1 World Literature Online Welcome English 2331 World Literature A Study of the Literature of the World and its reflection of the Human Condition. Welcome to English World Literature. This course will cover literature from the earliest times up through the 20th Century. We will study poetry, drama, fiction and prose. The reading selections are designed to offer the opportunity to build knowledge of how literature developed around the world and how that literature reflects the human condition. Once the knowledge and understanding is gained we will then address the various issues and ideas in our own written responses. Each Unit lists the objectives and expected outcomes. A variety of instructional methods is incorporated to deliver lesson material. Videos, audio, web links and written explanations will be used to supplement the readings. After each lesson is presented, the student will have activities designed to enhance understanding of the assigned reading. Discussion board quizzes will follow the readings for each Unit. Peer responses will be required with each discussion assignment. Each unit will contain an open forum that is not graded. This open forum will serve as a place for students to share ideas and ask questions. Except for the works originally written in English, the works are presented here in an English translation. When possible, I've offered the piece in it's original language as well. Keep in mind that translated works do not always keep the original format; translator's strive to study the language so as to keep the content and meaning consistent with the original. It is also important to note that understanding the concepts in the literature necessitates a working knowledge of the historical period and events relative to each piece. Familiarity with each author and his or her circumstances will also enhance understanding of the writing. Do not limit yourself to the information that is provided with each lesson. Reach farther, bring to class new and enlightening information. As you read the selections, you should take notes and look up words and concepts with which you are not familiar. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to complete these readings. Stop and think about what is happening. Write down your thoughts and questions.

2 Texas State Technical College Harlingen ENGLISH 2331 World Literature Syllabus COURSE DESCRIPTION --ENGL A survey of world literature from the ancient world to the present. Students will study works of prose, poetry, drama, and fiction in relation to their historical and cultural contexts. Texts will be selected from a diverse group of authors and traditions. COURSE PREREQUISITES: A grade of "C" or higher in English Instructor: N. Moodle will be the preferred venue for online communication. Please be sure to identify yourself in all communication. When you leave a phone message, always repeat your number slowly and clearly. Good communication is vital to an online class. We will work together to make it as success. MAJOR COURSE REQUIREMENTS: A. Proofread written documents. B. Accommodate cultural diversities in written communication. C. Participate in group situations. D. Perform research.

3 E. Document research sources. F. Read analytically. G. Analyze literature in various genres. H. Critique various literary genres. Each of the 6 main units are composed of reading assignments, discussion forums, question and answer forums and source/research gathering assignments. Each reading assignment is accompanied by a lesson of supplementary materials that is designed to help the student better understand the material. In addition there are 3 major essay assignments. The final exam will also be an essay exam. IV. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Goals and Outcomes will be included in each unit. 1. Identify key ideas, representative authors and works, significant historical or cultural events, and characteristic perspectives or attitudes expressed in the literature of different periods or regions. 2. Analyze literary works as expressions of individual or communal values within the social, political, cultural, or religious contexts of different literary periods. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the development of characteristic forms or styles of expression during different historical periods or in different regions. 4. Articulate the aesthetic principles that guide the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities. 5. Write research-based critical papers about the assigned readings in clear and grammatically correct prose, using various critical approaches to literature. A discussion forum containing questions, research projects or some other activity will follow each reading. Each discussion forum will also include a peer response assignment. 7 Other Course Requirements COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES Your active participation in the class is expected. After a prewriting assignment designed to stimulate your thinking about a topic, you will be asked to present your best insights to the full class for further discussion. Some writing responses will be available for the entire class to view. This will help you each to improve and become more comfortable with the expressing your ideas. GRADING POLICY: Grading Criteria Essays 45% Quizzes 40% Final Essay Exam 15% Grading Scale A--Excellent B--Good C--Average D--Passing 0-59 F--Failing The lowest possible passing grade for this course is a 60. ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Discussion Quizzes will help you to explore different ways to produce your ideas on paper. You will have the opportunity to view others' ideas and respond to them. Your papers must be typed, double-spaced, and formatted according to MLA guidelines. All other tests and assignments will be posted in Moodle Assignments:

8 Participation/Discussion and Group Work: Shorter writing samples will reinforce the concepts we will cover in this course. These assignments will be in response to a variety of writing prompts; The discussions are designed to allow you to engage with the readings, and connect with the class community. Papers : Your essays are designed to measure your comprehension of the readings assigned. Final Exam: The final examination will be a word analytical essay that will measure your ability to take a topic, choose sources, develop a well thought out idea and thesis, communicate all of those in a well structured essay that reflects good usage of the English language. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Writing never occurs in a vacuum but within the context of audience, and the immediate audience for writing in this course is ourselves. The course requires a commitment to the community, and you can't participate in a community of writers unless you are here. Attendance in class is required which translates into logging into the course at least three times per week.
