1 ATHLETIC TRAINING for Club, Recreational and Intramural sports
2 Introduction The purpose of this manual is to provide club, and intramural (IM) sports participants information that will allow them to take a proactive part in their sport safety and receive health care specific to their athletic injuries. This manual includes guidelines as to how athletic training services will be rendered and the daily operation of the athletic training room. It is expected that all club, and intramural students read, understand and follow the rules and procedures of this manual. This is in addition to any other handbook(s) associated with each of those sports entities, and the rules/policies outlined in those associated handbook(s) are supported by the Athletic Trainer. 4 Appointments Appointments can be made through the patient portal found online at: or at the front desk of urgent/primary care located on both first and second floor of The Well, at request to see Athletic Trainer. When student arrives for appointment make sure to check in on the kiosk or with the front desk staff. If late to appointment or no show, $20 fee may be applied. Accessing the Athletic Training Room The Athletic Training Room is located 1 st floor, RM 1031A, in The Well. Hours will be determined, and posted on the Athletic Training Room door as well as online. Injury Reporting Participants are responsible for reporting injuries and scheduling an appointment with the Athletic Trainer. Participants may also contact the Student Health and Counseling Services, or other injury management resources. If participant wishes to see their Primary Care Physician or receive care outside of Sacramento State University, he/she must submit medical documents as proof of care and clearance to the Athletic Trainer (and the Sports Clubs Advisor) for injuries sustained in Sacramento states represented sports activity that deem necessary a physician clearance. For injuries that may occur at away contest, the participant/coach/safety officer must report the incident within 48 hours of the occurrence of an injury. The Sports Club advisor and Athletic Trainer should be contacted as early as possible by phone or in the event of a serious injury or illness. Insurance Insurance is not needed to see the Athletic Trainer. However, if your injury warrants referral of care it will be necessary to provide proof of insurance. Participants are responsible for assuming all financial obligations incurred for treatment of any injury or illness that may be sustained as a result of participation in club, and intramural sports for Sacramento State University. Sacramento State University provides no insurance coverage for participants; therefore, he/she must to have accident/medical insurance that is equal to or greater than that offered through Student Health Insurance Plan. 5 *Sports club members may be eligible for secondary insurance through Club Sports if an injury is sustained during participation while the student is representing Sacramento State University in club sports and an injury report is completed. The student will be held responsible for all medical bills acquired within the referral of care. Athletic Training Eligibility Only club, and intramural student athletes that are Sacramento State University students (undergraduate or graduate) are eligible to see the Athletic Trainer. Other club participants, such as faculty, staff, alumni and community members, are not eligible to see the athletic trainer. Students may also be referred to the Athletic Trainer by one of the SHCS providers. Teams must submit a list of names that are on their competitive roster for this year. These athletes should be in regular attendance at practice and compete consistently in home and/or away competitions for your team. Athletes must be on the team competitive roster and fully registered and approved to see the Athletic Trainer. If you have new additions to the competitive roster, you must inform the Athletic Trainer as soon as possible so they are on the eligible list. Athletes 17 or younger will need to get a minor consent form from the Athletic Trainer ahead of time to obtain parent signature prior to meeting with Athletic Trainer ( services/minor_consent_for_med_counseling_services.pdf) The Athletic Trainer is available for assessing sport club related musculoskeletal injuries and recommending/implementing corrective exercise programs. Providing advice or suggestions regarding injury prevention. Taping or wrapping of current injuries, as long as there is a current treatment plan that is being followed. The Athletic Trainer may refer athletes to the Student Health Center or other medical facilities for further evaluation, lab tests, or other services. No fees will be billed to club student athletes or the athletes insurance to see the Athletic Trainer in the Athletic Training Room as those services are provided by Student Health and Counseling Services. Athletic Training for club and IM sports is only available through the Student Health and Counseling services Athletic Trainer. Club and IM athletes are not eligible for services through the Athletic Trainers for varsity sports. ATC Manual Page 5 of 7
6 Athletic Trainer Event Coverage Your team may request the Athletic Trainer for event coverage for practices and/or competitive events if ATC is available. Event coverage must be requested three weeks or earlier in advance to the Athletic Trainer. Requests do not guarantee coverage. Health and Safety Officer(s) Duties Club Sports Health and Safety Officers are students that are on the Sports Club Team who act as a liaison between team members and Athletic Trainer regarding health and safety issues concerning certain individuals. HSO s will report injuries that occur during practices or events that an Athletic Trainer is not present, on the injury report form found on the SO&L club sports webpage and recreation clubs/sport Clubs/assets/Injury%20Report.pdf The injury reports will be made available to the Athletic Trainer, as needed. The HSO IS NOT responsible for the treatment schedule of the injured athlete, and/or responsible for any medical decisions regarding return to play. In the event of a suspected head injury, the HSO is required to notify the student that s/he cannot return to play, until further evaluation by a physician or the Athletic Trainer. The Well Staff IM Sports It is a requirement that official documentation is completed when an injury is reported that occurs during IM play. This documentation must be completed by a Well staff, and may be available to the Athletic Trainer, if needed. The Well staff will follow up with reported injury, and it is the responsibility of the student to seek out evaluation and/or treatment from the Athletic Trainer. The Well staff is not responsible for the any medical decisions regarding return to play. In the event of a suspected head injury, the Well staff are required to notify the student that s/he cannot return to play, until further evaluation by a physician or the Athletic Trainer and have the right to not allow the student to continue playing.
