1 UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION PRE-APPLICATION WORKSHEET FOR ENTERING AND TRANSFER UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS To apply for Financial Aid at the University of Virginia, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available at after January 1 st of each year AND the University of Virginia Financial Aid Application available on-line in the Student Center of the Student Information System (SIS). This system is accessible only by the student. Because the Student Information System is only available to the students, we strongly recommend that parents and students complete the following worksheet prior to the student entering their financial aid application on-line. Documents Needed In order to save time while completing your application, you may want to gather the following information for the student applicant, the student s spouse (if student is married), and the student s parent(s)* US income tax returns (1040s and all schedules) 2009 W-2 forms and other records of money earned during the calendar year Records of untaxed income for 2009 Current Bank Statements Current Mortgage Information Current Value of home (if owned) Records of Savings, Stocks, Bonds, Trusts, and other Investments It is best to complete your 2009 Income tax return prior to completing the UFAA. However, if this is not possible, estimate your 2009 income and benefits to the best of your ability using income and tax records from 2008 in addition to salary and benefit records from *If the student s parents are divorced, we will ask for information related to the custodial parent and stepparent if the custodial parent is remarried. The custodial parent is defined as the parent with whom the student lived the most during the last 12 months. If the student did not live with one parent more than the other, then the custodial parent is the parent who provided more financial support in the last 12 months. We will also ask for information related to the student s non-custodial parent, if it is available. When Completing the Financial Aid Application on-line: All fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required fields and must be completed. If a required field is a financial question, but does not apply to you, please enter the number 0 (zero). All monetary amounts entered into the form must be in US Dollars. If the student is married, we will ask for information related to the student s spouse. 1

Once you have completed your on-line application, and clicked on the submit button, you will no longer be able to make changes to your financial information. Therefore, it is very important that you ensure that all information provided is accurate to ensure that we provide you with the best estimate of your financial aid eligibility as possible. 2

7 Use this worksheet to help collect your family s financial information prior to completing the University of Virginia Financial Aid Application on-line. All fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required fields and must be completed before you will be allowed to proceed with your application. If a required field is a financial question, but does not apply to you, enter the number 0 (zero). The following questions are specifically about the applicant. Student Financial Services requires the social security number of prospective or current students who apply for financial aid in order to match the student's data with information from the US Department of Education. Once your UVA address has been established, we will use that as your preferred e- mail.
