Opportunity and Challenge Profile Search for the Dean, Gevirtz Graduate School of Education The seeks a dynamic, visionary, and experienced leader for the position of Dean of the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education (GGSE). Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor, the Dean will serve as the academic leader and chief executive of the GGSE. The GGSE affirms a broad, comprehensive view of education rooted in the belief that the key to educational success includes the psycho-social and cognitive development of students, as well as the well-being of the adults, families, and institutions that serve and support them. The successful candidate will further the GGSE s academic excellence and prominence in the nation and around the world. Founded in 1944, UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) is a member of the 10-campus University of California (UC) system. More than half of UC Santa Barbara s undergraduates participate directly in faculty research, and the campus takes pride in its student diversity, including the largest percentage of Latino/a students in the AAU. The campus has been particularly successful in gaining federal support for research, and the Campaign for UC Santa Barbara has raised $800 million toward the billion-dollar goal to ensure the excellence of the campus and its programs for future generations. The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education enrolls approximately 400 graduate students and awards more than 200 academic degrees and professional credentials each year. The GGSE has an academic staff of 48 ladder and affiliated faculty and 51 lecturers and researchers. The School consists of the Department of Education, which includes the Teacher Education Program (TEP), and the Department of Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology (CCSP). The GGSE maintains several research centers and clinics including the Hosford Counseling and Psychological Services Clinic, Koegel Autism Center, Center for School-Based Youth Development, CalTeach/Science and Mathematics Initiative, and McEnroe Reading and Language Arts Clinic. The school also provides three undergraduate minors: Applied Psychology, Education, and Science and Mathematics Education. The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings place the school in the top 50 education schools among public universities. The new Dean will provide strategic vision, intellectual leadership, and collaborative management for the GGSE and will continue to build the School s prominence in research, teaching, and service. In leading the GGSE to achieving its strategic goals, the Dean will address a set of key opportunities and challenges: Provide strategic direction to further enhance the academic prominence of the GGSE within UC Santa Barbara, the UC system, and beyond, Create a more sustainable financial model for the future, Cultivate and expand research to drive academic excellence,

Recruit, develop and retain diverse and engaged faculty, students and staff who will compel the future of the GGSE, and Position the GGSE as a valued resource for the Santa Barbara community and a model for schools of education nationally and internationally. A list of the desired qualifications and characteristics of the Dean can be found at the conclusion of this document, which was prepared by the search advisory committee with the assistance of, a national executive search firm, to provide background information and detail the key opportunities and challenges related to the position. All inquiries, nominations, and confidential applications should be directed to the parties listed at the conclusion of this document. About UC Santa Barbara UC Santa Barbara, a premier research institution with an outstanding faculty and talented and diverse student body, is distinguished by its interdisciplinary programs and commitment to innovation. Academic units on campus include the College of Letters and Science, the largest with more than 17,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students, the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Creative Studies, and the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management. Because teaching and research go hand in hand at UC Santa Barbara, students are full participants in an educational journey of discovery that stimulates independent thought, critical reasoning, and creativity. The academic community of faculty, students, and staff is characterized by a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration that is responsive to the needs of our multicultural and global society. In recent years, the campus has enrolled the most academically competitive and ethnically diverse classes in its history. Its commitment to excellence and diversity is indicated by its designation as an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, an institution with percent Latino/a enrollment and the potential to meet the federal HSI definition in the near future. UC Santa Barbara also participates in NCAA Division I athletics, with roughly 450 student athletes enrolled across the university. The UC Santa Barbara campus is dedicated to the principles of sustainability, with a history of conservation and preservation ingrained in the ethos of the university. Active and award-winning sustainability programs span facilities, academics, research, and local community interactions. UC Santa Barbara grew from an independent teachers college founded in 1909 and joined the University of California system as its third general campus in In 1995, UC Santa Barbara was elected to the prestigious 62-member Association of American Universities, placing it in the top two percent of all colleges and universities in North America. UC Santa Barbara s 1,052-member faculty includes five Nobel Laureates; numerous Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Endowment for the Humanities, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellows; winners of the National Medal of Science, Fields Medal, and Millennium Technology Prize; and scores of elected members or fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and other leading professional associations. UC Santa Barbara has a total operating budget of over $650 million and a professional staff of over 3,500. Together with teaching, research is fundamental to UC Santa Barbara s mission. Extramural research funding has doubled in the past dozen years, reaching a record $217 million in The campus is home to 12 national institutes and centers and more than 100 other research institutes, where scholars from across the disciplines work together to expand the frontiers of knowledge and contribute to society. UC Santa Barbara also manages seven natural reserves throughout the state, ranging from the nearby Coal Oil Point Reserve, now a nesting site for the endangered snowy plover, to the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, a field research station located in the eastern Sierra Nevada near Mammoth Lakes. Page 2 of 8

