3 Introduction Becoming a Patient Transport Offi cer for St John Ambulance provides you with the opportunity to join a progressive community organisation, caring for people across two and a half million square kilometres, the largest area in the world covered by a single ambulance service. Each year we transport more than 200,000 people across the state and teach over 140, 000 people life saving fi rst aid skills. This Information Pack will tell you everything you need to know about the important role our Patient Transport Offi cers play within our organisation, how best to apply for a position and the selection process which will follow your application. What it Takes to be a St John Ambulance Patient Transport Officer The duties of our Patient Transport Offi cers include: the routine care of patients requiring nonurgent treatment and their transportation to and from healthcare facilities, clinics and private residence. Many calls involve non-communicative and seriously ill, albeit stable patients. The role also includes response to non-urgent trauma calls. To succeed in the role of Patient Transport Offi cer, you must have a strong desire to help others in need, possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, and the ability to remain calm in varied and challenging situations. How to Become a Patient Transport Officer for St John Ambulance To be eligible to apply for the position of Patient Transport Offi cers within St John Ambulance you will need to be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia who is eligible for employment. Requirements also include: A current WA C Class driver s licence with an excellent driving record and be prepared to obtain a Light Rigid (LR) license Excellent customer service Teamwork Excellent personal health and fi tness levels Excellent communication skills, both written and oral Flexibility in regard to working hours A sound knowledge of the Perth metropolitan area If you feel you possess all of the above criteria this could be the career for you. 4 The Application Process The process all applicants undertake ensures we employ Patient Transfer Offi cers of the highest standard, who fi t best within the organisation. Information Session Prospective candidates can come along to an information session at our Head Offi ce to fi nd out more about the position they are applying for and listen to speakers from different areas of our organisation, including the College of Pre Hospital Care, The Recruitment Team and Operations. This session enables prospective candidates to gain a better understanding of the role and make the important decision to submit their application for the position of Patient Transport Offi cer. The Application As part of your application, you will need to provide: The Application Form and Medical Questionnaire Please note you will not be able to apply for this position until applications open. Applications are to be completed online by visiting our website Please select the Patient Transport Offi cer vacancy and follow the steps in our online application form. This will also take you through a Medical Questionnaire which must be completed. This health questionnaire relates to the position you are applying for and duties you must be able to perform in the role. A Cover Letter Explain why you would be suitable for the position you are applying for. What has motivated you to apply for this position at St John Ambulance? Outline any other relevant attributes or information that would support you application. Provide personal and contact details. Your Resume Candidates must submit a resume with their application which outlines a complete history of their employment and education. Resumes should include the following information as a minimum: Personal details such as residential address, contact telephone numbers, and residency status Academic qualifi cations Previous work experience (in chronological order from most recent) Any other achievements/accomplishments which you feel may be relevant to the position Two professional Referees. 5 The Selection Process If your application is successful, you will be invited to take part in our selection process. Assessment Centre The Assessment Centre allows candidates to demonstrate aptitude, communication and team work skills. The assessment centre does not aim to test the knowledge and technical skills which relate to the position being applied for. The assessment centre consists of group exercises, conducted under the supervision of an assessment panel. If you are invited to an assessment centre, it is important to be yourself and not act in accordance with what you think the assessors are looking for. It is advisable that you are on time and wear smart, but comfortable clothing. Interview Interviews are also conducted as part of the recruitment process. The interview will be conducted by a selection panel of two interviewers, including a St John Ambulance WA Manager and a representative from the recruitment team. The interview will take approximately one hour. The interview will give you the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have