1 Learning Enhancement Grant Program Grant Application Applicant Information Applicants must be full time faculty members. 1. Applicant Name Teresa D. Golden 3. Department Chemistry 2. EMPLID: 4. College/School: A&S 5. List names of any additional members on the project: Guido Verbeck and Steve Cooke 6. Have you ever received a Learning Enhancement Grant? Yes it was a Teaching w/ Technology grant in If so, when? 2003 Project Information Projects must focus on using technology to improve or enrich the learning experiences and should align with UNT s Strategic goal of promoting excellence in student centered education. Preference will be given to projects that also support the university s strategic plan for research. Projects that involve the exploration of new or emerging technologies are encouraged. 8. Project title: Development of a Forensic Chemistry Professional Science Masters Program 9. Project abstract (50 words): The Department of Chemistry at UNT is designing a Professional Science Masters Program (PSM) degree in Forensic Chemistry to begin Fall The chemistry department proposes to design and deliver part of this program on line with the help of CLEAR. Courses with online components (50 100%) towards the Forensic Science (PSM) Program would include: CHEM 5390 (Forensic Chemistry), CHEM 5390 (Foundations in Quantitative Analysis), CHEM 5390 (Advanced Chromatography) and CHEM 5390 (Instrumentation in Forensic Science). This proposal would help design and complete these additional four courses to be offered for the new Forensic Chemistry PSM degree. 10. What are the project goals and how do you believe this project will enhance student learning? UNT is home to the only undergraduate nationally accredited Forensic Science Program in Texas (one of 16 in the nation). This program began in 2005 and has grown to over 100 current students in The undergraduate program receives interest (by phone, mail, in person) from students wanting to attend a Master s program in Forensic Science. Therefore one of the goals of the Department of Chemistry is to expand Forensic Science into the graduate program at UNT and also become nationally accredited at the Masters level. This proposal is the first step in developing the courses for this program. In 2009 the National Academy of Sciences released a report on the state of forensic science in the US and one of their recommendations to Congress was to To attract students in the physical and life sciences to pursue graduate studies in multidisciplinary fields critical to forensic science practice, to improve and develop graduate education programs designed to cut across organizational, programmatic, and disciplinary boundaries Our second goal, therefore is to develop the core forensic science courses needed by the graduate students in the program and to begin development of interdisciplinary courses with the criminal justice department for our students. 1

2 2010/2011 Learning Enhancement Grant Application Please describe the project and the work you will need to complete to accomplish your project goals? For the PSM Forensic Chemistry Program, students will need to complete a total of 36 hours. Of these 36 hours, hours must be in chemistry. Nine of these hours are foundation chemistry courses currently offered each year in chemistry. Then there are 3 6 hours of research required in the field of forensic science. The other 9 12 hours must be in forensic chemistry related courses. The only existing course to fit this topic is Advanced Chromatography (which needs updating for the forensic field). We propose to develop 3 courses and redesign one course this coming summer which will be used as part of the forensic chemistry components in the program. These courses are: Forensic Chemistry (3 hours), Instrumentation in Forensic Science (3 hours), Advanced Chromatography (3 hours) and Foundations in Quantitative Analysis (3 hours). Forensic Chemistry will be taught by Dr. Verbeck in Spring 2012, Instrumentation in Forensic Science will be taught by Dr. Golden in Spring 2012, Advanced Chromatography will be taught by Dr. Golden in Fall 2012 and Foundations of Quantitative Analysis by Dr. Cooke in Summer Timeline for the development: Fall 2010 complete course adoptions in chemistry and A&S. Spring 2011 outline courses, develop syllabus and meet with CLEAR staff to brainstorm on web content and implementation. Summer 2011 develop and design course content. Spring, Summer, and Fall 2012 offer courses to new Forensic Chemistry graduate students. 12. What is your plan for evaluating if this project has improved or enhanced student learning? Testing, course surveys, and other student feedback will be used to evaluate teaching and technology strategies used in the courses. For national accreditation, the National Institute of Justice has put out very specific guidelines for courses in Forensic Science degrees. The course contents will be compared and developed to follow these guidelines. In addition, the undergraduate program interviews and sends out surveys to each student who has graduated from the program and asks questions about each Forensic science course and what was the most helpful in their current job and what they did not get but need. Similar surveys will be developed by Dr. Golden and given to each student who goes through the PSM Forensic Chemistry program. Course information The grant project must involve the redesign or enhancement of one or more courses in the UNT course inventory. 13. Please enter course number(s) and name(s) and whether or not the courses are currently in the UNT course inventory: Course Number Course Title In UNT course inventory? CHEM 5390 Forensic Chemistry (in progress) No CHEM 5390 Foundations in Quantitative Analysis (in progress) No CHEM 5390 Advanced Chromatography Yes CHEM 5390 Instrumentation in Forensic Science (in progress) No 14. If any of the courses are not currently in the course inventory, please indicate when you anticipate they will be considered for approval: In progress and completed by this Spring. 15. How many students normally register for this course? (If more than one course, please list enrollments in each.) The Forensic Chemistry (PSM) degree will be a new program developed in the chemistry department, therefore it is difficult to know the enrollment. However current Masters courses in Chemistry typically have students enrolled each semester for each course. With the interest in Forensic Science on the Master s level, we anticipate that number also.

