Additional emphasis will be given to Adolescent substance abuse/dependence. Learning Objectives: Identification of substance abuse/dependence with the parent/caregiver Understand the negative impact on childrearing, family stability/economics/overall health Recognize adolescent abuse/dependence Identification of assessment and intervention strategies Awareness of the likelihood of Co-Occurring Disorders and complications involved Identify resources for treatment/support Understand the Recovery Process with respect to the individual and family unit Rob Covington, PhD, has over forty-five years experience in the fields of Addiction and Behavioral Health prevention, education, and intervention. He

5 served on the staff of the Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center for thirty-nine years. Before joining the staff of the Guidance Center he was Clinical Director of the Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program, Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. Dr. Covington has held staff positions in outpatient, residential, and inpatient programs for both psychiatric and substance abuse treatment facilities in the public and private sectors. He has served as past president and board member of the Arkansas Substance Abuse Certification Board and past president of the Arkansas Substance Abuse Providers Association. He currently serves on the State Board of Examiners of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and the Arkansas Alcohol and Drug Coordinating Council. He has been a member of the adjunct faculty of the MidAmerica Addiction Technology Transfer Center with the University of Missouri at Kansas City, MO and University of Arkansas at Little Rock, MidSOUTH Addictions Training Network, and the MidSOUTH Summer School. Until recently, Dr. Covington was director of the Horizon Adolescent Treatment Center and the Drug and Alcohol Safety Education Program of the Western Arkansas Counseling and Guidance Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He has been a pioneer in program development and implementation as well as direct services to adolescents and persons with Co-Occurring Disorders. There are three (3) ways to register: 1. 6 Interpersonal Violence within the LGBT Community: Beyond the Basics LIVE and Video Streaming: 30 seats available for live event. September 30, :00 am 12:00 pm (3 hours) MidSOUTH Little Rock 415 N. McKinley, Ste 900 Little Rock, AR (501) Registration Information for this event is outlined on the next page. The goal of this presentation is four-fold. First, the presenters will briefly review statistics, basic dynamics, and the Interpersonal Violence (IPV) cycle. Next, there will be a discussion of the interplay between IPV and the unique aspects of same sex /nonbinary couples. This includes discussing the impact of gender roles, issues of perceived power/control, societal stereotypes, and barriers to reporting IPV. Third, the presenters will explore the impact of LGBT IPV on children and families. Lastly, presenters provide attendees with examples of an LGBT/IPV assessment and resources. Time for questions is provided at the end of the presentation. Shanti M. Pepper, Ph.D., received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University after completing her internship at the Vanderbilt-VA Consortium. She completed her first postdoctoral fellowship at The Ohio State University and then moved to Little Rock to complete a specialty fellowship in PTSD (Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder) at The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. She is currently a full-time psychologist and co-founder of The Sage Center for Trauma and Wellness. Dr. Pepper has focused on LGBT specific issues in her research, outreach, and clinic work. Her professional manuscripts (e.g., dissertations and publications) explored topics such as LGBT stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination, and dynamics affecting same-sex couples. During her graduate training she was on an LGBT research team where, among many topics, same-sex interpersonal violence was investigated. She was an active member of the Penn State LGBT Resource Center, she is a member of the VA Outpatient Mental Health LGBT workgroup where she participated in a 16-week intensive training regarding transgender health issues. Dr. Pepper is particularly interested in therapeutic issues arising from interpersonal violence and trauma within same-sex/non-binary relationships.