Each of these sites provides unique opportunities for research, teaching, and public outreach while serving to preserve California s rich ecological diversity for future generations. Nanotechnology research thrives at UCSB, both at the California NanoSystems Institute, which focuses on developing information, biomedical, and manufacturing technologies, and the NSF-funded Center for Nanotechnology in Society, which studies social and cultural issues concerning nanotechnologies. The Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies, the Chicano Studies Institute, the Center for Black Studies Research, and the Center for New Racial Studies exemplify UC Santa Barbara s strength in interdisciplinary research with a national and global impact. The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, the Carsey-Wolf Center, and the Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion, and Public Life combine scholarly research with public humanities programming for the university and larger community, educating the public and informing public policy debates. In 2007, UC Santa Barbara released a Strategic Academic Plan for , which supports the campus s Long Range Development Plan and identifies areas of growth and progress for the university. The Strategic Academic Plan is based on a core framework which includes balanced commitments and selective investments; building outstanding departments; student, faculty, and staff diversity; and supporting the existing strength in interdisciplinary themes. The Long Range Development Plan projects additional enrollment growth to 25,000. To read more about the Strategic Academic Plan, please visit More information about these and many other campus initiatives can be found on UC Santa Barbara s website at Leadership at UC Santa Barbara Under the leadership of Chancellor Henry T. Yang, UC Santa Barbara has risen to be a top-ranked university with a global presence and reputation as a world-class research institution. In 2013, Leiden University in the Netherlands ranked UC Santa Barbara #2 among the top 500 universities in the world for research productivity and impact. The campus has thrived in every way, including the development of a renowned faculty and greater external support in the form of grants, contracts, sponsored research, and philanthropic giving from foundations and individuals. Dr. Yang was named UC Santa Barbara s fifth Chancellor in He was formerly the Neil A. Armstrong Distinguished Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University, where he also served as the dean of engineering for 10 years. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has received a number of recognitions for his research, teaching, and public service, including seven honorary doctorates and the Benjamin Garver Lamme medal, the highest honor from the American Society of Engineering Education. In 2008 he received the Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has served on scientific advisory boards for the Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, NASA, and National Science Foundation. He currently chairs the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and is a past chair of the Association of American Universities. He also serves on the President s Committee for the National Medal of Science and the Kavli Foundation board, and is chairman of the board for the international Thirty Meter Telescope project. About the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education The history of the GGSE is intimately tied to the history of the UC Santa Barbara campus itself. UC Santa Barbara became a part of the University of California in 1944 after being established in 1909 as the Santa Barbara State Normal School of Manual Arts and Home Economics. The Normal School began training Page 3 of 8

elementary teachers in 1917 and awarded its first Bachelors of Arts Degree in The School of Education was founded as a separate unit in 1961, and became a graduate school in In 2000, Ambassador Don L. and Mrs. Marilyn E. Gevirtz, longtime UC Santa Barbara supporters, made a $10 million commitment to support the excellence and visibility of the Graduate School of Education. To honor their generosity and dedication to promoting research and developing programs in education, the campus designated the School as The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. The School celebrated its Centennial in The School moved into its new, state-of-the-art building in The GGSE offers three graduate degree programs. The Department of Education (M.A., Ph.D.) trains educational scholars in seven research focus areas. The Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology (Ph.D.) is one of a handful of programs in the country to offer combined doctoral preparation in professional psychology for scholars and professionals in the areas of counseling, clinical, and school psychology. The American Psychological Association and the National Association of School Psychologists accredit this program. The Teacher Education Program (M.Ed.) trains elementary and secondary teachers. The GGSE also offers California-approved credentials in special education and school psychology. In addition, the School offers undergraduate minors in education, in applied psychology, and in science and mathematics education. The mission of the GGSE is to conduct research and train professionals in order to promote the healthy development of children, adolescents, and adults both in schools and the larger society. The GGSE affirms a broad, comprehensive view of education rooted in the belief that the key to educational success includes the psycho-social and cognitive development of students, as well as the well-being of the adults, families, and institutions that serve and support them. This view is reflected in the types of programs the School offers and in the research and professional orientations of the School s faculty. The mission of the GGSE is tied directly to the mission of the University of California. On January 19, 2005, the Regents of the University of California adopted a resolution affirming the University s engagement in the preschool through postsecondary education system, as fundamental to the University of California mission as a land grant institution. The resolution goes on to point out that the University