4 TAKING YOU BEYOND A WORLD OF METHODOLOGY We like to compare project management to flying a plane. You get into a thin metal tube with wings filled with highly explosive fuel. You accelerate down the concrete runway at 150mph. Then you are thrown into the air, accelerated to 550mph and taken to 30,000 feet above planet Earth. You then get thrown downwards towards another piece of concrete and hopefully arrive at your destination in one piece and without incident. The ilot has taken you on a project. Methodologies constitute the project checklist. Yet if you boarded a plane and the ilot told you that he knows the checklist backwards but he s never flown before you d hop off the plane! That s why you need more than just a methodology to become a successful roject Manager. You need to hone your people management skills and the latest research in order to succeed. 5 $135 MILLION LOST Research by MI suggests less than 33% of all projects meet their goals and business purpose and 17% fail completely. Failed projects cost your organisation dearly for every $1 billion invested in failed projects $135 million is irretrievably lost. The research shows how organisations that consistently perform badly against Time, Budget and erformance measures put 14 times more capital at risk. The message is simple; organisations who develop project management skills and put in place appropriate processes and systems are much more likely to achieve the results they need. IT IS IMORTANT THAT YOU AND YOUR ORGANISATION: Take control of your role in projects repare for a volatile future Learn tried and tested project management tools Become more effective at stakeholder management Build and nurture your people skills Are decisive under pressure and clear in stressful situations. All these and more are covered in this important course. General Enquiries: W: T: +44 (0) E: som.action@cranfield.ac.uk

8 ADVICE ON RINCE2 & IMROVING ROJECT ERFORMANCE rince2 has done much to raise the standards of roject Management and we support its use in the industry. However rince2 is only a methodology. In broad terms it tells you what to do to manage your project, who should do it and when it should be done during the project s life cycle. WHAT IT DOES NOT REALLY TELL YOU IS HOW TO DO IT For example, how to create a project schedule or how to prepare a cost estimate or how to work with stakeholders etc. AN IDEAL SRINGBOARD I takes you through different practices and procedures and allows you to work out which are the most appropriate approach for you then lets you test them in our simulated project environment. It encourages you to work out how to do it and not to just follow the procedure.
