MOVING THE PATIENT WITH LOW HEALTH LITERACY CLOSER TO MEETING HEALTH GOALS (co-developer) A half-day seminar to teach practitioners strategies to improve comprehension of health information for patients with low health literacy. The seminar will review the results of a health literacy practices assessment done in 2009 and blend evidence based techniques with role-play to strengthen knowledge and abilities of healthcare practitioners to motivate their patients to reach mutually developed healthcare goals. 5 Page Five USING INFORMATICS TO BRIDGE THE GAP IN HEALTH LITERACY (principal investigator). Develop a hauptics (touchscreen) computer interface to link patient with low health literacy to the National of Library Medline Plus health information resources. The kiosk will provide users with access to resources in English, Spanish & Russian, delivering audio as well as visual information to permit the greatest number of users to be exposed to the information. A printer will permit users to retrieve written information to share with others including their healthcare provider. Users will be prompted to rate kiosk material for ease of understanding, usability of the kiosk and belief of benefit to improving health and quality of life. Grant Application: 3/2010: National Network of Libraries of Medicine Outreach Program (Grant Award: $39,000) Health Literacy Area Clinician Assessment (principal investigator) Assessment of clinicians caring for adult patients in Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County to understand health literacy procedures used by physicians, nurse practitioners and physicians assistants practicing in the Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County area. Determined methods to improve patients understanding of health information by supporting needs identified by area practitioners to improve efficacy of health literacy strategies. (Capstone research document submitted to UVA library). Healthcare Literacy Outreach Initiative (co-investigator). Goal 11 of Healthy People 2010 was to use communication strategically to improve health (2000). This measure includes increased access to internet resources, evaluation of communications programs, evaluation of Internet health education and improved Health Literacy outreach. JMU s Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) sought RMH Foundation grant support to develop the Healthcare Literacy Outreach Initiative, a health literacy website and a program to train health care clinicians and staff to improve access to quality information for patients with low health literacy in the Harrisonburg / Rockingham County area. Application: RMH Foundation Grant (Grant Not Awarded). 6 Page Six Geriatric Assessment Pilot Program (faculty research coordinator): 1/3 rd appointment to JMU Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services. Directed a joint team of JMU and Rockingham Memorial Hospital clinicians and staff working to develop and pilot an interdisciplinary assessment and care coordination program for geriatric clients. Pilot assessed clients recommending therapies, treatments and referrals to client and primary care providers. Hearing, nutrition and physical therapies needs found in most clients. Received $30,000 Virginia Department on Aging grant through June (Completed) Remote Care Management Project (faculty research team member): Member of interdisciplinary team (health sciences, business and information technology) researching creation of educational program for those developing and managing remote care sensors. This goal of this technology is to allow older adults to stay in their homes longer by alerting family and practitioners that change in gait or functional pattern has occurred which may signal present or impending illness. This technology is being piloted at a number of universities and companies throughout the country but few sites are developing an educational curriculum to support this extremely important facet of geriatric care.
