37 LEATHER NATURAL VEG TAN These leathers have no surface treatment and are suitable for carving or embossing or dying. They are also used for wet-moulding. Because the final nature of the leather is under the control of the leatherworker, they have a wide variety of uses. 0.8/1.0 mm kips are popular for fine moulding and wallet linings. 1¼/1½ kips are used to make purses and bookmarks while falconers use it for hoods and jesses. The rio sides have some scaring or uneven colour which reduces the price. They are ideally suited for cutting smaller components or when a more lived-in look is required such as turnshoes, antiques or re-enactment. The thinner shoulders are used for bag and case making while the thicker grades are the perfect length for sturdy belts. Our Veg-Tan goat is flexible and strong. A very nice leather for wallets and leather goods. DYED-THRU SHOULDERS These are top quality leathers ideal for belt making and heavy cases. They are coloured all the way through and require the minimum of edge finishing. The finish has depth of colour and will show natural markings. LEATHER SPLITS These leathers are made by splitting a hide into two sheets. At first the lower sheet has a rough surface but after spraying with pigment this is rendered smooth again. The 2.6/2.8 mm butt split is a classic material in the belt trade. A butt is roughly 4½ ft by 4½ft and is ideal for sturdy straps. This material is also used for firm cases such as motorcycle panniers tool rolls and knife sheaths. SUEDE SPLITS These suedes are made by splitting a hide into two sheets. At first the lower sheet has a rough surface but after buffing a velvety nap is raised. It normally has a nap on both sides but the tanner pays more attention to one side and this is regarded as the right side. It is a strong material with a wide variety of uses. The lighter weights are used for clothing soft bags and belts. The heavier grades are used for riding chaps and shoes. Being sueded on both sides makes it popular with westerners for tasselled goods. CLOTHING NAPPA This is a smooth clothing leather made from sheepskin. Nappa is highly regarded for its soft pliable touch, making it suitable for skirts and soft jackets. We stock this in black, white, navy, purple, dark olive, ivory, beige, cognac, bourneville and windsor red. CLOTHING COWHIDE This is the strongest clothing leather. The size of the skins leads to greater cutting efficiency and the length enables a pair of trousers to be made without joins at the knee. 0.6/0.8 mm is suitable for fashion garments, 0.9/1.1 mm is used for heavier clothing such as a mans jacket, and 1.2/1.4 is a suitable weight for motorcycle leathers. Leather is sold by the skin NOT in single square feet. Samples are available on request. Suitaility for a 04/12/2019 particular use is the responsibility of the user. 38 LEATHER CLOTHING SUEDE Pigskin suede comes in larger pieces than sheep nappa and has a wonderful drape. It is suitable for all fashion garments. METALIC LEATHER This is made by a process which bonds metal foil to a pigskin base. It is a suitable weight for clothing but it is a luxury material not guaranteed to be dry cleanable and not machine washable. It is stocked in the following colours Gold, Silver, Old Gold, Old Silver, Turquoise and Fuchsia. UPHOLSTERY HIDES These are specially chosen from large hides to give good cutting. They are available to order in an extensive range of colours and finishes. Although Italian in origin, large stocks are held in this country and an individual order is normally available in a few days. Scandinavian hides are available from stock. SCANDINAVIAN This leather is made by a top quality Scandinavian tannery. When they have an order, they always make more than is required and only sell the best. We buy the overrun at a considerable discount hence the price. The leather has some blemishes but the quality and texture are second to none. SADDLERY LEATHER Traditionally made bridle leather stuffed with oils and heavily waxed. A pair of butts is made by cutting a long wholebutt in half to result in two pieces aprox. 66 by 24 each. Although traditionally priced per pair, they are also sold singly and referred to as a half a pair. GOATSKIN Sometimes called kid or morocco this is a leather famed for its strength and durability. It is popular with bookbinders and makers of small goods such as wallets. It s close grain means it can be cut very thin and still retain its strength. It is also occasionally used for chair seats. Code 103 is a new line. It is slightly grainy and antiqued. We are very pleased with our first delivery in green and will be adding more colours in due course. The colours will be repeatable. 44 CUSTOM MADE EMBOSSING PLATES Embossing plates can be made from your own artwork. They are made from 6 mm thick Magnesium alloy sheet etched to your own design. The plate can be any size - within reason. They are intended for use with a small press. It is however possible to use them in more ingenious ways such as a vice or even a sturdy 'G' cramp. Small ones can be glued to blocks of metal and used with a hammer. To create a good plate 1) Use only clear black on white for your artwork. Grey scale or shading will confuse the process. Anything black is raised on the plate and therefore embossed into the leather. 2) Cheaper inkjet printers can produce a zigzag line instead of a smooth curve. This will result in a less crisp plate. Better quality inkjet printers are okay and laser printers are best. 3) Do not draw any lines or borders round your artwork unless you want the line to come out on the plate. 4) Draw your image the way you want it to read. The etcher will worry about reversing. 5) If you are putting several designs on one plate please leave at least 5 mm between the images to avoid damage when cutting them out. 6) Send your artwork in a PDF format by or on paper by Royal Mail. Do not send by fax as the print quality is not good enough for artwork. What you will receive. A sturdy magnesium alloy plate etched with your design ready for use. Delivery time The process is fairly fast. After we have agreed the final artwork and payment has been received it only takes a few days to make the plate and we will send it to you by 1st class mail or Airmail.
