Catalog Description: This course will discuss the origins of project management and its importance to improving the success of IT projects. Basic topics including scope, cost, and time management will be covered. Students will work in groups to plan large scale project management. Students will also learn about software tools that aid in project management. Grading: Grade Metrics and Relative Weights: 1. Student Individual/Group Presentation(s) and Assignment(s) 20% 2. Quizzes 20% 3. Mid-Term 20% 4. Comprehensive Final 30% 5. Attendance 10% Notes: Late work will be penalized. Any assignments submitted late will immediately decrease in maximum value by 10%. With every 24 hours that pass after the original due date and time the assignment will continue to lose an additional 10% in maximum weight. That means that after 5 days the assignment will have a maximum value of 50%. After 10 days the assignment has a value of 0%. Attendance is vital in this course. If you know you will miss a class, before the class is held, then you need to let me know else that absence

3 will be unexcused. If there is an absence that you could not prepare for then you must report to me as soon as possible or that absence will be unexcused. Any lack of attendance not including the two events previously mentioned will be marked as unexcused. Being late for a class will also be penalized, but at a lesser rate than missing the entire class session. Quizzes and exams are not to be made up unless they meet similar conditions that are stated below for an incomplete course grade. The following grading scale will be applied to each students accumulated course metric values. 100% - 92% A 91% - 90% A 89% - 88% B+ 87% - 82% B 81% - 80% B 79% - 78% C+ 77% - 72% C 71% - 70% C 69% - 68% D+ 67% - 62% D 61% - 60% D 59% - 0% F Course Learning Objectives: Students will be assigned into groups (teams) and then will be involved as participants in the exercise of managing well-defined and well scripted team projects. The manager for these projects will be the professor. Over the term the student teams will work within various project development strategies. Some of those project methodologies, processes, and frameworks are listed below. As the descriptions tend to be much more complicated, their names are simply listed: Agile Six Sigma Scrum XP (Extreme Programming) Crystal FDD (Feature Driven Development) DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development) Adaptive Software Development RUP (Rational Unified Process) PRINCE2

4 There be will group and individual presentations regarding the individual assignments for the team members (students) dependent on the schema chosen. Students will become well versed in the duties of team members for many popular project management methods. Understand the incorporation of technical project management and its importance to improve the success of information technology projects. Become aware of project management terms and techniques such as: The triple constraint of project management The project management knowledge areas and process groups The project life cycle Tools and techniques of project management such as: o Project selection methods o Work breakdown structures o Network diagrams, critical path analysis, and critical chain scheduling o Cost estimates o Earned value management o Motivation theory and team building o Other current topics Be introduced to management concepts by working on an individual project(s). o Experiment with combinations of current software development tools to help plan and manage a small (well defined) project o Become familiar with good project management assessment o Explore examples of good and bad project management o See other samples of project management beyond just the technology related samples Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Be able to describe the philosophy of project management and its importance to improving the success of information technology projects

Demonstrate knowledge and use correctly, project management terms and techniques such as: The triple constraint of project management The project management knowledge areas and process groups Describe various project life cycle strategies and associated benefits Define when to implement tools and techniques of project management such as: Which Project Methodology is most beneficial for particular situation Work breakdown structures Importance of Network diagrams, critical path analysis, and critical chain scheduling When and how to use Cost estimates ROI assessment How to enhance team motivation and team building Other current topics 3. To define an appropriate project management solution for a particular project(s). 4. Use a combination of other software development tools to help plan and manage a small project 5. Appreciate the importance of good project management Share examples of good and bad project management Use knowledge and skills developed in this class and adapt to other settings 6. Students will be able to:

6 collaborate in a group environment choose from a variety of project strategies the appropriate management methodology for their project be able to objectively evaluate peers/group members Students will collaborate to develop a particular project (virtual) from conception to completion ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty refers to cheating: a serious ethical issue. You are encouraged to work cooperatively with other students in the class. However, each student is expected to do his or her own assignments. Written work that appears to be copies of each other will not be given credit. Helping or being helped by, another student or the appearance of helping, or being helped by, another student during a quiz or an exam will be considered academic dishonesty. This will be grounds for a zero on the quiz or the exam. NOTES: It is the policy of the Computer Science department that you must receive a passing grade on the final exam (60% or higher) in order to pass the class. A student who is participating in an official college activity for example, a member of an athletic team or a member of a performing arts organization may have an exception made to a deadline with a signed, written request from the sponsoring organization before the deadline. For example, a student on an athletic team who will miss a Friday quiz because of a game may make up the quiz provided he or she submits a written request, signed by a coach, before the original quiz is given. It is the student s responsibility to obtain the written request. Student work that has not been returned will be kept for one quarter. An incomplete grade will be given only in unusual circumstances. You must be passing the class at the time of the

7 request for an incomplete, and there must be a serious event that prevents you from completing the class.
