1 Educational Leadership Program Professional Principal Department of School Specialties University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Educational Leadership Program Mission Statement: The Educational Leadership (EDLR) Program is designed to produce change-oriented campus and central office leaders who involve all stakeholders in building high performance learning communities based on best teaching and learning research. Routes to Professional Principal Certificate: Route 1 A thirty-six semester credit hour Masters of Education is offered. Students may then earn the Professional Principal Certificate through completion of an additional six semester credit hours. Application for entry to UTB s graduate school is required for entry into the EDLR program. Route 2 Students who already posses a Masters in Education will complete an application for admission to the EDLR program and request the development of a deficiency plan. The deficiency plan incorporates courses leading to Professional Principal Certification. Please contact the Program Coordinator for information in regards to deficiency plans. michelle.abrego@utb.edu Admission Steps for the EDLR Program All students MUST apply for admission to the Educational Leadership Program (EDLR). a. Please set up an appointment with an advisor. When making an appointment, the standard procedure for contacting your advisor should be via . Students are assigned an advisor depending on their month of birth. You may contact Jackie Trujillo, department secretary, at (956) or jackie.trujillo@utb.edu for information on advisors. b. Complete an application** for admission to the Educational Leadership Program (EDLR) (forms are available in the Department of School Specialties Office). c. Submission of three Professional Recommendations. The applicant is responsible for distributing the Recommendation Forms to the individuals who have knowledge of the Applicant s personal attributes, competence in present position, a potential for graduate study and leadership potential. **NOTE to Student**: What constitutes a COMPLETED application? An application is considered complete when all of the following items have been completed and submitted by the student and received by the university program. 1. Student has completed the application form. 2. Three recommendation forms have been received by the EDLR program. 3. A deficiency plan or program of study has been submitted to the appropriate advisor. 4. The signed information sheet (located at the end of the packet) has been completed and signed.

7 Deficiency Plan Leading to Texas Principal Certification for Students with a Master s Degree in an Education Related Field Certification seeking students who complete the required coursework in sequence as specified below in Block One, Two and Three and who also meet state certification requirements, will be eligible for Texas Principal Certification. Students who complete the required coursework but do not meet certification requirements will take up additional six semester credit hours of coursework as outlined in Block Four.
