4 City Information The City The historic city of Cambridge is a university town in the county of Cambridgeshire, England. It lies in East Anglia about 50 miles (80 km) north of London. Cambridge is at the heart of the hightechnology center known as Silicon Fen a play on Silicon Valley and the fens surrounding the city. Cambridge has been described as the loveliest city in Britain. The magnificent courtyards, the bridges, the River Cam and, above all, the variety of architectural styles are all part of the city s splendour. Life in Cambridge revolves around its famous university which has been consistently ranked one of the top ten universities in the world. The beautiful college buildings and their gardens, students on bicycles, punts on the river and huge book shops create a unique and enchanting atmosphere. It continues to be the largest free Science Festival in the UK and attracts a wide audience of all ages from the local area and beyond, including many international visitors, to its lectures and engaging demonstrations of science in action. Strawberry Fair : A major free musical festival in June, with bands on many stages, beer tents, circus performers, scores of speciality food stalls and a market. Cambridge Midsummer Fair: The Cambridge Midsummer Fair has been held on Midsummer Common since the early 13th century. Starting with a Mayor's Procession, the fair features the usual rides, a comedy marquee and live music as well as a number of market stalls. August there is a day of music Cambridge Folk Festival: Held every July in the grounds of Cherry Hinton Hall, the Cambridge Folk Festival is one of the most famous in the world. Listen to the best traditional UK folk to North American country, blues, roots and jazz on three stages. Shakespeare Festival: This festival is dedicated to all things Shakespeare. Taking place every summer, it celebrates the Bard's brilliance with performances of some of his most famous works. Dragon Boat Festival: Dragon-boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition, where large teams of rowers compete on vessels each with its own drummers - a fun, friendly event in September. 5 How to find us Directions to the Cambridge Centre Embassy is located just a short distance (15 minutes walk) from the city centre. Students living in our residences will receive a map with directions on how to get to school upon arrival. Students living with an Embassy homestay will either be brought to school on their first day, or shown how to get to school using public transport. Transfer to your accommodation Individual students arriving on their own can be met by a taxi driver on request, we would not recommend taking a black cab from the airport as this often proves to be more expensive than pre-booking. 7 Facilities Embassy Cambridge is a great place to learn located in a beautiful, tree-lined residential street in the west of the city and occupies a modernised and extended Edwardian house. It is close to the river and the University and only a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute cycle ride from the city centre. There is plenty of space on site for you to relax and spend time with other students, including a garden, covered courtyard seating, social areas, computer room, library and a large cafeteria serving international cuisine, including Halal and vegetarian options. Classes do not normally commence until day two. Timetables Students may find that they are joining a class which already exists. This is perfectly normal and is because students arrive on different dates and stay for different lengths of time. The important thing is that each week is a separate teaching unit and students will be placed in the class which is most appropriate for their level of English. Teachers will help integrate new students into the group.
