INTRODUCTION Today s large enterprises are dealing with explosive data growth, increasingly complex backup and retention requirements, and shrinking backup windows. The advanced backup management capabilities of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) backup application provides data managers with unprecedented control over the protection of large data volumes. With TSM, data managers can schedule backups effectively, implement a tiered storage model, and tune backup policies to meet their regulatory and corporate requirements. In addition, the speed provided by the TSM disk pool enables them to back up large volumes of data within short backup windows. The Sepaton S2100 data protection platform is an IBM TotalStorage Proven solution that delivers industry-leading deterministic performance for TSM - and very large database (VLDB)-optimized deduplication to enable data managers to get the greatest value from their TSM environment while reducing the cost and complexity of their data protection infrastructures. Sepaton S2100: Architecture Designed for Data-Intensive Enterprises Unlike other disk-based data protection technologies, Sepaton delivers deterministic backup performance of up to 80 TB/hour, the highest ingest/ restore rate in the industry-regardless of data type, data change rate or capacity utilization of the system. Cost-Saving TSM-Optimized Data Protection Sepaton s unique DeltaScale architecture and ContentAware technology enable the S2100 to deliver: The industry s fastest backup, restore, replication, and deduplication processing. Reduce or eliminate primary disk by backing up to Sepaton. Uparalleled capacity reduction of progressive incremental backup environments and multiplexed, multi-streamed VLDB environments Modular, independent scalability of performance and capacity Configuration of up to 1536 virtual devices and thousands of mount points for optimal TSM efficiency. Bandwidth-optimized replication moves petabytes of data to an offsite disaster recovery location without taxing network resources. Massive single system capacity cuts administrative costs and streamlines data center operations. Storage Pooling feature protects data in separate, secure pools. Secure Erasure feature automates the destruction of expired data in a NIST-compliant erasure Sepaton s unique DeltaScale grid architecture enables data managers to start with a system sized for their current needs and to add performance or capacity in convenient increments as their data protection needs grow. The S2100 data protection platform delivers enterpriseclass performance, scalability, deduplication, and management control required in an enterprise TSM environment. Powerful ContentAware technology collects and uses metadata from the backup stream to perform highly efficient, byte-level deduplication of massive data volumes without slowing performance. This technology enables Sepaton s DeltaStor software to deliver the industry s only deduplication optimized for progressive incremental TSM backup environments. Sepaton s unique DBeXstream technology enables DeltaStor to deduplicate multi-streamed, multiplexed very large databases at the byte level without compromising performance. The following pages describe key challenges facing TSM environments and the ways these breakthrough technologies help enterprise data managers overcome them while saving time, reducing costs, and improving efficiency in their TSM environments. 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 1

Overview of Key TSM Processes For most data types, TSM typically conducts progressive Incremental backups of only new data that has been added since the previous backup. In a typical implementation (see figure 1), TSM first backs up client data to the TSM Primary Disk Pool, which is typically sized for a minimum of one nightly backup. Data is then copied from the Primary Tape Pool to the Secondary Off-Site Tape Pool for disaster recovery (DR) protection. Next, the TSM Database Backup is performed, which provides the sync point for recovery point objectives (RPO) in a disaster recovery scenario. TSM Client Primary Disk Pool Primary Tape Pool Secondary Off-Site Tape Pool Tape Data TSM Server Primary Tape Pool Figure 1. The typical TSM Backup process moves each backup volume from Application Servers to the Primary Disk Pool to the Primary Tape Pool, then to the Secondary Off-Site Tape Pool for off-site disaster protection. Typically, TSM then performs a Disk Pool Flush to Sequential Media. This Migration process moves data from the Primary Disk Pool to the Primary Tape Pool, where it is stored on a tape library. TSM also performs the rest of its Daily Housekeeping Processes (Reclamation) in readiness for the next Backup cycle. TSM Housekeeping Process During the Housekeeping Process, TSM expires data and performs its Reclamation Processes to consolidate tape usage and reduce unused slack space. As shown in figure 2 on the previous page, from the start of a backup to the completion of the last process, Housekeeping may take more than 26 hours to complete. The TSM Backup and Housekeeping processes can take more than 24 hours to complete. The Housekeeping processes are highly I/O intensive and can dramatically slow performance and network speed. 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 2

