! The Williamsport Area School District Virtual Academy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Williamsport Area School District Virtual Academy offers students the opportunity to advance their education in a rigorous and relevant online learning environment. The academy is designed to provide students with the flexibility they need while maintaining checkpoints to ensure they are accountable for their daily activity. Students receive a Cyber School in a Box bundle, which includes a laptop computer, printer/scanner, all of the necessary peripherals and access to both live teacher support and technical support. Advantages to Our Virtual Academy The student will progress toward a Williamsport Area School District diploma. All equipment, textbooks, and materials must be returned. Academic Achievement & Requirements A student must maintain an appropriate level of achievement in the virtual academy. o To succeed in the virtual academy, a student should plan to spend one to two hours a day on each course (Monday through Friday). o A student should have a quiet place to complete school work that is free from the potential distractions in the home.! A student is always welcome in the drop-in center (E207) To ensure that the appropriate faculty is available, please contact Mrs. Pardoe, Mrs. Miller, or Mr. Emery prior to arriving at the high school.! The drop-in center will maintain an academic environment at all times. o If a student falls below 75% in any course, he/she is required to attend consecutive school days in E207 to receive additional tutoring and academic support. o To attend a remediation day or receive tutoring, a student may utilize district transportation by riding an assigned WAHS school bus.! Breakfast and lunch are available for purchase in Red Cafeteria. Updated: July 29,
! o If a student refuses to attend the assigned days in E207 or if he/she refuses to make an appropriate effort to raise the low grade(s), he/she may be dismissed from the virtual academy and returned to his/her assigned school. o A student must follow the academic calendar of the Williamsport Area School District. All deadlines for progress reports and report cards will be followed. Student work must meet these deadlines.! A 2015/2016 calendar is included at the end of this handbook. o A student is required to take all state mandated exams (PSSA/Keystone) at the appropriate district school. Curriculum for the Virtual Academy The curriculum used in Williamsport Area School District Virtual Academy equips students with a fundamental knowledge base. The course framework utilizes Williamsport Area School District curricula and textbooks. The courses have a consistent structure and are designed to provide students with engaging content, assignments, and assessments. Weekly lesson modules include reading assignments supported by short answer assessments, essay questions, quizzes, and traditional homework assignments. Courses are supplemented with a wealth of web-based resources, including: videos, interactive animations, supplemental materials from textbook publishers, and a wide range of other engaging educational media. Mastering the Content in the Virtual Academy A variety of activities and assessments are vital to a student s success. While multiplechoice assessments are an important part of any assessment structure, a student is required to further demonstrate mastery with the following exercises: E-Assignment E-Short Answer E-Essay E-Project Questions/problems designed to provide students with practice of key concepts. A worksheet that requires the students to handwrite their responses to strengthen the learning process. A topical essay question intended to assess a students understanding of the overall concept outlined in the reading assignment and to gauge a students writing skills. Long-term assignments interspersed throughout a course to give the students the opportunity to build on multiple units. Updated: July 29,
! A student is required to show their work on all math coursework so VLN teachers can verify their understanding of the material. If academic dishonesty is confirmed, disciplinary action will occur based on the severity and circumstances of the act. Removal from the virtual academy is a possible outcome. The virtual academy coordinator may require that summative exams are completed in the drop-in center. Technological Platform for the Virtual Academy A student is provided with a unique username and password, which grants him/her access to a portal. This portal includes a calendar to keep the student on track to finish the coursework by the established deadline. The portal offers a student a single sign-on access to the coursework, to the content libraries, and to the tools that are needed for success. Help Desk Specialists are available from 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week to provide any necessary assistance. o Students may grant the Help Desk Specialists permission to resolve software issues remotely. Hardware issues may entail a Cyber School in a Box bundle swap at Williamsport Area High School to minimize downtime. If a significant delay occurs during a hardware issue, the student may be required to attend the drop-in center in E207 to sustain their education. Special Education in the Virtual Academy A student who has an individualized education plan (IEP) will have additional supports in place in accordance with the accommodations identified in his/her plan. Special education professionals within the district will assist with the transition to the virtual academy. Updated: July 29,
! Attendance Policies & Procedures for the Virtual Academy Students in the virtual academy follow the Williamsport Area School District attendance policy. Students must sign into the online homeroom session each day the district is in session. o Students must actively participate in the homeroom session. Attendance will be taken daily by the online homeroom teacher. The parent/guardian must provide a written excuse to the homeroom teacher for every absence. Special exemptions are provided for students with attendance challenges such as illness, work, sports practices, and other considerations. o To receive an exemption, the circumstances must be communicated and approved in advance. o Please direct initial requests for special exemptions to the virtual academy coordinator.! The circumstances of the request may require administrative approval. Illegal absences will be regarded as truancy and the district policies and practices will be applied. Communication There are a variety of communication tools and techniques that are utilized in the virtual academy. Students are required to meet with their homeroom teacher in the virtual classroom each day to help them remain on track and to assist them in the completion of their coursework. Homeroom also provides for district announcements to be conveyed so that students and parents/guardians are aware of events and important information within the district. Homeroom teachers meet with the student individually to review his/her progress, address any areas of improvement, and identify artifacts that the student may consider including in a portfolio. In addition to homeroom, students have the opportunity to meet with their core content-area teachers in the virtual classroom. Updated: July 29,
! o A student may either stop by the virtual classroom during the open Office Hours sessions that are held Monday through Friday or schedule an appointment with a specific teacher ahead of time. o These sessions enable students to ask specific questions about their coursework and receive one-on-one assistance. Our teachers use the webcam, microphone, and whiteboard to make the classroom come alive and deliver the same type of experience as if the teacher and student were face-to-face. A student will have additional support through the virtual academy coordinator and the drop-in center in E207. o In-person tutoring is available every school day with our district subject area teachers. A student will need to coordinate with Mrs. Pardoe to ensure the appropriate faculty is available. Grading Grading and formative feedback are provided by the virtual academy s highly-qualified, Pennsylvania-certified teachers. While some grading is done automatically within the learning management system, there are a variety of assignments and assessments that students are required to complete each week. o Our teachers provide constructive feedback within 72 hours of submission. o The student and their parents/guardians have access to the online gradebook to view the overall grade in a course as well as the score on the individual assignments. In addition, a student and his/her parents/guardians may download the graded artifacts to review the teacher s feedback. Graduation Requirements High school students in the virtual academy are held to the same graduation requirements to receive a diploma.