7 Beth White, LCSW, is a full-time clinician, specializing in trauma treatment and co-founder of The Sage Center for Trauma and Wellness. She was originally inspired to seek a career in clinical service after volunteering with a local domestic violence shelter, where she received training in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) basics, dynamics, legal advocacy, and hotline counseling. Beth earned a Bachelor s Degree in Psychology and received her Master s Degree in Social Work from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. During her graduate school training, both of her internships were devoted to the treatment of trauma. Beth s first clinical practicum involved working with survivors of IPV and their children in a local non-profit agency. She interned as a member of the PTSD Clinical Team at the Little Rock VAMC during her final year of graduate studies. Beth regularly provides education about the impact and treatment of trauma to the community, including area mental health providers and university students at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She provides services to LGBT clients and assists IPV survivors of all sexual orientations at The Sage Center. Beth s clinical interest include generational family/relationship violence patterns, assisting abuse survivors with development of stable sense of self, and assertiveness training with survivors of IPV. 8 Understanding the Relationship between Attachment Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder October 23, :00 am- 4:00 pm (6 hours) MidSOUTH Little Rock 415 N. McKinley, Ste 900 Little Rock, AR Research has indicated a relationship between Attachment Disorder and the development of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This training will provide an overview of the various levels of attachment; the symptoms seen in complex PTSD; the relationship of chronic trauma, such as long-term child abuse/neglect, to symptoms of PTSD; and a review of current evidence-based treatments for the traumatized child/adult. This information will be helpful for those working with children and adults who have experienced chronic abuse, neglect, and trauma. Susan R. Adams, LCSW, ACADC, CCDP-D, QMRP, has over 17 years of experience in mental health and over 11 years in teaching at the college level. She is a clinical social worker at the Central Arkansas Veterans Heathcare System Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Conway. She has been a clinical instructor at the University of Central Arkansas in the Addiction Studies program and an adjunct instructor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in the sociology department. 9 Understanding Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents November 6, :00 am 12:00 pm (3 hours) MidSOUTH Little Rock 415 N. McKinley, Ste 900 Little Rock, AR This three hour workshop will provide an overview of the epidemiology and etiology of Eating Disorders (EDs), the typical clinical presentation of EDs, information on the changing population of EDs within the state of Arkansas, belief systems of those struggling with EDs, and the myths associated with these individuals. The presenters will review current assessment, screening, and diagnostic criteria for EDs. Information on the medical workup for EDs, medical complications of food restriction and/or purging behaviors, and indicators for hospital admission will be provided. There will be an overview of the nutritional treatment of EDs, as well as approaches to food and healthy eating. Finally, the workshop will cover information on referral/ resource options and strategies to approach and support people with difficulties with eating. Registration information for this workshop in included on the next page. Jen Freilino, BA, MS, LPC Jen is an eating disorder psychotherapist at Arkansas Children s Hospital. Jen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hendrix College and a Master of Science degree from University of Central Arkansas. After providing general psychotherapy in Russellville, she moved to Little Rock to further specialize in eating disorder treatment. She has received training in family-based treatment (i.e., the Maudsley method) for anorexia nervosa in adolescents by the Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating disorders. She has also received specific training in mindfulness-based therapies and interventions (i.e., DBT, ACT, and MBSR), which serve as additional resources in the treatment of eating disorders. Skip Hoggard, BA, MS, LPE-I Skip has worked for Arkansas Children s Hospital in the Adolescent Medicine Division for fifteen years. His main focus area is working with male and female teens and children with eating disorders. Skip also works with trauma victims as well as children and adolescents with sexual behavior problems in the Family Treatment Center at

10 Jessica Moore, MD, FAAP Dr. Moore completed her undergraduate degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, earning a B.S. in Biology and completed her medical degree at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. She moved to Arkansas to do her residency in Pediatrics at Arkansas Children s Hospital and UAMS. From early on, Dr. Moore had an interest in Eating Disorders, and after completing residency joined the Child and Adolescent Eating Disorder Program at Arkansas Children s Hospital. She is currently the Medical Director for the Eating Disorder Program at ACH. She also spends a portion of her time in the Adolescent Medicine Clinic at Arkansas Children s Hospital as a primary care physician taking care of teenagers. Susan Goolsby, MS, RD, LD Susan has been working with eating disorder patients since 2002 and is the assistant director for Clinical Nutrition at Arkansas Children s Hospital. Susan primarily works with eating disorder patients who are admitted to the hospital, but also spends some of her time in the outpatient setting as well. 11 Fostering the Bond: Fighting Burnout with Love November 12, :00 am 12:00 pm (3 hours) MidSOUTH Fayetteville 241 West Spring St, Ste B Fayetteville, AR (479) The helping relationship is the most important tool for positive changes. This relationship is only possible when helpers, working at any level of a care system, are able to connect to those they try to help. Burnout and frustration are natural consequences of our connections. This training is designed to help the helpers maintain their ability to connect and care for those in need. Kenneth Brant Cates, MS, LPC, graduated from the University of Arkansas with BS in Psychology and Sociology and an MS in Rehabilitation Counseling. Cates has worked within the Division of Children and Family Services and the Division of County Operations. He worked and supervised services for various partial-day hospitalization facilities providing services to preschoolers through adults with severe mental illness and developmental disabilities. Cates has been a therapist in Therapeutic Foster Care. He currently works in Vantage Point Behavioral Health s outpatient office in Bentonville and still has a lot of involvement with children served by the child welfare system.
