2 INTERNAL SESSIONS 1 Venue: Hotel Husa Princesa c/ Princesa 40, Madrid The goal of the 2014 BP Forum on Energy and Sustainability is to analyze the sustainability of the oil refining industry in Europe. This industry is currently facing problems in Europe, due to the conjunction of several elements that are threatening its business model: market developments, industrial policies and also environmental and energy regulations are all compromising the competitiveness of refining in Europe. Market developments include the reduction in the demand for transport fuels in Europe induced in the short term by the economic crisis, and in the long term, by the progressive decarbonisation of the European (and potentially other developed) economies and an increasingly more specialized role of oil in the economy; also the growing competition from new oil refining developments in other continents. Industrial policies also affect the viability of oil refining in Europe. The large dieselization of the European car fleet introduce inefficiencies in European refineries, thus making them less competitive, and also requiring large investments to adapt the refining process to the larger demand of diesel. Finally, climate, energy and environmental policies in Europe may be also creating an uneven playing field with other oil refining industries worldwide. The European carbon trading system, environmental regulations affecting large industrial plants, or the increasing cost of energy in Europe resulting from different energy policies, are examples of such challenges. In this Forum, participants will discuss how these elements may affect the competitiveness, and ultimately, the long-term sustainability of the oil refining industry in Europe. Given the relevance of this industry in an European debate that is increasingly addressing economic competitiveness issues in energy and environmental policies, and also the role that domestic oil refining may play regarding energy security of supply, the objective of the meeting is to analyze the problems and preconditions that may allow a sustainable oil refining industry in Europe. 1 Attendance to the sessions of the Forum is by invitation only. On the morning of Friday June 27 th there will be an academic activity at on the same topic as the Forum and open to the public. The Forum participants that are still in Madrid are welcome to attend to this event, whose program is announced at the end of this prospectus. Program 2 of 5
