your role as a father Whether you are a first time dad, a dad-to-be, a separated dad or a young dad, fatherhood is a big job and will bring about huge changes in your life. Children with close fatherly relationships are more likely to lead better lives so your role is really important! Studies have shown that where fathers are closely involved in a child s upbringing, there is a much smaller chance of the youngster getting into crime, drugs, truancy, poor health and bad life choices. Most dads would agree that simply being there and spending time with your child is one of the best ways to build close relationships - the list below offers some simple ideas on how to develop that close bond Chill out - plan some time simply to hang out with the family and forget work Be a role model - do not do anything that you wouldn t want your child to do Be creative - encourage imagination through reading, drawing or painting together Show affection - tell your child you love them, and give plenty of hugs and kisses Be silly - don t take yourself too seriously and have fun around your child Respect the mother - try not to disagree or argue in front of the child Show support - watch your child s sports matches and attend school concerts Source: If you live together as a family, it s good to do things all together but also to spend one-to-one time with your child. Great ways of doing this include reading a bedtime story, singing songs and enjoying bath-time together. Getting into a routine of these types of activities will help your child feel secure and loved. Issues Affecting Separated Fathers If your marriage or relationship with the mother of your child has broken down, there are many important things to think about. No matter what happens between yourself and your former partner, the priority has to lie with your child and doing whatever is best for them. In the eyes of the law, children are entitled to the love and attention of both parents so the separation does not mean the relationship with your child should suffer. For dads going through a separation, it is important for them to have an understanding of what rights they have, what legal procedures they may have to engage in and who they can turn to for help and support. Headland Future in Hartlepool runs a dedicated group for dads going through or considering separation. It works on a referral system but also welcomes men to drop in without prior appointment. The sessions cover issues such as gaining contact, the child s education, financial strains and the impact of new partners. They also look at the implications of moving house, lifestyle choices and the potential affect of turning to alcohol or drugs. FURTHER INFORMATION Headland Future can be contacted on Antenatal Involvement A great way for fathers to become a significant part of their child s life is to get involved before the baby is even born. Hartlepool s Children s Centres and other local support agencies can guide you through this sometimes daunting time, offering valuable help along the way. The more you are able to support the mother through pregnancy, the more you will feel part of the process and prepared for fatherhood once the baby arrives. Ensure you re part of the prebirth activities, including scans, health checks, midwife visits and shared antenatal classes. Hartlepool offers some of the best support to fathers in the region including antenatal groups for dads-to-be, helping you to focus on your role and to meet with other men in the same situation. It is usual to feel left out - all the attention is on the mother and her bump, with little thought given into how dad may be feeling. Make a point of talking openly with her, learn how she is feeling and understand the changes she is going through. The more involved you can be in this way, the less you will feel left out from what is happening. Headland Future runs two antenatal groups for fathers, Young Dads and NDC Dads. The first offers one-to-one support and advice on parenting issues for any dad-to-be under the age of 25, covering topics such as childbirth and baby care as well as confidence and self-esteem. The second group, NDC Dads, is a support service for new or expectant dads aged 25+ who live in the Hartlepool New Deal for Communities area. Make the most of this very unique experience, as you may only have one or two chances of becoming a father in your lifetime and it is likely to be the most important job you will ever have to do. 6 fit for fatherhood Being a healthy dad means that you will have the strength and energy to play with your children, and ensure you re around to see them grow into strong adults themselves. What s more, leading an active lifestyle sets a good example to young ones, encouraging them to get involved in sport and exercise as they grow up. The best way to lose fat is to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Research has shown that the fastest way to burn off excess fat is a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise. Try