1 Overview This unit is about performing stocktaking operations for the control of metal products. This involves ensuring 1. you carry out comparisons of actual stock with documented information 2. you identify suitable customers for in-stock materials 3. you maintain contact with the commercial department to ensure maximisation of stock usage You may find this unit a suitable choice if you are working in metal processing situations dealing with metal stock control and customer orders. This unit contains two elements 1. control and evaluate stock 2. transfer stock National Standards of Performance have been set for each element. These describe the competence that you must demonstrate to meet the expectations of employment. They provide targets for learning and development and for the assessment of your competence. In addition, a specification has been produced of the knowledge and understanding that you would need to be able to perform to the national standards. This specification has been produced at unit level, but is also referred to within those elements to which each aspect is most relevant. Evidence Requirements have been set for the achievement of these standards in the context of a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ). Details of these requirements and examples of evidence that might be suitable are given in relation to each element. Where the Evidence Requirement asks for evidence against a number of items from a list, only that number of items need be addressed. There is no need to gather additional evidence in relation to all items on the list for a candidate to be assessed as competent. Assessment Principles arising naturally from work activities are the expected methods of gathering performance evidence. In general, and certainly in relation to routine events and occurrences, it is a requirement that performance evidence be gained from normal work activities undertaken in commercially active production environments. Evidence from activities and locations away from the workplace should not be considered to be relevant or acceptable, except in relation to rare or dangerous occurrences such as those associated with the following: 1. health, safety and environment issues SEMMPA39 1

2 2. emergency scenarios 3. rare occurrences at work In these cases the use of high quality, realistic simulation that imposes pressures, which are consistent with the workplace practices, may be used. The use of simulations in relation to routine events and occurrences is not generally acceptable and would need to be justified. Questioning by oral or written means must be undertaken against the knowledge and understanding specifications given. Where a component of knowledge and understanding occurs across more than one element, there is no need to assess it independently in relation to each element. The use of questioning to probe candidate competence in relation to rare or dangerous occurrences should be undertaken only when the use of realistic simulations to address the same competence cannot practically be applied. In all cases, simulation accompanied by oral questioning should be preferred to questioning alone. SEMMPA39 2

3 Performance criteria Control and evaluate stock You must be able to: P1 P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 keep records of physical stock that are complete and accurate ensure documented information is complete, accurate and up-to-date compare actual stock results with documented information investigate discrepancies between physical stock and documented information and take the appropriate action identify recommendations for improvement and communicate them to the appropriate people accurately record all relevant information in a suitable format and make it available to the appropriate people at the required time Transfer stock You must be able to: P7 correctly and accurately register incoming stock P8 compare stock to outstanding customer balances and the forward order book to find suitable outlets P9 notify the commercial department of stock still unallocated so they may resell it P10 correctly identify reallocated stock to meet customer specification P11 specify the correct stock to meet customer orders P12 correctly and accurately record outgoing stock SEMMPA39 3