3 2010/2011 Learning Enhancement Grant Application Will this course be offered a least 50% online? Will any of the class contact hours be replaced by online instruction or activities? (For multiple courses, please respond for each one.) Each course will be between % online. Forensic Chemistry 50% probably will depend on final course design. Instrumentation in Forensic Science 50% probably will depend on final course design. Foundations in Quantitative Analysis 100% yes. Advanced Chromatography 100% yes. 17. If you plan to replace at least 50% of the classroom contact hours with online instruction or activities, has the course been approved for online delivery? Forensic Chemistry 50% no has not been approved. Instrumentation in Forensic Science 50% no has not been approved. Foundations in Quantitative Analysis 100% no has not been approved. Advanced Chromatography 100% yes has been approved. 18. If this course is going to be offered partially or fully online, please describe your experience designing and teaching in the online learning environment: Dr. Golden has developed 4 online courses for the Industrial Chemistry program and Chemistry Education program. These courses are rotated and offered online each year to the graduate students in these programs. Drs. Verbeck and Cooke have experience in web design and programming. Dr. Golden will help share her online course designs with them and steer them to the resources in CLEAR. Technology 19. What new technology are you planning to implement in this course as a result of this project? There will be interactive modules which cover chemistry instrumentation within these courses. The interactive modules developed will be for Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Chromatography (HPLC), Mass Spectrometry (MS), and Inductive Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy (ICP MS). These modules have virtual instruments for the students to perform experiments and see the predicted outcome. This helps familiarize and train the chemistry student on expensive equipment before they go and run the experiments in the lab. Dr. Golden has used these type of modules for safety laboratory training and handling of chemicals and has had excellent feedback from the students. Other modules will need to be developed for spectroscopy and more chromatography in the following year. Adobe will also be needed. 20. Describe your experience using this technology? If none, what will you do to develop expertise in using it? Dr. Golden has incorporated Academy Savant Training programs in her online courses covering laboratory safety. Dr. Verbeck has written and programmed GC interactive training modules at previous universities and can use Adobe suite to implement much of the design. The Adobe suite is needed to modify vector graphics and create and embed Flash movies into the presentations. These courses will need images produced from high resolution microscopy and imaging spectroscopy, and adobe PhotoShop is a package capable of handling and modifying the images to fit the presentation format. 21. What will students need in order to be able to take the course/use the technology? How will you prepare the students to use the technology? They will need access to a computer and access to Blackboard and the PIs websites. (Computer labs on campus offer this). The students will meet at the beginning of the semester to go over with the professor how to access the sites and also be directed to complete online Blackboard training. The majority of chemistry graduate students are already familiar with programming and Blackboard before joining the program.

4 2010/2011 Learning Enhancement Grant Application How does this project support UNT s strategic plan for research? Under section II.2.b. Additional Research Priorities of the Plan, one of UNT s Research emphases listed is Forensic Science. Recruitment of graduate students into this area will enhance the involvement of graduate students in forensic science research and education. Also under the executive summary of the Plan Increase UNT s National Visibility is listed as a priority. The implementation of a PSM program in forensic Chemistry and then expansion into the PhD program will put UNT ahead of other Universities in the nation in the Forensic science field. There are only 2 universities in the nation which do forensic research at the graduate level, UNT chemistry plans to overtake and lead research in this area. Budget Projects may be funded up to $5000 per course. Funds may be used to pay for student wages, faculty salary during summer months, a course release during the spring 2011 semester, and equipment that is necessary to the project, but is not normally provided by your department.