the following exercises which are great for the abs, courtesy of Hartlepool Council s Sports Development Team. They should be completed alongside regular cardio-vascular work. SIT- UPS SIT-UPS Start on your back, feet on the floor, knees bent. Place your fingers to the side of your head, elbows out to the side. Your hands will thus support the weight of your head, not pull you up. Look straight ahead, keeping your chin off your chest. This will help to keep your neck in a relaxed, neutral position. Inhale, and slowly lift your shoulders, neck and head. Your elbows should stay out to the side, your neck relaxed. Your lower back should stay in contact with the floor throughout the movement. With your abs contracted, lift until you are about 30 degrees off the floor, hold for a second, then exhale and slowly return to the starting position. Pause once more, then repeat. The key to this exercise is smooth, slow movements, feeling the contraction in your abs the whole time. Source: CRUNCHES Lie down flat on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Hold your hands wherever you feel comfortable (on your chest or beside your head, just be sure you don't pull on your head). The typical crunch is taught by instructing you to simply roll your upper torso forward. This is fine to start with. To increase the effectiveness of the crunch movement, push your chest and head up towards the ceiling pushing your lower back flat onto the floor. Your anatomy will automatically cause you to follow a crunching pattern. Hold at the top of the movement for a second and squeeze hard. Source: CRUNCHES 6

THE PLANK Lie face down on mat resting on the forearms, palms flat on the floor. Push off the floor, raising up onto toes and resting on the elbows. Keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels. Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent your rear end from sticking up in the air. Hold for 20 to 60 seconds, lower and repeat for 3-5 reps. Source: THE PLANK PUSH-UPS Lie chest-down with your hands at shoulder level, straighten your arms as you push your body up off the floor and put feet together parallel. Keep your legs straight and your toes tucked under your feet. Lower your body slowly towards the floor. Bend your arms and keep your palms in fixed position, try to avoid arching your back or lifting your bottom in the air. Exhale when your arms become straight. Pause for a moment. Keep body straight and feet together. Source: PUSH-UPS Fighting Fit! For an alternative way to keep fit, why not try Boxercise - a non-contact boxing based workout. Our fully trained instructor also runs Aikido classes, a form of Japanese martial art, as well as offering private sports massage and personal training. See below for class times. Boxercise: How Many? For sit-ups, crunches and push-ups, beginners should aim for two sets of 8-12 reps, intermediates two sets of reps, advanced three sets of 20+ reps. Rest for 20 seconds between sets. Abdominal Muscles Need Recovery Remember that like any other muscles, the abdominals require adequate rest to ensure that the muscles recover after exercise. Mondays 7.30pm-8.30pm Lynnfield Community Centre Tuesdays 7pm-8pm at Brierton Sports Centre Wednesdays 7pm-8pm at Stranton Centre Saturdays (time TBA) at Belle Vue Sports Centre Sundays 4pm-5pm at Headland Sports Hall Aikido: Saturdays 10am-11am and 11am-12pm at Brierton Sports Centre For all enquiries, you can call the instructor, Dave Facchini on

Ready, Steady READ! Perhaps one of the most recommended activities to enjoy with your child is sharing a book together. Not only does it help them learn to read when the time comes, but it also brings lots of other benefits in their development and in the relationship you share. HDM paid a visit to Hartlepool s Central Library, where Heather Bellwood, Children & Young Persons Officer and Vicky Totty, Early Years Literacy Outreach Worker were on hand to give us some great reading advice for dads Why not try... Take a look at our recommended books for this issue. That s Not My Teddy by Fiona Watt and Rachel Wells From the Usborne Touchy-Feely series, this wonderful book is really bright and colourful with textured fabric to touch. It is not too long and is a favourite among many children. Ideal for 0-18 months. The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler A really popular and well-known children s book, this is a good choice if you re not sure what to try for your young child. A great book for dads too, with the chance to use lots of deep voices and enjoy together. Ideal for 3-5 years. Reading Activities Read & Rhyme fun reading and stories sessions for the under 5's, held in libraries across Hartlepool. Rhyme Time a stories and rhymes group, again for the under 5 s, held at one of your local Children s Centres. Book Start a nationwide scheme which provides every child aged 5 and under with a free book pack. The earlier you can start reading with your