During that time, large volumes of data are moved and I/Ointensive functions (e.g., Migration, Storage Pool, Expiration, etc.) are performed. As a result, performance throughput and network speeds can be dramatically slowed. If Housekeeping is not completed within the Backup Window, the backup infrastructure may be slowed even further as systems simultaneously perform the next Backup as well as any necessary Restores. TSM Reclamation TSM Reclamation consolidates data from several tapes onto a single additional tape. In this process, reclaimed data is moved from a volume that is currently partly filled to an empty scratch volume to consolidate tape usage. While TSM is very efficient with its tape consolidation through Reclamation, it can tax CPU cycles, I/O capacity, and mount points and cause excessive wear on tape media and tape drives. This impact is particularly severe if it is moving many small blocks of data. A single-thread Reclamation process requires one tape mount for the target tape and multiple mounts for the source tapes. In the case of Primary Tape Pools residing on a Sepaton system, creating these mount points for the source tapes take only a few seconds. This has a huge positive impact on the Reclamation performance, due to the savings in mount point time, especially in systems that employ aggressive Reclamation for their Offsite Copy Pools. TSM Reclamation for Off-site Copy Pools retrieves its data from the Primary Tape Pools to create the new off-site Reclaimed Volumes. 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 3

Challenges in TSM Environments TSM is designed to help enterprises manage their data, based on factors such as the relative importance of the data to business operations (criticality level), the level of accessibility and availability needed, the quality of service committed to under service level agreements, and the cost and administration time required to adequately protect it. Despite the many advantages of TSM, enterprise data centers may also face a variety of challenges when using physical tape or disk-based backup solutions without sufficient scalability, performance, or deduplication efficiency. Challenge: Exponential Data Growth Causes Rising Primary Disk Pool Costs According to leading analysts, data volumes in today s enterprises are growing at rates as high as 50 percent compounded annually. Data center managers have to accommodate not only organic growth from ongoing business activities but also the sudden explosive growth caused by mergers and acquisitions. This growth is further exacerbated by the nightly or weekly full backups required for large databases in TSM environments. As data volumes grow, the Primary Disk Pool is filled faster. This can trigger unplanned Migrations to the Primary Tape Pool. Migrations are I/O and CPUintensive and the speed of their completion is limited by the performance of physical tape drives. Additionally, if the Migration occurs while backups are still in progress, the result is a dramatic reduction in backup performance as the TSM server is forced to simultaneously back up and migrate data. As described earlier, this performance issue can be worsened by I/O intensive Housekeeping processes, such Reclamation. To address these issues, enterprises are forced to purchase more and more costly Fibre Channel disk for their Primary Disk Pool and more tape drives for their physical tape libraries. Even disk-based backup solutions with limited scalability are quickly overwhelmed by the fast data growth that is typical in large TSM environments. Enterprises often try to address these challenges by dividing their backup onto multiple separate backup systems causing costly data center sprawl. Healthcare Network Improves TSM Environment The aging physical tape library used by a large Massachusettsbased healthcare network could no longer meet its backup windows. The Sepaton S2100-ES2 provided an easyto-implement solution that preserved their investment in existing systems. The massively scalable performance and capacity will meet their needs in both the near and long term. The system is controlling power, cooling, and data center floor space costs by protecting 120 TB in a single system. Sepaton s consultative approach and in-depth expertise in enterprise TSM environments provided a comprehensive, costsaving solution. The costs of data center sprawl are significant and comprise both the capital expense required to purchase multiple new systems and also the significant administration costs required to manage them. Operating costs of power, floor space, and HVAC required to maintain systems also increase. while overall deduplication efficiency decreases since deduplication only occurs within siloed systems. 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 4

Solution: Sepaton Eliminates Primary Disk Pool, Speeds Housekeeping The S2100 eliminates data center sprawl by enabling enterprise data managers to protect petabytes of data in a single system. The S2100 is equipped with high-density drives and hardware compression to optimize its physical storage capacity. to store as much as 2 PB of data on a single system (before deduplication). The S2100 is built on proprietary DeltaScale grid architecture, which enables the addition of performance or capacity independently in convenient increments. Start with a single Sepaton processing node and add up to seven more. All TSM Client backup, restore, replication, and deduplication processing is dynamically load balanced across all nodes. As shown in figure 3, this high performance enables enterprise TSM environments to retain the Primary Disk Pool data in a Sepaton S2100 diskbased data protection platform and to dramatically reduce or eliminate the need to purchase costly FC disk and tape drives. The S2100 speeds backups and the Housekeeping Process (see figure 4) while eliminating the performance limitations of physical tape libraries (linear reads, media failure, mount delays), in this example, reducing Housekeeping time by more than 9 hours. Key benefits: TSM Server Disk Platform Off-Site Tape Pool Figure 3. A Sepaton S2100 data protection platform in place of a Primary Disk Pool and Primary Tape Pool. Cut cost of purchasing primary disk Meet backup windows, restore SLAs and RPOs with deterministic, wire-speed backup, and restore performance Reduce the need for physical tape to off-site recovery only Eliminate Migration Process Reclaim drives, media, library slots BACKUP & DELTAREMOTE REPLICATION 7:00 PM 2:00 AM LAN Backups to Disk Pool MIGRATION Remote replication 4:00 AM- 8:00 AM RECLAMATION 10:00 AM 12:00 PM Consolidates tape data Free tape capacity 7hrs 2 hrs 4 hrs. 2 hrs 2 hrs 17:00:00 Total Housekeeping 7:00 PM 2:00 AM 12:00 PM TSM DATABASE BACKUP 2:00 AM 4:00 AM Create off-site copy EXPIRATION 8:00 AM 10:00 AM Expire Inventory Identify old data Figure 4. In this example the process required only 17 hours to complete. 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 5