s mission is to serve citizens from all segments of society and to promote the academic achievement and success of all students, especially those who are educationally disadvantaged and underrepresented. The faculty of the GGSE has broad disciplinary training and professional interests that include psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, and political science. The faculty holds leadership positions in a number of professional associations including the American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association, and International School Psychology Association. Many faculty members have won awards for research excellence and are principal investigators on research projects funded from federal, state, regional, and private sources. Extramural funding to the School and its associated centers has averaged about $4.5 million for the past five years. Faculty have established centers, clinics, and projects that generate cutting-edge research, offer evidencebased community service and professional development, and provide unique teaching and learning experiences for graduate students. Signature programs in autism, science, mathematics, writing, reading, mental health, trauma, positive psychology, education policy, psychological assessment, and youth development attract significant external funding. The mission of the GGSE is further reflected in the commitment of the School and its faculty to interdisciplinary research and training and to issues of diversity. The broad disciplinary training of the faculty means that graduate students are provided with a comprehensive understanding of individuals and institutions. The GGSE also provides students with rigorous training in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Finally, the GGSE has a long-standing commitment to recruiting and training scholars Page 4 of 8

with an interest in understanding and improving the welfare of all individuals in our increasingly diverse society, including the economically disadvantaged, racial, ethnic, and linguistic minorities, and those with disabilities. Both the faculty and the student body of the GGSE are themselves diverse, with 30 percent of faculty and 33 percent of students being members of racial and ethnic minorities, figures that are higher than the campus and national averages. Role of the Dean As the intellectual leader of the School, the Dean is expected to foster excellence in research, teaching, service, and professional activity. The new Dean must have a distinctive vision and understanding that encompasses the School s three degree programs: the Ph.D. and Master s program in the Department of Education; the Ph.D. program in the Department of Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology; and the Master s program and Teaching Credential program in the Teacher Education Program. S/he must also draw on the current strengths in teacher preparation, STEM research, and the clinical enterprise to foster new strengths and further promote the GGSE s academic excellence. The Dean is the scholarly, administrative, and fiscal leader of the school, and reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor of the university. The Dean is responsible for managing and prioritizing the School s budget, in consultation with School leadership, and for representing the financial needs of the GGSE both within the university and externally. The Dean will also serve as an advocate for UC Santa Barbara at the UC Office of the President while collaborating with peers from other campuses on matters of systemwide significance. The annual budget for the School is $12.5M and the GGSE received over $3M in research funds and grants in FY13. The following positions report to the Dean: Assistant and Associate Deans, Director of Development, Director of Community Relations, Director of STEM Outreach, Director of the Teacher Education Program, Chair of the Department of Education, and Chair of the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology. Key Opportunities and Challenges for the Dean The GGSE has many distinguishing strengths, including a diverse collection of academic programs compared to other UCs, strong partnerships with local schools, a talented and accomplished faculty and a deep commitment to academic excellence. Throughout its history, the GGSE has trained many researchers, teachers and educational leaders to serve the state, the nation and beyond. The overarching challenge for the next Dean will be to harness these strengths and take the GGSE into the next era of excellence. The GGSE is thriving. However, in recent years, the GGSE has been challenged financially to maintain high quality programming while recruiting and retaining top faculty and graduate students due to budget constraints within the UC system. In particular, the Teacher Education Program does not receive institutional funding and must depend on discretionary funds from the school s budget. Therefore, the Dean must leverage the GGSE s programs and research not only to increase the prestige and visibility of the institution, but to achieve a more stable financial model. Through open, respectful management, the Dean will help the GGSE sustain and enhance its academic programs while ensuring sufficient funding to achieve its strategic objectives. To achieve these goals, the Dean will address the following opportunities and challenges: Provide strategic direction to further enhance the academic prominence of the GGSE within UC Santa Barbara, the UC system, and beyond The Dean must creatively guide the School into the changing environment of the future. Upon joining the GGSE community, the Dean will engage members of the GGSE in a broad conversation focused on Page 5 of 8

