Objectives Identify three ways patients are able to utilize insulin

Inject

A syringe is a device with a hollow center, plunger, needle and removable needle guard. Outside is marked with lines.

Syringe Shorter needles mean less injection discomfort Coordinate syringe size to match insulin dose: 1cc, 1/2cc, 3/10 cc Do not re-use or share Dispose of used syringes in a sealable and puncture-resistant container

Insulin Pen Resembles a large pen. It replaces the vial and syringe, assist people with poor eyesight, and helps avoid over-or underdosing. Prefilled or cartridges Needles screw into place Do not require refrigeration after the first use

Insulin Pen: Disposable

Insulin Pen: Cartridge based

Insulin Pen Avoid prolonged exposure to cold or heat keep room temperature after first use Never carry with the needle attached Do not re-use or share needles Dispose of pen needles in sealable and puncture resistant container

Insulin delivery device: Vgo

Vgo Insulin delivery device

Vgo Helps control blood glucose with simple basal-bolus insulin delivery The V-Go delivers insulin at a continuous preset basal rate and on-demand bolus dosing for adults with Type 2 diabetes requiring insulin. The V-Go devices are available in a preset basal rate to deliver 20, 30, or 40 Units of insulin in one 24-hour period (0.83 U/hr, 1.25 U/hr or 1.67 U/hr, respectively) and on-demand bolus dosing in 2 Unit increments (up to 36 Units per 24-hour time period). The V-Go offers a simple way to deliver basal-bolus insulin therapy.

Insulin Pump Computerized/motorized and flexible use devices Durable vs disposable Filled with rapid or short-acting insulin. Insulin is dosed before each meal A basal rate (small amount) is given over a 24 period Carbohydrate counting is usually used

Insulin pump A catheter is not implanted inside the patient s body It is attached to a catheter and inserted beneath the skin and fat tissues to different areas of the body

Insulin Pump

Insulin pump: Sensor combinations

Insulin pump: Disposable

Inhaled insulin INDICATIONS AND USAGE FOR AFREZZA (INSULIN HUMAN) INHALATION POWDER Prescription Afrezza is a man-made rapid acting inhaled insulin breathed through your lungs and is used to control high blood sugar in adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

WARNING: RISK OF SUDDEN LUNG PROBLEMS (BRONCHOSPASM) IN PATIENTS WITH LONG-TERM (CHRONIC) LUNG DISEASE Sudden lung problems (acute bronchospasm) have been seen in patients with asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) using Afrezza. Afrezza is not to be used in patients with long-term lung disease such as asthma or COPD. Before initiating Afrezza, your doctor will perform a detailed medical history, physical examination, and a breathing test (called spirometry) to identify potential lung problems.

Afrezza

Continuous Glucose Monitoring Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is an FDA-approved device that provides real-time glucose readings, throughout the day and night, allowing people with diabetes to see their glucose levels and track how quickly they're increasing or decreasing. A typical CGM provides up to as many as 288 glucose readings per day (once every 5 minutes). CGM does not completely eliminate the need for blood glucose meter readings but provides additional information for more informed treatment decisions and improved glucose control. CGM can be used by people with Type 1 or Type 2 who are concerned with their diabetes management.

How Does CGM Work? CGM unveils what no meter can. Unlike fingersticks that give a number for a single point in time, CGM provides dynamic glucose information by showing where your glucose is, where it s going, and how fast it s getting there.