Challenge: Specialized Requirements of Very Large Databases Enterprises are increasingly dependent on large database-driven systems, such as Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, SAP, and Microsoft Exchange, to perform their core business functions. Databases present a variety of challenges in TSM environments. First, data from these systems as well as network attached storage (NAS) data in an NDMP protocol cannot be backed up using the TSM Progressive Incremental Backup process. Instead, these data types are backed up daily in full or using a combination of daily incremental backups and weekly full backups. Many companies back up databases and NDMP data directly to the Primary Tape Pool in a LAN-free backup process. These full backup schemes dramatically increase the amount of duplicate data stored and require more performance and tape media for both backup and off-site storage. Second, database data (as well as other data in TSM Progressive Incremental Backups) is stored data in segments of less than 8 KB, too small for hash-based, inline deduplication technologies to efficiently deduplicate without dramatically slowing performance. Inline/hash technologies analyze segments of data as they are being backed up and assign a unique identifier called a fingerprint to each segment. Most of these technologies use an algorithm that computes a cryptographic hash value from a fixed or variable segment of data in the backup stream, regardless of the data type. The fingerprints are stored in an index. As each backup is performed, the fingerprints of incoming data are compared to those already in the index to determine whether a duplicate exists. The fingerprint assignment, index lookup, and pointer replacement steps must all performed before the data is written to disk. To contain the size of the index (which grows larger with every new backup), inline/ hash-based deduplication technologies typically process large duplicate chunk sizes and ignore chunks smaller than 8 KB so that they can provide reasonable performance and avoid causing a bottleneck. As a result, most large databases with duplicate data in <8KB chunks gain little capacity reduction benefit from deduplication with hash-based solutions. This not only drives up capacity requirements, but also reduces replication efficiency. Third, inline/hash-based deduplication technologies cannot effectively deduplicate multiplexed, multi-streamed databases. These large databases are backed up via intrinsically slower single threaded schema. In the case of Oracle databases, they may require the use of third-party software on the database server. Solution: Sepaton Database Optimized Backup and Deduplication Sepaton s DeltaStor, byte differential deduplication examines data at the byte level without slowing performance. ContentAware technology uses metadata in the backup stream to identify the subset of data that contains duplicates. This subset of data is then examined at the byte level in a process that eliminates the need for performance choking hash-index analysis and reduces capacity requirements at industry-leading ratios. In addition, powerful DBeXstream technology enables fast multi-stream, multiplexed database backup/restore with industry leading deduplication ratios based on 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 6

Sepaton s unique byte level differencing technology. As a result, Sepaton provides the industry s only deduplication optimized for Tivoli Storage Manager progressive incremental backup and multiplexed, multi-streamed database environments. Challenge: Slow Performance In a typical TSM environment, entire backups are moved three or four times by the TSM server as the Backup/Archive and Housekeeping Processes are performed. Each of these data movements requires significant performance to complete. As described above, this performance may be impeded by I/O-intensive Housekeeping processes, such as Migration, Offsite Tape Copy, and Reclamation. However, adding physical tape drives to provide the mount points needed to deliver this performance can be costly and time-consuming. Solution: Sepaton Delivers the Industry s Fastest Performance Costly Mount Points TSM data recovery performance can be slow. Although TSM provides a variety of features, such as collocation to enable efficient data restores, the linear-read nature of tapes and the limited throughput of tape drives as well as the intensive tape media management can cause lengthy restore times. TSM typically requires numerous tapes to be loaded and unloaded to restore data. With tape load times of approximately 90 seconds each, these load times can cause a significant amount of idle time for the TSM server. Additionally, the large number of seeks created by the restoration process can dramatically reduce restore times. Sepaton s unique forward referencing methodology maintains the most recent backup in a format ready for instantaneous recovery without the need for lengthy seeks or reassembly. DeltaStor software analyzes data within the backup stream as it is being written to disk, to identify duplicates with optimal efficiency. As deduplication reduces data volume, capacity is automatically made available and managed through built-in self-management functions. DeltaStor software performs data deduplication concurrently and outside of the primary data path, enabling it to maintain wire-speed backup and restore performance. The TSM Active Copy is not deduplicated. Rather, it is kept ready for immediate restores. Challenge: Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Challenges A key factor in sustaining high backup performance is the ability to provide multiple mount points to stream backups from several servers simultaneously. In a physical tape library environment, enterprises need to purchase numerous tape drives to meet their need for mount points. If an enterprise disk-based data protection environment does not have sufficient scalability, enterprises may need to purchase numerous independent systems and divide backups among them. In addition to the added capital cost, this option also adds significant administrative complexity. Data managers in TSM environments often face a variety of challenges to their ability to maintain continuous operation (business continuity) and provide sufficient disaster recovery protection. For example, the movement of large data volumes that is intrinsic to the TSM process stresses tape library systems, causing frequent tape drive failures. Fixing these failures can be a costly and time-consuming process. 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 7

