6 Department of Nurse Education Degree Certificate Program Change October 2014 Section I: Description and Justification of Changes The proposed degree plan adheres to the AAS requirements of SB 497(60 SCH Rule) and forms the foundation in the preparation of an Associate Degree Nurse. The number of SCH for the degree is comparable to the number SCH required for a similar degree in the state (THECB, 2014). In review of the 56 Associate Degree Nursing programs approved by the Texas Board of Nursing 80% do not include Chemistry in their AAS education degree plan. These programs do however include BIOL 2420 with no Chemistry prerequisite and/or satisfied through the Anatomy and Physiology courses as recommended by the Academic Course Guide Manual. Currently 66% of the ADN programs that do not require Chemistry are accredited by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). It is imperative to Del Mar College and the program that we are in accordance with the ACEN standards (ACEN, 2013). Standard 4:3 The curriculum is developed by the nursing faculty and regularly reviewed to ensure integrity, rigor, and currency. Standard 4:8 The length of time and the credit hours required for program completion are congruent with the attainment of identified student learning outcomes and program outcomes and consistent with the policies of the governing organization, state and national standards, and best practices. Section II: Impact on other Departments Dr. Southard and I have formalized several meetings on the proposed AAS degree plan changes since the SB 497(60 SCH Rule) mandate. Discussion points in our meetings surround the general education courses that must remain to comply with AAS requirements. The only viable option to conform with the mandate is to drop the Chemistry 1406 since the Life and Physical Sciences Foundational Component is met with the 6 SCH in BIOL 2401 Human Anatomy I and BIOL 2402 Human Anatomy II. On July 9, 2014 Dr. Southard, Dr. McWha and myself met to discuss our plans to drop the Chemistry 1406 and how to enhance chemistry to increase the relevancy in allied health and nursing programs. We shared with Dr. Southard our programs continued commitment and strong advisement for all nursing students to take Chemistry 1406 prior to BIOL 2420 Microbiology and Clinical Pathology. In addition the program recommends a statement that can be added to the Chemistry 1406 course description: Furthermore we indicated to Dr. Southard that 70% of the current admissions to our program are on the AA-Registered Nurse Education degree plan. The revised AA-Registered Nurse Education degree plan now introduces Chemistry 1406 earlier in the course sequencing. The current number of majors for this AAS program track is 205 for Fall academic year. In addition, the seamless articulation plans with standardized general education courses will be marketed to our prospective students through our web-site, strong advisement, and other RN to BSN promotional educational events with articulation partners. Our participation in a

7 Department of Nurse Education Degree Certificate Program Change October 2014 complete standardized concept-based nursing curriculum for the associate degree level include competencies equivalent to the BSN student level, where a seamless articulation from RN to BSN can occur. By implementing the BSN curriculum with ADN exit at the end of year 3 and the last 30 hours being available at a university, there should be a significant increase in the number of ADN graduates starting BSN courses by the fall of Revision October 23, 2014 Since the Natural Science Department has elected to continue with the requirement of the prerequisite of Chemistry 1406 for BIOL 2420 Microbiology we are agreeable to the following option. The option below will be an admission program requirement and students will be advised accordingly. It is our recommendation that the program students be required to pay only the $10.00 for petition to record credit. Note: The Chemistry 1406 for CEUs (Continuing Education Units) must be completed in Level I of the program and prior to the co- requisite BIO 2420 Microbiology and Clinical Pathology. The Chemistry 1406 CEU course may not meet the criteria for financial aid assistance; please check with their office. If the student chooses to have to the Chemistry 1406 CEU course converted to semester credit hours a petition to record credit form must be completed.