concerning the position. If you are invited to interview you will need to supply the following documents; A Current Apply First Aid Certificate A current Apply First Aid Certifi cate or proof of sitting an Apply First Aid course must be provided by the day of interview. You can organise to sit an Apply First Aid course by booking online at stjohnchangelives.com.au or by phoning (08) , there are several options available from fl exible learning to two day courses. Current Driver s Licence A current driver s licence must be provided by the day of interview. Traffic Infringements and Traffic Convictions Traffi c infringement and convictions must be supplied by the day of interview. They can both be obtained from your local Police Station. National Police Clearance A National Police Clearance that is no older than three months or a receipt to prove they have applied for a police clearance must be provided on the day of interview. Police Clearances can be obtained from your local Post Offi ce. Working with Children Check Candidates applying for an on-road operational role will need to apply for a Working with Children Check. Proof of application documentation or the actual Working with Children Check card will need to be supplied by the time of interview. Psychometric Testing Designed by psychologists, our psychometric assessments are used to assess a candidate s abilities, personality, motivations, values and interests. Functional Capacity Test The Functional Capacity Evaluation is the physical component of the recruitment process. This will take approximately 90 minutes and will be conducted off-site. The type of work undertaken as a Patient Transport Offi cer with St John Ambulance may require a level of physical fi tness. As part of the recruitment process your levels of physical capacity will be assessed. This information is intended for applicants to judge whether their own physical capabilities are suffi ciently high to be considered for the position or whether further physical preparation would be required. Assessment includes: Body Mass Index (BMI) or Percentage Body Fat A healthy range for BMI or percentage body fat is required. Blood Pressure Measurement of blood pressure and cardiac risk screening, readings to be within normal limits. Musculo-skeletal Review Relevant medical history and any injuries are noted - some injuries will not preclude applicants. Fitness Assessed through a step test with recovery heart rates recorded. Fitness to be at a good level. Strength Tests Upper body Push-ups Lower body Squats (including sustained semi-squat), lunges, sustained kneeling, standing forward bend Core Stability, sit-ups and trunk rotation Hamstring Flexibility Demonstrate average to good hamstring fl exibility. Series of Power Lifting Tasks Demonstrate appropriate manual handling techniques while lifting and carrying a variety of loads up to 30kg. For example: carrying a 20kg crate over a distance before placing item on a high shelf. Tasks can include sideways walking. Patient Transport Offi cers Information Pack 3

7 Location Patient Transport Offi cers will be appointed a Depot in the Perth Metropolitan area. Hours of Work The ordinary hours of duty shall be an average of 38 per week, with the actual hours worked being 42.5 hours per week. The accrued hours are to be taken as whole days off in accordance with the leave roster. A Patient Transport offi cer may work the following rosters: Monday - Friday Between 0600 and 1800 Monday - Friday 1600 to 0030 Monday - Friday 1630 to 0100 Monday - Friday 1300 to 2130 Monday - Friday 1400 to 2230 Weekends Only (Part Time 8.5hour shifts) Leave Classification Leave Entitlements Four Weeks Annual Monday to Leave and Two Weeks Friday Roster Additional Leave Weekend Roster Four Weeks Probation A new employee is subject to a 3 month probationary period starting at the commencement of employment. Uniforms A uniform will be provided by St John Ambulance WA that refl ects the professional image of the organisation. It is designed to ensure a safe, functional and comfortable uniform to meet the needs of the role as Patient Transport Offi cer. Salary Packaging An employee may, with the agreement of St John Ambulance, enter into a salary packaging arrangement upon completion of their probation. This enables employees to salary package expenses from pre-tax salary up to a pre-determined limit each year. Health and Wellbeing Allowance A Health and Wellbeing Allowance has been set up to reimburse employees for expenses related to gym memberships and fi tness programs. Upon completion of probation employees become eligible for an annual allowance each year. Leave Loading Employees are entitled to a 17.5% loading on their four weeks annual leave. Free Ambulance Cover All employees of St John Ambulance are entitled to free ambulance cover which extends to dependent family members. Paid Parental Leave After 12 months of service employees are entitled to paid parental leave up to 12 weeks, depending on the type of leave the employee is taking. Parental leave provisions are included in the relevant award or agreement.
