1 Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway the Cisco IOS Session Border Controller Cisco Unified Communications is a comprehensive IP communications system of voice, video, data, and mobility products and applications. It enables more effective, more secure, more personal communications that directly affect both sales and profitability. It brings people together by enabling a new way of communicating where your business moves with you, security is everywhere, and information is always available...whenever and wherever it is needed. Cisco Unified Communications is part of an integrated solution that includes network infrastructure, security, mobility, network management products, lifecycle services, flexible deployment and outsourced management options, end-user and partner financing packages, and third-party communications applications. Product Overview The Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway is a session border controller (SBC) that interconnects independent voice-over-ip (VoIP) networks for data, voice, and video transport. SBCs are critical components for scaling networks from islands within a single customer network to an end-to-end IP community. The Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway is an integrated Cisco IOS Software application that runs on the Cisco 2800 and 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISRs), the Cisco 2600XM Multiservice Routers, the Cisco 3700 Series Multiservice Access Routers, the Cisco 7200 Series Routers, the Cisco 7301 Router, and the Cisco AS5350XM and AS5400XM Universal Gateways. Today, the Cisco IP-to-IP Gateway is used by service provider, enterprise, and commercial customers to interconnect Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and H.323 voice and video networks. The Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway is a simple and cost-effective solution that provides a network-to-network demarcation interface for signaling interworking, media interworking, address and port translations, billing, security, and quality-of-service (QoS) and bandwidth management. The gateway performs the same breadth of functions as a Cisco public switched telephone network (PSTN)-to-IP gateway, only now it also joins two VoIP or video call legs without the need for the PSTN. Cisco IOS Software helps enable the simultaneous operation of the following: Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway An application that terminates and reoriginates both signaling and media streams while performing services of an SBC between IP networks Cisco IOS H.323 Gatekeeper An application that acts as the point of control for a variety of voice and video components that can be attached to an IP network such as IP telephony devices, IP-PSTN gateways, H.323 videoconferencing endpoints, and H.323 multipoint control units while facilitating build-out of large-scale multimedia service networks Cisco TDM Gateway An application that allows time-division multiplexing (TDM) switching between TDM interfaces or TDM-to-IP interfaces All contents are Copyright Cisco Systems, Inc. 4 Feature Availability The Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway Gatekeeper TDM is built on Cisco IOS Software and runs on the following platforms: Cisco AS5400XM and Cisco AS5350XM Universal Gateways Cisco 7301 Router Cisco 7200VXR Series Routers Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers (Cisco 3825 and 3845) Cisco 3700 Series Multiservice Access Routers (Cisco 3745 and 3725) Cisco 2800 Series Integrated Services Routers (Cisco 2801, 2811, 2821, and 2851) Cisco 2600XM Series Multiservice Routers (Cisco 2610XM, 2611XM, 2620XM, 2621XM, 2650XM, 2651XM, and the Cisco 2691) A minimum of 64-MB flash memory and 256-MB DRAM is required, and a minimum of 1 Fast Ethernet port for an external interface is required. The Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway does not require any other hardware modules (no network modules or WAN interface cards). For transcoding, one of the following products and appropriate DSPs is required: Cisco High-Density Voice Network Module (part numbers NM-HDV and NM-HDV- SERVERFARM) Cisco IP Communications Voice/Fax Network Module (part numbers NM-HD-1V, NM-HD- 2V, NM-HD-2VE, and PVDM2-XX) on Cisco IP Communications High-Density Digital Voice/Fax Network Module (part number NM-HDV2) More details for transcoding are available at: The Cisco 7200 Series Routers and the Cisco 7301 Router do not support transcoding. The Cisco IOS Software images listed in Table 4 allow the simultaneous operation of the Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway, the Cisco IOS Software H.323 Gatekeeper, and the Cisco TDM Gateway all on the same device. The recommended Cisco IOS Software releases for the features mentioned previously are the Cisco IOS Software 12.4T release train. Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway with Open Settlement Protocol Open Settlement Protocol (OSP) on the Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway helps VoIP service providers use the routing, billing, and settlement capabilities offered by OSP-based clearinghouses. The Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway with OSP requires a separate feature license and a separate Cisco IOS Software image with cryptographic capabilities. 5 OSP features include the following: Multiple dial peers and a single OSP server Flexible call types: OSP-in to OSP-out, OSP-in to H.323-RAS-out, and H.323-RAS-in to OSP-out Triple Digital Encryption Standard (3DES) and 128-bit encryption The OSP-enabled IP-to-IP gateways require a cryptography-enabled adventerprisek9_ivs Cisco IOS Software image. Summary The Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway provides direct IP interconnections with lower cost and greater flexibility than TDM interconnections. This gateway helps service providers and enterprises decrease VoIP latency, improve voice quality, and effectively support rich-media services, thereby allowing Cisco Unified Communications products to work transparently in both intra- and intersite deployments.