child the better, even as a baby, as it encourages the early development of their communication skills and familiarises them with the sound of your voice. Nursery rhymes are great to read to babies, as they are lively and engaging, and can be learnt as the child grows. Reading to a child helps their development on so many levels, in an educational way, as well as building life skills, confidence and imagination. It also sets a great example to them that reading is fun and that grown-ups like it too. For dads, reading is a fantastic opportunity for some special oneto-one time with their child, especially if they are struggling to find a way to develop that close bond. If it s something you haven t tried before, you really are missing out and should give it a go! Dad should choose a book that he will enjoy too, as he can get truly into the book, enjoying using expressions and different voices to really tell the story. If his reading skills are not too strong, there are plenty of picture-based books that are ideal, and it can be just as much fun making up your own story as you go along. The choice of books out there is amazing - there are pop-ups, board books, touchy-feely ones, noisy books, interactive books and bath books - these help improve all abilities and senses, because words coupled with other sensations help the learning process and the development of important language and social skills. READING FACTS! Experts suggest that if a child knows 8 nursery rhymes before they reach 4 years old, that they will be a confident reader by the time they are 8 years old. Research shows that a child should experience 1500 books before they actually start learning to read. 9

Fatherly Figures Whether you re a model or a mechanic, a soap-star or a salesman, most dads would agree that fatherhood is no easy task. In the first of our Fatherly Figures series, we speak to Hartlepool United star Ritchie Humphreys who shares his experiences of becoming a first-time dad. Hartlepool United favourite Ritchie Humphreys has been a familiar face at Victoria Park for nine years now, and as club captain is seen by many as a great ambassador for Pools and role model for younger players. At 32 years old, the versatile midfielder has faced many triumphs and challenges in his career, but how does the birth of his first child compare? Fatherhood is a bit of a shock to the system to begin with, he says, You need to be so aware of the baby s needs all of the time and put that before anything else. It can be really hard for dads to feel involved especially if mum is breastfeeding, but I ve made it my job to support my wife, help around the house and do the washing and shopping. Little Eliza Rose Humphreys was born in September 2009 in Ritchie s hometown of Sheffield and he remembers the first time he and his wife took her back to their family home in Durham. It was all very strange at first, and took a lot of getting used to. Like for most new dads, it can be difficult to juggle work with family life, especially with the abnormal sleeping patterns and dealing with tiredness. 10 Additionally as a footballer, the frequent travelling means that I can t always be at home when I want or need to be, so that can be hard. But saying that, I sometimes come home after a hard and tiring day at work, and just a little smile or giggle from Eliza makes all the difference - it s the best feeling in the world. On my days off, we like to spend time together as a family, going for walks and taking the dog out but it s also nice to have some special one-to-one time with Eliza. Bathtimes can be really lovely, it s something that I can take responsibility for and also gives mum a chance to have a bit of a break. My advice for dads-to-be would be to find your own way of doing things, because in many cases there is no right or wrong and you will learn yourself as you go along. There are so many things you can read about or be advised upon, but each baby is different and in time you will find that fatherhood comes naturally. I have now become really comfortable with it all and enjoy every new day as a dad. Married for nearly two years now, Ritchie and his wife have found that many of their friends too are starting families, allowing them to share experiences and ask for advice whenever they need it. They envisage expanding the family one day, with a little brother or sister for Eliza, although not in the very immediate future Ritchie is quick to point out! Reflecting upon his role as a father, Ritchie says: Being a dad can be really demanding, especially if you ve had a long day or the baby gets poorly, but at the same time it is so fulfilling and uplifting. I m still finding my way as a dad, you really do learn something new every day and you just need to take things one step at a time. As a footballer, I ve had a lot of high points in my life, but without a doubt this has been the best thing ever to happen to me. 12 Mind over matter Experts say that a father s mental and