The Secondary Off-Site Tape Pool Copy process is typically slow and highly manual. In addition, moving physical tapes to an off-site disaster recovery facility introduces the risks of tape theft or loss and increased human error. Solution: Sepaton Disaster Protection with Network-Optimized Replication The S2100-ES2 also features DeltaRemote software for network-optimized, secure replication to reduce risk and eliminate costly, time-consuming administration of tape media, by making remote replication over a WAN or LAN fast, simple, and costeffective. DeltaRemote software works in conjunction with DeltaStor byte differential deduplication software to reduce the volume of data to be transmitted to a remote site by as much as 97 percent. As a result, massive volumes of data can be backed up and replicated to at the fastest performance rates in the industry. DeltaRemote software provides enterprises with the flexibility and control to choose the data they want to deduplicate and replicate for maximum efficiency. It is fully integrated with the S2100 management console to cut administration time with automated remote replication based on company policies. Users can choose to replicate data with or without enabling deduplication. Features include the following: Replication status view shows the percent completion of replication jobs (by bar code) through each phase of replication. Replication trend data. Collect up to 90 days of data on replication performance and efficiency for system optimization as well as detailed trend analysis and bandwidth planning. User-friendly reports put key data at your fingertips, including time of replication job transfer, time completed, percentage completed, and transfer status. Open data format lets you upload data into third-party reporting tools for further analysis. Windowing policies enable you to choose the data you want to replicate and set the time and frequency of replication. Challenge: Ongoing Tuning and Management for Efficiency From identifying performance bottlenecks to anticipating capacity requirements to ensuring optimal system utilization, TSM environments require a significant amount of administrative management and control to ensure the systems are tuned for optimal performance and efficiency. For example, data center managers need to ensure that their Primary Disk Pool is large enough to handle growing data volumes without overbuying costly FC disk. Reclamation thresholds need to be monitored and adjusted to ensure optimal media utilization and performance. Solution: Tune Sepaton Deduplication for Optimal Efficiency Sepaton S2100 features DeltaStor data software, a powerful enterprise-class deduplication solution that addresses the capacity-reduction requirements of a TSM environment without slowing backup or restore performance. This concurrent deduplication process moves data to the safety of the backup environment and performs deduplication and replication concurrently, using all available processing resources for maximum sustained performance. 400 Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 8

TSM environments may have scenarios where deduplication of the backup data is not wanted. For example, some data may be subject to regulations requiring that it be kept intact at all times. Other data, such as medical and check imaging data, may not be suitable for deduplication. In another scenario, enterprises may need to perform client-side compression to perform their Backup Process over the LAN. DeltaStor deduplication allows users to choose the data they want to deduplicate by client or data type. Whereas competing deduplication solutions deduplicate all backup data, DeltaStor enables enterprises to reduce unnecessary load on TSM resources and to comply with regulatory requirements. Challenge: Disruptive Implementation of New Technologies TSM is a powerful application that enables large data centers to manage complex data backup, retention, and replication policies in an automated, efficient process. Introducing new data protection solutions into this complex environment can be disruptive and costly if the new technology requires changes to policies or complete replacement of existing tape library technologies. Solution: Fast, Seamless Integration Unlike other solutions that require a rip and replace implementation, the Sepaton S2100 is a disk-based platform that appears to TSM as a standard physical tape library. It enables enterprise data managers to implement it without disruption or changes to backup policies. It enables data managers to configure virtual tape drives (mount points) and virtual tape libraries as needed. Up to 1536 devices and cartridges can be configured per S Nickerson Road, Marlborough, MA P: 866.Sepaton or F: Page 9
