1 Goal-directed Instructional Design Plan Provide At Risk Online High School Students Skills to be Successful in the Workforce or College Through Increased Collaboration and Coursework Author Sandra Toth 1. A problem or a need there must be a problem of practice or an educational need that should be addressed during the lesson. The educational need for the online high school I teach at is a way to provide at risk students the skills, encouragement, and support they need to stay in school. The goal that will be addressed during this lesson will be in my Career & College course to provide online students a plan to become successful in the workforce or entering college. Students will learn the consequences of dropping out of high school. I plan to meet this goal by increasing the collaborative environment in my online classroom and combining it with the students effort in their coursework. By increasing collaboration, shared interests, and building a sense of community support, students will be more motivated to stay in school. 2. A real-world performance how the learning objective fit into a real-world activity or need. Students need to know the benefits of academic achievement and how they relate to a successful and productive life. If they do not stay in high school their chances of living a life of poverty or crime greatly increases. Students must learn the social and economic costs of not finishing high school. 3. An instructional objective the objectives are based on the final outcome, activity or test. These objectives will each be different for the four types of knowledge: performing skills, recalling facts, identifying examples of concepts, and applying principles. a. Performing skills- Research college, vocational training, and career choices to decide what direction to take/study the statistics and facts compiled about high school dropouts/discuss and evaluate the lack of choices available to high school dropouts b. Recalling facts-list opportunities that are available to high school graduates/discuss likely outcome of being a dropout c. Identifying examples of concepts-view or listen to testimonies of adult dropouts that are homeless, drug dealers, prostitutes, alcoholics / View, listen to, or meet teenage dropoutspregnant, working at low level jobs, alcohol & drug dependent/ View or listen to success stories of students and adults who stayed in or went back to school. d. Applying principles- Discuss how preparing for the future relates to your own life and the choices you would like to make to become successful. If you are returning to school after
2 dropping out, relate your own experience to that of others. If you are thinking of dropping out of high school describe what you think you life will be like in ten years. 4. A set of essential content the basic ideas and skills that will allow the learner to complete the task or understand the content. Prior to this lesson the students will have been enrolled in an online high school and know the necessary skills to submit assignments, participate in the discussion board, and attend live class sessions. The student will be directed to and instructed on how to use, post, and participate in the classroom blog. Students will use the blog to post personal observations, reflections, experiences, helpful tips, goals, dreams, and career or college plans. Students may post anonymously. Students will browse the Internet to search for sites related to resources, career and college choices, and information about high school dropouts. Some students may need an introduction or review to navigate through ecollege. 5. An evaluation consisting of a test or observation an assessment, observation or product showing that the objectives can be accomplished in the real-world setting. The students will be evaluated by successfully completing work and/or college applications and requirements. Maintaining a portfolio of all assignments and submit it to the teacher at the end of the unit. Students will also be graded on live class participation, discussion board posts, contributing to the classroom blog, attitude, attendance, and effort. 6. A method to help participants learn the method to deliver the content; a lesson. Introduction: Teacher will introduce the course, Career & College Plan, begin by introducing Unit One, and explain the social and economic risks for students that dropout out of school and the importance of making a career or college plan. Instruction: The teacher will go over the Career & College Goals syllabus letting students know what will be required of them throughout the semester. Next, the teacher will discuss Unit 1- Deciding Who You are and What You Want to Do and the consequences of dropping out of school and not having a career or college plan. The teacher will discuss the social and economic hardships that come with not having a high school diploma. The teacher will also discuss the various risks involved. The teacher will provide reasons why teenagers leave school. Since this is an online course the teacher will explain the technology and the computer skills the students need to complete the course. The student will also be introduced to new technology. Explanation: The percentage of teenagers that dropout of high school is increasing every year. With this increase comes the risk of social and economic hardships. The teacher will explain/discuss some of the reasons teenagers (Factors, Drugs, Alcohol, Family issues, Physical abuse, Gangs, Pregnancy, Depression, Financial problems, Low self esteem, Bullying) dropout out of school. The teacher will also explain and show the advantages and rewards of staying in school (be prepared for college or vocational school, better paying jobs, develop good work ethic, greater earning potential, more stable family life, less likely to go to prison). The teacher will assign the first section of the Career and College Goals
3 (Deciding Who You are and What You Want to Do) course and explain the assignments. It is important for students to achieve a deeper understanding of themselves (personally type, learning style, motivation, drive). Finally, the teacher will give a live orientation class reviewing ecollege, how to post on the discussion board, how to submit assignments, how to contact teacher, and where to go for technical support. There will be an additional class instructing the students how to use and post on the class blog. Demonstration: Discussion board- The teacher will participate in and monitor the student discussion boards. Students will communicate with their peers, answering and replying to posts thoughtfully and respectfully. Live Classes in Elluminate- Students will attend live classes to view videos, PowerPoint Presentations, Guest Speakers Students will have the opportunity for live class discussion using webcams Classroom Blog- Students will be expected to contribute to the classroom blogs by adding personal reflections, opinions, poetry, stories, videos, images/posts must reflect the overall theme of the course, and posts can be ominous. Practice: Students will login to the course and complete the required assignments and Assessments Students will communicate with teacher through IM, Yahoo IM, Skype, , or by phone Students will attend live class sessions, contribute and take an active part in class, and occasionally use the webcam while speaking Students will comment, submit and post on the classroom blog Students will actively participate in the class discussion boards Feedback: The teacher will grade classroom assignments, discussion posts, blog posts, and effort Students will get a lot of feedback from each other through encouragement, sharing of goals and ideas, and constructive criticism Conclusion: To conclude the Unit the students will share what they think they have learned and any
4 insight they may have gained (about themselves, goals and plans) through participating in the activities assigned. Motivation: Meaningfulness content and activities must have meaning for the learner This lesson is very meaningful to the students since it is addressing their entire future. Students will learn the consequences of dropping out of school and the positive outcome of choosing to stay in school and making a career or continuing education plan. Pleasant consequences the effects that achieving the goal will have on the learner By achieving the goal the students will have a direction that will give the confidence, drive, and motivation to stay in school. Students will evaluate some of the stress that comes with indecision about the future. Novelty an attention-getting, humorous or curious manner that relates to the useful information in your lesson Since this is an online class I will have my students meet me in my virtual classroom where I will show YouTube videos (funny and inspirational) about staying in school. We will then have a discussion about the points addressed in the video. I will have guest speakers-former dropouts that went back to school and are successful. Socialization - a strong motivator for student learning The students will participate in online discussions, live synchronous classes, and the blog. The teacher will monitor and participate in the discussion board. The teacher will also instruct and monitor the synchronous sessions, provide content, resources, and guest speakers. Students will feel connected and closer to their classmates. Audience For what audience are you designing this lesson? Consider the following: Age: High school 11th and 12th Grade Skill level (including technology skills) High school level. Students will need to be proficient in technology to successfully navigate the ecollege course. Prerequisite knowledge (including technology background) Students will know and model digital and etiquette and display correct social behavior Students will have to understand how to use technology systems Students will have to know how to search the Internet Students will have experience working in groups
