursuing a specialization in the career of family and relationship therapy. 8. Apply the systemic approach to working with client relationships that are diverse and unique in structure. 1

2 Assignments and Learning Experiences Grading Rubric for CPY 559 CPY 559 is graded as a Credit/No Credit course. Students must obtain 90% of the points to receive Credit for this course. This assignment is an online scavenger hunt to enhance student understanding about the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and other professional organizations of relevance to family and relationship therapists. The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with the primary professional organization that has been vital to the identity, establishment, and advancement of the profession of family and relationship therapy as well as related organizations important to Instructions for the online scavenger hunt can be found on BlackBoard. The completed assignment is a paper responding to the numbered questions in the assignment (please use the questions as the titles in the body of the paper). The paper should be formatted according to APA style. Please submit the essay electronically via Blackboard titling the document: 559-Professional-LastName 2. Professional Association Membership and Participation Certificate program students must become a member of the Central Florida Association of Marriage and Family Therapy AND either the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy OR the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors (a division of ACA). CFAMFT: Must Join CFAMFT and AAMFT: either AAMFT (*preferred) IAMFC: or IAMFC You must also attend as many CFAMFT monthly meetings as possible this summer and in the coming year. 3. What is your reaction? Each student will view the videos listed below. Students will watch each video in its entirety and react to each video in the assignment link that accompanies the video link on BlackBoard by responding with a few sentences responding directly into the BlackBoard space provided to the following questions: (a) What did you learn? (b) How do you plan to utilize the information in your clinical work with families and couples? (Please do not give a recount of the video content.) Video/Author 1. What would you do? The purpose of this assignment is to provide the opportunity for students to understand dilemmas that are common in working therapeutically with couples and families. These situations require a systemic perspective and knowledge of the ethical codes, legal implications, and best practice approaches reflected in the current literature in family and relationship counseling. Every student team will be assigned a Case Dilemma in family and relationship therapy for which they will serve as the Investigation Team. A Wiki for each case dilemma will be set up on BlackBoard for the investigators to share the results of their investigation on the topic, including: resource information, comments, and discussion about the case dilemma. The focus should be on facts vs. opinion for this initial posting. Dilemmas should be addressed from multiple perspectives including: a) Listing the issues or controversies identified in the case dilemma from the perspective of a family and relationship professional encountering the case. I.e., what are the issues? b) Identifying the applicable AAMFT ethical codes (citing the specific ethical codes that apply to the case). c) Identifying legal issues (according to Florida statute) that may apply to the case. d) Citing content from professional journal articles that provides perspectives and practice management strategies on the topic (be sure to include the citation with the specific content relative to the case). e) Sharing content from other professional sources (such as the AAMFT website or family therapy newsletters) that offer suggested methods for addressing the dilemma. f) Lastly, describing what a therapist would need to know and/or do if entangled in the described dilemma when working with a family or couple. Investigator research must be posted 48 hours before the 2nd class meeting. Investigator should come to class prepared to make a presentation about their case. Every student who is not an investigator for a case is expected to participate as a member of a Peer Consultation Group by viewing each Wiki and participating in a professional conversation about each case dilemma. Part of this discussion will occur in class, so come to the second and third classes prepared by having read the postings. DEFINITION: A peer consultation group is a collegial forum that assists the case therapist as well as each other in expanding professional knowledge, ethical awareness, and developing an approach to a case dilemma. These discussions are of gray areas of professional practice are considered by the professional community to be a best practice strategy that is consistent with legal and ethical mandates of the profession. Peer consultation is an ongoing, interactive process of discussion examining the topic in a meaningful and helpful way. Peer consultation occurs when a group of colleagues engage in interaction that includes: a) Commenting on the information posted. b) Thoroughly examining all aspects of the issues from personal, professional, ethical, moral, and legal perspectives. c) Contributing alternative views or approaches to the case dilemma. d) Contributing additional resources that offer alternative or additional perspectives to the topic. 3

4 e) Challenging the suggested resolutions and/or thinking of others to broaden and deepen the collective collegial perspective on the topic. f) Providing feedback. g) Sharing suggestions for clinical practice strategies to manage the dilemma. h) Responding to any questions posted. Multiple contributions of comment and conversation by each peer in the consultation should be posted by the day before the 3rd class meeting. Why Family and Relationship Therapy? Each student will write a 500-word essay articulating the reasons they chose to pursue training in the field of family and relationship therapy. CFAMFT awards a $ scholarship annually to a deserving student currently enrolled in a local counseling program specializing in marriage and family therapy. Once feedback is received from the professor and revisions are made by the student, the CPY 559 essays will be submitted for consideration in the Central Florida Association for Marriage and Family Therapy s Annual Scholarship Award competition The CFAMFT Board chooses the best essay in the fall and the scholarship is awarded to the contest winner at the Holiday Breakfast, which is held on the first Thursday of December. Please submit the essay electronically via Blackboard titling the document: 559-Essay-LastName 6. Class attendance and participation Participation is a crucial part of the learning experience of this class since each class will include practice and other opportunities to better understand the profession of family and relationship therapy. Absences cannot be made up. If you miss one class you will be withdrawn from the course. 4

5 Course Policies and Procedures Confidentiality In order to provide safety for all individuals in the class and to protect the confidentiality of practice clients and panel members, students will refrain from discussing all information shared outside of class. Instructor Availability If, at anytime, you wish to discuss any issue related to the class with me, particularly those related to your performance in this class, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am very willing to set up an appointment with you at a time outside my posted office hours. Please do not wait until it is too late to help make this course a successful and rewarding learning experience for you. Your suggestions and ideas are always welcome, both during class and outside of class. Attendance Policy Attendance is required of all students registered and will be monitored. If it is impossible to attend class, notify me as soon as you know you will miss class. If more than one hour of class time is missed, you will have to withdraw from the course according to the policies of the Hamilton Holt School. Class will start on time and time agreements for class breaks will be honored. Tardiness on the part of one person disrupts the flow of learning for fellow students. Please be prepared to begin and/or resume class as agreed. Paper Formatting All papers are required to be presented in the formatting style detailed in the American Psychological Association. Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Points will be deducted from the grade if this style format is not followed. To avoid penalty, please assume an abstract, a reference page, and correctly formatted citations are required! Method of Evaluation and Grading CPY 559 is a pass/fail grading system. Incomplete Policy Students who are unable to complete course requirements within the time limitations of the semester are responsible for initiating and working out an arrangement with the professor prior to the end of the term in order to receive an incomplete. An agreed upon plan for completion must be submitted in writing identifying a date when work will be completed. If the incomplete is not resolved by the end of the following term, the grade will turn into an NC= No Credit Respect for Individual Differences The Department of Graduate Studies in Counseling endorses a learning climate, which represents diversity and individual differences and encourages the open-minded exploration of differences among individuals. We do not expect all graduates of our program to think the same way, but we do expect that while they are students they will be accepting of differences and strive to understand how other peoples perspectives, behaviors, and world views are different from their own.
