Catalog Description: Biology 105 (3) This course will provide an introduction to the basic principles, structures, functions and biological processes of the human body. This lecture only course will emphasize a scientific viewpoint of the workings of the human body and its interac- tions with the environment as well as the necessary practices needed to promote a healthy body. The course s target audience are those students pursuing a liberal arts education who are interested in furthering their own knowledge of human biology. 2. 3 II. Objectives: A. Demonstrate understanding of the inter-connectedness of all living things. B. Describe the salient features distinguishing the different forms of life C. Describe the different tissues found in the human body. D. Describe the manners in which the different organ systems in the human body function together. E. Analyze the effect of environmental conditions on the functioning of human body systems. 4. Attendance, Expectations, Course Assignments, and Grading: A. Attendance & Participation: Classes start on time and all students are expected to arrive on time. It is the student's responsibility to attend class. Attendance will be taken at each class. The instructor reservesthe right to drop any student from the class if the student should miss more than two classes. Ifa student is absent or tardy more than three times, the student will be referred to thecounselor. Realize that non-attendance may impact the final grade at the end of the course. Itis the student's responsibility to drop the class. It is advisable to drop the class than to receive afailing grade at the end of the semester. Three tardies = one absent. Attendance will affect grades. B. Assessment Expectations and Procedures: Professionalism is expected and required from each student. Electronic devices are prohibitedin class - NO PHONES! Turn off all cell phones, no talking or passing notes during lecture unless called upon.each student will have respect for the person sitting next to them. Any questions, comments, orconcerns shall be directed to the instructor. Unprofessional conduct is not acceptable in theclassroom. Pay close attention to the tone, volume, language, and choice of words and how itaffects others while listening to the lecture and taking an examination. Professionalism ismandatory within all career fields. Students may be subject to disciplinary action if students fail to follow the class rules. C. Make Up Policy: There will be no make-up quizzes/tests. Students arriving late on a scheduled quiz/test date will be allowed to take the quiz but will only be allowed the remaining time available. Quizzes can be given at any time during the class; it is your responsibility to attend the whole class period. Assignments that are posted on the web must be turned in when they are due. D. Method of Instruction: Students follow a planned sequence of instruction throughout the course. Instruction is provided through: Lecture, demonstration and practical application. Modeling and one-on-one interaction between student and instructor are utilized during key components of the course. DVD programs and computer applications are made available to students available. Individual, Partners, and small group collaboration is utilized for understanding topics and review of comprehension. Examinations (written, practical, oral) E. Assignments: All class assignments will be given a specific due date. Assignments are due on that day at the beginning of class. No late assignments will be accepted. Any late assignments will earn a zero.
4 F. Grading Policy: The learner will accumulate points for tests, quizzes, class work, and homework. The final course grade will be assigned according to the following percentages of the total points earned: A = Excellent % B = Very Good 80-89% C = Satisfactory 70-79% D = Poor 60-69% F = 59% or less 5. Required Materials and Equipment - These materials are required everyday. 1. Text Book 2. Spiral bound quad ruled notebook. 3. Three - ring binder with dividers. 4. Pens, Pencils, and YELLOW marker. 5. Paper - lined, graph, and plain. 6. Appropriate technology - Computers, calculators, etc. 7. Other materials will be required by instructor. 6. Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Professional Statements A. B. Student Conduct Student conduct is viewed as a serious matter by the faculty members of Hacienda La PuenteUnified School District. Hacienda La Puente Unified School District faculty members assume thatall students will conduct themselves as mature citizens of the campus community and willconduct themselves in a manner congruent with District policies and regulations. Inappropriateconduct is subject to discipline as provided for in the Board Policy BP 5131 Conduct and BP 5144Discipline and Administrative Regulation AR 5131 Conduct and AR 5144 Discipline. Academichonesty is expected of all students in Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, in accordancewith District policy. There are established District reporting procedures if a student is suspectedof committing an academically dishonest act. C. Technology For formal admission to Associates Degree programs at the Hacienda La Puente School District, each student must: Own or have ample access to a computer (ex. In HLPUSD computer labs, or at home or work). Have general knowledge of operation and care of a computer, computer hardware/software, and be able to implement some basic troubleshooting techniques (ex. Check connections, restart the computer, etc.)
5 Have an account. Have a basic understanding of how to use the internet. Students must not use technology as an excuse for not doing their work. Students should anticipate that their use of these skills will be integrated within courses in their programs. Students who fail to meet any of the above expectations are strongly advised to take an introductory computers course before they are formally admitted to the program. Communication with Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Hacienda La Puente Unified School District's "official" means of communicating with students isthrough electronic mail ( ) using students' HLPUSD address. provides an environmentally sensitive, timely, and cost-effective means of communicating District business and academic information. Students are expected to access their HLPUSD account on aregular basis so that official District, college, department and course communications are delivered and received in a timely manner, and students do not miss important communications.