emotional well-being is crucial in the development of their young child, and some conditions are much more common than you may think. Mental health doesn t have to be about losing the plot or going insane, it simply relates to your state of well-being, the ability to undertake everyday activities and coping with the normal stresses of life. Any father knows that the normal stresses of life can be hugely increased with the arrival of a baby, so it is no surprise that many suffer from anxiety, depression and addictions. If you think you may be experiencing some of these problems, help is at hand. Hartlepool MIND offers friendly counselling services and support for all types of mental health conditions and related family issues, and runs sessions on the Ready 4 Baby courses in partnership with PATCH. Graham McGregor, therapist at Hartlepool MIND, says: A father s mental state, as well as the environment the baby is brought up in, can directly affect the development of the child s brain, behaviour and emotions. There are four therapists here myself, Julian and Roger, along with therapy coordinator Val Jackson and we are all here to provide support to families and their particular condition or situation. In addition, Hartlepool s Children s Centres run a series of Bump to Baby sessions, which are fantastic for mothers and fathers. Further Information Call Hartlepool MIND on , or visit Find your local Children s Centre by calling STRESS BUSTER! Whether you re having the week from hell at work, or the kids are running you ragged, take a moment to yourself and follow our stress-busting tips On the job there s no need to be a super hero! If you re bogged down at work, speak out and ask for help see it as good teamwork! At home having a big clear out is a super way to destress. Pack up all those old clothes, disused toys and general rubbish and make a fresh start. Time for dad take some time out to do something for yourself. It may be a drink with the lads or a blast at the gym, anything that allows you to relax your mind and become human again. Feed your mind it may surprise you to hear that certain foods can help you to de-stress. Eggs are full of stress relieving nutrients, carbs in pasta, bread and potatoes release feel good chemicals in your brain and keeping well hydrated with water also prevents tension. Pressure points drop that manly act for a moment and surrender to a relaxing massage. Ask the missus to do it and score brownie points on the romance chart! Well rested a good night s sleep is great for destressing, but ever found the tenser you are, the harder it is to nod off? Write down any worries before bed to get them off your mind, don t eat or drink too late and try a warm bath you ll feel those eyelids getting heavy in no time at all. 12

Breast Foot Forward There are loads of reasons why breastfeeding is great for your baby. But where does that leave you, and how can you make sure you develop that close fatherly bond? Firstly, it is important to understand the benefits of breastfeeding: It is the most natural food and contains the perfect level of nutrients for your baby It is free! It reduces the risk of baby developing conditions such as eczema, diabetes, constipation and infections It reduces the risk of obesity and fussy eating later in the child s life It reduces the risk of mum developing breast or ovarian cancer It can burn up to 500 calories per day, helping mum return to her pre-pregnancy weight However, dads can often feel left out of this special bonding process if mum is taking care of all the feeding. But fathers can bond with the baby in many other ways: Being responsible for bathtime, nappy changing or bedtime Learning to massage your baby, helping to relax and get to know your baby. Wear baby in a sling to go shopping or for a walk Bringing baby to mum ready for a feed Help feed expressed milk once the baby is a little older If you try to play as equal a role as possible in your baby s early days, it will lay good foundations for a strong fatherly bond throughout childhood and beyond. FURTHER INFORMATION Hartlepool s Children s Centres run a range of breastfeeding support groups - contact the Families Information Service Hartlepool (FISH) on for details. Got the Bottle? Read our helpful guide below to prepare the perfect formula milk for baby. Preparation Wash and dry your hands, ensure that the surface you re working on is clean and all equipment has been sterilised. Boil fresh water and then let it cool for no longer than half an hour. Making the Feed Follow the instructions on the back of the tin for how much water and powder to use. Add the water first and check the measurement to ensure that you are adding the correct amount. Use the scoop provided to add the correct amount of powder to the bottle. Ensure that the scoop is full and then level it off with a clean knife. Put on the top of the bottle and shake thoroughly until the powder is dissolved. Storage Any formula milk that has not been used should be thrown away, as bacteria can grow on the milk which could make your baby ill. If you are going out for the day, make up a flask of hot water and take the powder pre-measured in a clean, air-tight container. 13

