3 Rear Admiral Bruce L. Gillingham Medical Corps, United States Navy Commander, Navy Medicine West/Naval Medical Center San Diego Rear Admiral Bruce L. Gillingham, a native of San Diego, CA, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in cultural anthropology with high honors from University of California at San Diego and his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. Rear Adm. Gillingham completed a surgical internship at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD). He is qualified as an Undersea and Diving Medical Officer. He completed his orthopedic residency at NMCSD in 1994 and subspecialty training as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada in August Rear Adm. Gillingham served at Naval Hospital Roosevelt Roads; Naval Special Warfare Unit 4; NMCSD as Director of Surgery; Naval Medical Center Portsmouth as Deputy Commander; Commander, Naval Hospital Jacksonville; US Pacific Command as Fleet Surgeon and Joint Support Force-Japan Surgeon; and US Fleet Forces Command as Fleet Surgeon and Director, Health Services. He deployed to Taqaddum, Iraq during OIF II. Gillingham s military decorations include the Legion of Merit (five awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal with the Eagle Globe and Anchor device with bronze star, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Fleet Marine Force ribbon. A Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Gillingham is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Orthopedic Association. 4 Captain Scott L. Johnston Medical Service Corps, United States Navy Naval Center, Combat & Operational Stress Control Captain Scott L. Johnston is a native Californian and received his bachelor s degree from the University of California at Davis and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Pacific Graduate School in Palo Alto. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric psychology at Harvard Medical School. He has been a licensed clinical psychologist since 1995 and is board certified in both forensic and clinical psychology. Capt. Johnston was commissioned in During his career he has served at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), Naval Hospital Yokosuka Japan, Marine Barracks Washington, Presidential Helicopter Squadron One, and Naval Health Clinic Hawaii. He deployed with the USS Constellation Expeditionary Strike Group to the Persian Gulf; 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit; Charlie Surgical Company to Fallujah, Iraq; 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment to Ramadi, Iraq; 3rd Marine Regiment to Haditha, Iraq; and Joint Task Force, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He is currently stationed at NMCSD, where he serves as the director for the Naval Center for Combat & Operational Stress Control. He also serves as the specialty leader for Navy Clinical Psychology. Academically, Capt. Johnston has published and lectured around the world on treatment of combat-related PTSD, building resilience in Marines and Sailors, and transitional interventions for returning warriors. He is currently investigating virtual reality treatments for PTSD, stress injuries in detention operations and use of meditation in substance-abuse treatment. Capt. Johnston s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal (Fleet Marine Force), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (Fleet Marine Force) and various service and unit awards. 5 Commander Jeremy J. Hawker Nurse Corps, United States Navy Surface Warfare Medical Institute Commander Jeremy J. Hawker was born in Mankato, Minnesota and raised in Cherry Point, North Carolina. Following his father s retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps, Cmdr. Hawker returned to Minnesota to attend Minnesota State University in Mankato where he received his Bachelors of Science in Nursing in Following graduation Cmdr. Hawker accepted a commission in the United States Navy Nurse Corps and attended Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island. His first assignment was Naval Medical Center Portsmouth where he was assigned to the Internal Medicine Ward and later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit where he spent majority of his tour. Following Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Cmdr. Hawker transferred to Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan where he continued as an ICU nurse before being accepted to Perioperative Nursing School at Camp Pendleton, California. Upon completing perioperative nursing training, he received orders to National Naval Medical Center Bethesda, MD where he was Division Officer for Neurosurgery and deployed twice on the USNS Comfort (TAH-20) in support of a RESCUER/MEDCEUR 02 and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was then selected as the Ship s Nurse for the USS Eisenhower (CVN-69) out of Norfolk, VA where he earned his Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification and assisted in IKE completing Crew Certification following its mid-life refueling and overhaul. Following IKE, Cmdr. Hawker was selected for Duty Under Instruction at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he graduated with honors in 2008 with a Masters of Science in Nursing as a Perioperative Clinical Nurse Specialist and completed his research in Acinetobacter baumannii in Traumatic War Wounds. After graduation, Cmdr. 6 Lieutenant Commander Terri K. Osner Medical Service Corps, United States Navy Navy Medicine Training Support Center, Navy Enlisted Training Element Detachment Lieutenant Commander Terri K. Osner was born in Amarillo, TX and graduated from Denbigh High School in Newport News, VA in She enlisted in the United States Navy and entered active duty in December Recruit Osner s career began at boot camp in Orlando, FL. After graduation, she attended Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, IL, she then transferred to Pensacola, FL for both Aviation Medicine Technician School and Aviation Physiology and Water Survival School. In November 1993 she reported to her first duty station at the Aviation Physiology Training Unit in Cherry Point, NC as an Aviation Physiology and Water Survival Instructor. In 1998 she completed her last tour of duty in the aviation community at the Aviation Survival Training Center in Norfolk, VA. During her assignment in Norfolk, Osner was selected for the Enlisted Educational Advancement Program (EEAP) and completed a Business Administration with a specialization in Health Care Management degree in August 2000 from Saint Leo University. In late 2000, she was selected for the Medical Service Corps In-Service Procurement Program. She was commissioned as an Ensign in the Medical Service Corps in January 2001, and subsequently attended Officer Indoctrination School, Newport, RI. As a Naval Officer, her first tour was at the Naval Health Research Center in San Antonio, TX as the Department Head of Administration. During this tour she was accepted into the Duty Under Instruction Program (DUINS) and obtained her Master s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Texas State University in August Her follow-on tour in 2006 was at Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, RI as both a Class Officer and instructor. In 2008, she reported to Naval Hospital Beaufort in South Carolina as the Department Head for Materials Management. continued on next page NMTSC Mission We provide support to the Fleet and Navy Medicine by serving as homeport for health care professionals associated with the San Antonio medical training pipelines. NMTSC Vision To be the Command of Choice serving as the model for Tri-Service medical training support while fostering Navy heritage, culture, and tradition. She attended the Financial Materials Management Training Course (FMMTC) in Bethesda, MD in 2009, successfully completing the Certified Defense Financial Management (CDFM) designation. During this tour, she deployed in January 2001 as an Individual Augmentee to EMF-Kuwait. She was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in October 2011 while deployed as the Department Head of S-4. In July 2012, Osner was selected as the Director, Navy Medicine Training Support Center, Navy Enlisted Training Element Detachment, San Diego, CA. Lt. Cmdr. Osner s personal awards include: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), Army Achievement Medal.
