1 Write for Mathematics in Michigan Mathematics in Michigan is a resource for Michigan Mathematics teachers, students, teacher educators and others with an interest in mathematics teaching and learning published by MCTM. The Publications Committee of MIM is seeking high-quality manuscripts for publication. Of particular interest are manuscripts that address the Common Cores State Standards in Mathematics (CCSS-M), Standards of Mathematical Practice. Classroom teachers The Committee encourages classroom teachers to submit manuscripts that: Focus on a Standard of Mathematical Practice from the CCSS-M at a particular grade band. Are of interest to and targeted toward other mathematics educators. Share innovative activities that engage students in substantive mathematics content and the Standards of Mathematical Practice. Mathematics Educators The Committee continues to encourage teacher educators, administrators, mathematicians, mathematics supervisors and others to submit manuscripts that: Recognize and address the particular needs and interests of students surrounding the Standards of Mathematical Practice Recognize and address the particular needs and interests of mathematics teachers surrounding the Standards of Mathematical Practice General Information Potential authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts that address the teaching and learning of mathematics. Feature manuscripts should be: words in length Figures and photographs should be at the end of the manuscript Author identification should appear on a cover sheet only and not in the text of the manuscript. This will maintain author anonymity throughout the review process.

2 Publication Guidelines Mathematics in Michigan 1. Feature manuscripts should be between words. Please do not exceed 2000 words, including tables and figures. Only a reasonable number of tables and figures that are essential to the reader s understanding should be included. 2. Use double spacing for all material. This includes quoted matter, lists, tables, notes, references and bibliographies. Please use 12 point, Times New Roman font. 3. Use 1 inch margins for the sides, top and bottom of each page. 4. Indicate a paragraph by indenting the first line rather than by including an extra space between paragraphs. 5. Provide accurate and complete bibliographical information. All references cited in the manuscript should be listed at the end of the manuscript. Please use APA style for references. 6. Use dialogue and direct quotes sparingly. Incorporate the key ideas of conversations into the text when possible. If material is quoted, supply the complete source in the references and cite the page number with the quotation. 7. Do not use footnotes. Integrate this information into your manuscript. 8. No author identification should appear in the manuscript. Manuscript title and name(s) of author(s) should be in an Author Cover Letter only. Do not reference your own work or your school in a way that compromises the blind review process. Use pseudonyms for students or colleagues names and blind project or grant information, acknowledgements, and conference presentations appearing in a manuscript. 9. Please proofread and spell-check your manuscript before submission. Review it for grammar, coherence, completeness, mathematical correctness, and accuracy of references. Be sure to spell out all proper names, and fully identify all organizations and groups that are mentioned by initials or acronyms. 10. Materials that have been published elsewhere or are being considered for publication by other journals should not be submitted.

3 Author Instructions Mathematics in Michigan Before submitting your manuscript Be sure that the manuscript adheres to the guidelines outlined on the MCTM website, including the length requirement of words. Gather all of the following information: All authors o First and Last Names o Address o Telephone numbers o addresses o Photograph of each author (black/white or color) Title (limited to 6 words or less) Abstract (limited to 50 words or less) Manuscript files in MS Word format (Do NOT submit a PDF) Figures/Images as separate files. These should NOT be embedded in the article file. Cover letter Please include all author information, title and abstract on an Author Cover Letter. 4 Write for the MCTM Newsletter The MCTM Newsletter is a resource for Michigan Mathematics teachers, students, teacher educators and others with an interest in mathematics teaching and learning published by MCTM. The Publications Committee is looking for articles that are words or less that focus on a quick insight into teaching or valuable information that mathematics teachers in Michigan would be interested in hearing more about. Mathematics Educators The Committee encourages classroom teachers, teacher educators, administrators, mathematicians, mathematics supervisors and others to submit short manuscripts that: Are of interest to and targeted toward other mathematics educators, Share innovative activities, Provide information regarding projects or happenings across the state. General Information Potential authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts that address the teaching and learning of mathematics. Manuscripts should be: words in length Figures and photographs should be at the end of the manuscript. Please include at most one figure or photograph. Author identification should appear on a cover sheet only and not in the text of the manuscript. This will maintain author anonymity throughout the review process. 5 Getting Started Are you thinking, Who me? But I have nothing to write about. Think again. The pages of the MCTM Newsletter and Mathematics in Michigan are perfect places for teacherwritten articles that highlight useful aspects of their practices. Often, we may think that the things we do in our classrooms are old hat because we do them routinely when in fact they may be quite innovative. The Publications Committee urges all readers, especially classroom teachers, to consider writing. Starting the Process Writing is a process, not an event. It will take time to develop your ideas into a coherent article. Begin by keeping a notebook and jotting down your ideas, successes, and concerns. The reflection on these notes can become the basis for a manuscript. Try to keep samples of students work to include in your article; readers value such examples as being useful tools that help the classroom aspect of your work come alive. Read past articles in the newsletter or Mathematics in Michigan to help you get a sense of what makes a good manuscript. Picking a Topic When you decide to write, look through recent publications to see what topics have been discussed. You are encouraged to write on whatever aspect of teaching and learning mathematics you know best. Some topics are popular, ongoing themes, such as algebraic thinking, professional development, and problem solving. Whether it is an old topic with a fresh slant or a relatively new topic, pick one central idea and stay with it.
