Our focus on growing industries and regional development includes a range of diverse interests associated with research, policy development, biosecurity and integrated solutions in agriculture, forestry, wine, seafood, and food. PIRSA is also responsible for the continued development of our regional areas and harnessing opportunities from regional industries that support resilient communities. PIRSA comprises of approximately 1100 people working in locations across metropolitan and rural South Australia. Within the framework of South Australia s Strategic Plan (SASP), the agency maintains a key focus on economic development, increasing economic value from the primary industry sector in support of the SASP target to grow the contribution made by the South Australian food industry to $20 billion by Critical to the agency achieving the goals of SASP is its ability to provide leadership and expertise, and to develop constructive partnerships with industry, other levels of government, and the wider community. The knowledge, skills and experience of its people are integral to achieving PIRSA s goals. Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) is a dynamic Government of South Australia agency committed to the economic development of the State and the sustainable use of the State s food, fibre and minerals industries. Biosecurity SA is a division of PIRSA that aims to protect the economy, environment, communities and human health from the negative impacts associated with the entry, establishment or spread of invertebrate and vertebrate pests, animal, plant and aquatic diseases, weeds, contaminants and food borne pathogens. Biosecurity SA has responsibilities for policy, planning, surveillance, preparedness, response and ongoing control programs in the areas of animal health, aquatic animal health, marine pests, vertebrate pests, weeds, social amenity pests, plant health, and food borne pathogens (from primary industries) and contaminants. NRM Biosecurity is a unit with Biosecurity SA, focused primarily on the management of weeds and vertebrate pests declared under the Natural Resources Management Act NRM Biosecurity works closely with NRM Boards, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and equivalent interstate agencies to achieve coordinated, strategic responses to new incursions and management of existing priority pest species. NRM Biosecurity provides policy and technical advice and support to regulatory activities, collaborates in research on pest control techniques, fosters surveillance and early intervention systems and supports pest awareness and education activities, all of which contribute to achieving Goal 4 of the State NRM Plan. 2 2 The Weed Management Coordinator s (WMC) primary responsibility is to coordinate and manage the implementation of national programs for Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) in accord with strategic plans adopted for these species, and in support of the Australian Weeds Strategy. Secondly, the WMC facilitates and coordinates projects on the management of WoNS threatening South Australia (SA) and other weeds of state significance. The WMC also contributes to SA and national weed communication initiatives. The WMC facilitates and coordinates collaborative multi-jurisdictional activities, training and education including supporting organisers and/or presenters of weed identification workshops, providing information on best practice methodology and access to scientific support, and collecting and collating mapping data. The WMC s activities will contribute to improved community and industry knowledge and weed management practices, provide linkages between stakeholders in all jurisdictions and provide integration of state and local projects on WoNS species. This will be achieved through support for the relevant national weed committees, provision of technical advice and educational and extension materials, and information sharing among key stakeholders. National responsibilities focus on implementation of national strategies for WoNS species at national, state/territory and regional levels as prioritised by the relevant national committees. This requires interstate travel and liaison with various government agencies, community groups and industries across Australia to develop and implement surveillance, eradication, containment and management projects. Statewide responsibilities focus on advancing strategic management of weeds of joint national and state significance, based on priority actions in national and state weed and NRM plans. This requires intrastate travel to liaise with government, industry and community stakeholders, plus interstate travel to meetings of national WoNS committees. The primary focus is on facilitating and coordinating regional projects in SA to contain and eradicate outlier populations of WoNS, working with NRM Boards. REPORTING/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS To whom the person reports; staff for whom the person is responsible; and internal and external working relationships. The Weed Management Coordinator reports to the Principal Biosecurity Officer Weeds, NRM Biosecurity. Works with members of the NRM Biosecurity Unit on weed management issues. Works closely with the chair and other members of relevant weeds committees. Consults and advises relevant regional weed working groups across Australia. Works closely with Australian Government weeds sections (in SEWPaC and DAFF), interstate WoNS National Coordinators and the National Weeds Management Facilitator. Networks with other government agencies in SA (e.g. DENR, NRMBs) on weed management. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS e.g. OHS&W, Act/Award, location, travel requirements, frequent overtime, etc. The Weed Management Coordinator is currently located at the Waite Campus, Urrbrae, but may be relocated anywhere in South Australia. Some out of hours work may be required. Considerable amounts of intrastate travel and some interstate travel. A current driver s licence is essential. The incumbent will be required to maintain a safe working environment by adopting appropriate hazard management practices consistent with the role. *The incumbent will be expected to uphold the ethical behaviour and professional integrity standards as contained in the Public Sector Act, The incumbent will be required to contribute to whole-of-agency working groups developing PIRSA policy responses to significant and emerging issues as required. SECTION B: RESULTS TO BE ACHIEVED The outcomes, outputs, services, tasks and products arising from the duties. Result area

3 3 Duties expected in this role include: Strategy coordination: Nationally coordinated implementation of strategic plans for WoNS species, enabling a reduction in the density and extent of these weeds and a subsequent recovery in biodiversity and/or production values. Relationships and networks: Facilitation of new, on-ground projects in NRM regions across Australia under threat from WoNS species and for NRM regions in SA under threat from WoNS, including providing assistance to prepare proposals, strategies and work plans. Taskforce support: Executive Officer support for relevant WoNS national management committees, including organising national meetings, recruiting members, providing relevant documentation, ensuring information flow to/from the committees in relation to regional, state and national issues and guiding the group in overseeing the implementation of the National Strategy. Training, communication and extension services: Collate and interpret technical and scientific information and coordinate extension support services and training that assist in improving community and industry behaviour and the adoption of best practice management. Ensure governments, communities and industries in SA have increased awareness about the identification, impacts and management of weeds. Monitoring, evaluation and reporting: Monitor, evaluate and report on the implementation of the relevant national weed strategic plans and ensure that processes and actions remain relevant and responsive to State and Australian Government goals and stakeholder objectives. Collate mapping data collected by relevant agencies and groups, including the presence and density of weed infestations and activities to address them. Assist in the preparation of performance and financial reports as required for relevant funding agencies. Provision of advice: Technical, legislative, planning and resourcing barriers to improved management of WoNS species addressed at regional, state and national scales. Collaboration: Collaborate with the National Weeds Management Facilitator and natural resource managers to ensure efficient and effective management in reducing the impacts of weeds. Participate in the WoNS coordinators group, including attendance at meetings and assistance with joint displays and presentations. Represent SA s interests on national committees for relevant WoNS. Organisational: Contribute to achievement of Biosecurity SA and PIRSA objectives.