Expert Examination In this feature, we meet a fathers specialist based in Hartlepool, and find out how their expertise helps dads across town. This issue, we speak to Danny Cobain of Headland Future. Danny Cobain is the Lead Families Worker at Headland Future, and manages all the dads services, as well as running some of the activities himself. He designs the courses for the dads groups and ensures they give the very best guidance and learning. Having worked in this job since July 2009, Danny used to be a Families Support Assistant for Social Services and before that he worked for Middlesbrough s Children s Centres. Through this work he gained a wide range of social, community and family-based skills that enable him to carry out his current role in a skilled and professional way. Danny actually began his career as a community football coach for MiddlesbroughFC, which is a common route into family support work. He explains: There are no particular qualifications for fathers work, so a sporting, youth or social work backgroundisoftenthestarting point for this type of job. I got a real taste of working with families through my coaching work and realised that I got on well with kids and was a good role model to them. Looking for a new career challenge, I found that social and community work was a good side step from coaching and it presented lots of new opportunities. Danny lives in Middlesbrough with his wife and two young children, allowing him to practice some of his own parenting advice. I love to spend time with the kids, he says, both together as a family and on an individual basis. We do all sorts of things including reading, cooking and bathtimes and I always make a point of seeing them when I get home on an evening. Childhood is extremely precious and it is important for dads to be a big part of that. Danny has gained a great sense of reward and pride from his work at Headland Future, and his role has gradually developed as the organisation has grown. His work varies from modelmaking to report-writing and sports activities to data analysis. Looking to the future, he plans to continue developing services for dads right across the North East region. 19 Agony Uncle As the father of a baby or young child, it is only natural to have questions or worries about what is best for your little one. In this feature, our resident Agony Uncle, Danny Cobain, and his team of experts answer your parenting questions. Question I am the father of a small baby and always worry about changing her clothes. She seems so fragile and I m scared of breaking her arms or bending her the wrong way. Any advice? Phil, 21 Answer This is a really common worry, especially for fathers. Lay your baby on a changing mat rather than trying to juggle everything, which will allow you to use both hands to change her clothes. If you re dressing her in an allin-one, lay the clothing open on the mat first, then lay the baby on top - this will allow you to slip the baby s limbs in easily. Try to be relaxed and avoid bending arms back-over. If you feel you need any further support, don t be afraid to ask your midwife or health visitor. Alternatively, contact Headland Future on Question My child often asks me to help with his homework, especially Maths. But he doesn t seem to cover the same things that I did at school and everything is taught in a different way these days. What should I do? Steven, 32 Answer The internet is a great resource for homework assistance if you are able to access it, and there are some good educational websites. Try which offers lots of easy-to-use learning resources, particularly on literacy and numeracy, as well as handy tips for parents. However if your child is continually finding homework a struggle, it would be a good idea to contact the school and speak with his teacher. Question I am a full-time working Dad and feel as though I hardly see my children. What activities can you suggest to make the most of the time we do have together? Andy, 29 Answer Eating together in the evening is a good way for families to spend time with one another. Also, try to get involved in your children s bedtime routine by reading a story before they settle down. See the information on page 8 for some great ideas of where you can take your children for a fun day out. And don t forget Headland Future (tel ) and Hartlepool s Children s Centres (tel ) run all kinds of activities for dads and their children to enjoy together. If you would like to put your question to Danny, simply post it to Danny Cobain, Headland Future, 3 Abbey Street, Hartlepool TS24 OJR or it to d.cobain.hfuture@btconnect.com Remember that no question is too silly - if you re worried about it, there are bound to be other dads across Hartlepool who are too! 19