understanding the current status of the School, shaping a clear vision, and setting priorities to guide the School s future. The Dean will lead the School in a tradition of shared faculty governance and community involvement, and will therefore consult with campus and community bodies representing those constituencies. The Dean will encourage and facilitate faculty, staff, and student discussions about the trajectory of the GGSE, and the role each of them can play in further advancing the reputation and visibility of the School. Through these interactions, the Dean will unite the community around a common purpose, provide open communication around decision-making, and celebrate the work that is being done while highlighting new opportunities for national and international prominence. Create a more sustainable financial model for the future Though institutions within the UC system have seen significant reductions in state funding in recent years, UC Santa Barbara has been able to maintain excellence in teaching and research on a shoestring budget. The Dean must ensure that the GGSE generates sufficient revenues to support graduate students, faculty recruitment, and program improvement. This endeavor will require a combination of skillful hiring; fundraising; increased research productivity; and the understanding of how to leverage allocated university resources. The dean will also need to think creatively around new sources of revenues, such as new partnerships, new programs, inter-disciplinary opportunities, and creative fundraising efforts. Cultivate and expand research to drive academic excellence The GGSE faculty members have many research interests that have contributed to the GGSE s distinguished reputation. Last year, the faculty brought in a combined total of $3.1 million in sponsored research. In addition, faculty made significant contributions in clinics, schools and programs. While extraordinarily valuable, many of these efforts do not generate sufficient funding to support graduate students. The Dean must work with faculty to find new and clever ways to support this important work and to recruit, develop and support excellent, diverse graduate students. One opportunity may come in the form of new faculty hires who can bring in additional research funding to help foster new research distinctions or expand current research strengths. The Dean may also be able to take advantage of UC Santa Barbara s emerging status as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and leverage interdisciplinary collaboration across the university, especially in STEM, by broadening the work done with other colleges and faculty on campus. Position the GGSE as a valued resource for the Santa Barbara community and a model for schools of education nationally and internationally The Dean must be able to articulate and enhance the School s distinctive identity, while continuing its commitment to diversity and its long-standing tradition of interdisciplinary research and instruction. The Dean will serve as a strong advocate for the School, and will work with the faculty, deans of the other colleges and schools, the Executive Vice Chancellor and Chancellor to elevate the stature of the School s departments and programs locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, the Dean must be able to work effectively with deans of the other schools of education within the University of California system, AAU and other national and international education organizations. The Dean must be a compelling spokesperson with other key constituencies including alumni, school districts, businesses, and federal, state and private agencies. The GGSE has longstanding connection with Harding University Partnership School and the Dean will continue to develop and strengthen this partnership while also seeking new partnerships. Through his or her efforts, the Dean will help promote dialogue about issues facing the broader education community and will position the GGSE as a thought leader for research excellence. Page 6 of 8

Recruit, develop, support and retain diverse and engaged faculty, students and staff who will compel the future of the GGSE The new Dean will further strengthen the GGSE community through the hiring and professional development of diverse faculty, staff, and graduate students. In coming years, the GGSE will have a number of faculty positions to fill. Working closely with the department chairs, the Dean will help to ensure success through thoughtful hiring of outstanding, diverse faculty that will build upon the strengths of the GGSE, extend its influence in emerging inter-disciplinary areas, and attract excellent, diverse graduate students. The Dean will encourage and support a collegial atmosphere, transparency and shared governance. In addition, s/he will be responsible for continuing to build the infrastructure required to support faculty research, effective and innovative teaching, and service opportunities for faculty and students. The Dean will also work to strengthen the professional staff, providing opportunities for growth and development. The Dean will clearly demonstrate a personal commitment to equity, community, and inclusiveness, and will publicly encourage an atmosphere that welcomes and celebrates diversity. Qualifications and Characteristics The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement that is appropriate for appointment as a full professor. The Dean will have an earned doctorate in education, applied psychology, or a related field. While no one person will embody them all, the successful candidate will comprise many of the following professional qualifications, skills, experience, and personal qualities: Have a distinguished record of accomplishment in administration, teaching, research, outreach, and professional service. Possess a strong belief and interest in public education, understanding of psychological services, and awareness of the importance of connecting schools, communities, and society. Have a vision for the continued development of the School s excellence and diversity in research, teaching, service, and professional development. Maintain an active, engaged commitment to equity and the fostering of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body that represents California s population. Possess the ability to represent UCSB effectively in the local, state, national, and international dialogue on educational and applied psychological issues. Be a strong advocate and negotiator for School development, as well as have clear ideas about how to prosper in times of limited growth. Facilitate faculty in the development and implementation of vigorous programs of research and grant procurement. Have effective administrative and managerial skills, and expertise with finance and budgeting. Demonstrate leadership and communication skills, including consensus building, negotiation, timely and objective decision-making, and delegation of responsibility and authority. Manifest a collegial work style and demonstrate a commitment to shared academic governance. Be an active, energetic, and well-organized administrator with a high degree of personal and professional integrity. Have a record of contribution to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service. Location Santa Barbara, famous for its natural beauty and intellectual vitality, has a thriving cultural scene enriched by ongoing art exhibitions and music performances at venues that include the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Contemporary Arts Forum, and the Music Academy of the West, as well as the campus s award- Page 7 of 8
