CALLIGRAPHY CONTEST As Albaraka Turk Participation Bank, we are very happy to be holding the fourth Calligraphy Contest in 2014, which we held in 2005, 2008 and 2012 as part of our activities in arts and culture. Being a part of our cultural landscape because of the values it has come to symbolize in about it s a-thousand-year long history, the art of calligraphy is one of the most significant branches of art that represent the Islamic aesthetics. OBJECT OF THE CONTEST To cherish, develop, encourage and promote the art of calligraphy, the most prominent art of the Islamic civilization and to establish a shared artistic understanding and taste. 4. SUBJECT The subject of the contest is determined as Spending for the Sake of Allah (Infaq). 2 P a g e

3 5. SECRETARIAT OF THE CONTEST All communication regarding the contest will be carried out by Albaraka s Secretariat of the Calligraphy Contest. Albaraka s Corporate Communications Office will act as the secretariat The task of the secretariat of the calligraphy contest is just to organize the contest and it is in no way responsible for the decisions made by the jury or the results of the contest. 6. REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST a) Anyone who is capable of creating works of calligraphy can participate in the contest provided that he/she complies with the requirements laid out in this specification. b) Contestants can submit works in more than one field. However, one can submit only one work in each section, in other words one cannot contest in one field by more than one work. The works to be submitted to the contest cannot be imitations, duplications or ones that were previously published or exhibited somewhere else. c) The works to be submitted to the contest should be in accordance with the principles of the art of classical calligraphy. d) Contestants can write in their panels in any form they wish, provided that they stay within the specified measurements. The writings that are in the form of lines may have equal spaces (expressed by the term armchair) on the right and left sides of the texts on the first, the middle and the last lines if it is necessary. e) Contestant can use any color of ink of their choosing except in works submitted to the Thuluth-Naskh categories black ink must be used. The panels will be written in classic 3 P a g e

4 colors on papers suitable for calligraphy specially glossed by ahar. Panels written on white paper or other similar papers which are not suitable and specially glossed by ahar for calligraphy will not be assessed in the competition. f) Works with obvious spelling errors will not be taken into consideration. g) If desired, in order to ensure the organization among the verses, contestants may use phrases similar to قال تعالى - قال هللا تعالى - بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم at the beginning of the verses and phrases similar to صدق هللا - صدق هللا العظيم - صدق هللا الكريم at the end of the verses whichever fits the composition. Likewise, in order to ensure the organization among the ahadith, one may use phrases similar to قال النبي - قال رسول هللا at the beginning of the ahadith and phrases similar to etc. at the end of the verses صدق - صدق حبيب هللا - صدق رسول هللا - صلي هللا عليه وسلم whichever fits the composition. The invocation of صلى هللا عليه وسلم may be used along with the above mentioned phrases. The above mentioned additional phrases are for the purpose of completing the organization of the work and therefore they will not be evaluated by the jury. h) The works submitted to the contest should not bear any signature or any other sign or indication of personal identity. i) The contestants should mail their works to the specified address or submit them in person. They should submit their works in the form of unframed paper that is not glued to a cardboard and in a way which will ensure the work not be curled, scrunched or broken. Albaraka is not responsible in case of any damage to or delay, lost in the shipment of mailed works. If a price is determined and declared for the works participating from abroad, a customs tax will be charged and the works will be required to go through the customs process. For that reason, there must not be a price tag specified for the works submitted from abroad. j) Together with their calligraphy panel, contestants should also include in the same envelope their complete resume with their photograph, personal identity information, mailing address, phone and fax numbers as well as their address if they have any, and information on their educational and professional background. k) Deadline for the submission of works to the secretariat of the contest is March 2 nd, l) Those who participate in this contest by submitting their work hereby agree to all the conditions laid out in this specification. 4 P a g e

CALENDAR OF THE CONTEST Albaraka Calligraphy Contest will be carried out in accordance with the following calendar unless there is any legal reason or force majeure to change its course. a) The announcement of the contest (14 August 2014) b) Deadline for the submission of works (02 March 2015) c) Assembly of the jury (16 March 2015) d) Announcement of the results (20 April 2015) e) Awards ceremony (October 2015) 9. PRIZES The total amount of prize for Albaraka s Calligraphy Contest is TL which will be distributed as follows, Styles of Calligraphy 1 st Prize 2 nd Prize 3 rd Prize Total Jali Thuluth 30,000 TL 20,000 TL 15,000 TL 65,000 TL Thuluth 30,000 TL 20,000 TL 15,000 TL 65,000 TL Thuluth-naskh 30,000 TL 20,000 TL 15,000 TL 65,000 TL Jali taliq 30,000 TL 20,000 TL 15,000 TL 65,000 TL Jali diwani 30,000 TL 20,000 TL 15,000 TL 65,000 TL In addition to these prizes, there will also be 30,000 TL for the works participating to the free style category. Those who wish to participate the contest in this category can submit their works in any measurements without being restricted by the ones specified above. Moreover there will be a total of 7,500 encouragement award for the works chosen by the jury among the works that have not come in the first three places in the competition. In return for these awards, all of the prize winning calligraphy works will be taken for the Albaraka Turk Calligraphy Collection as stipulated in article 10 of this specifications. 5 P a g e

COPYRIGHTS Contestants who participate in the contest by mailing or personally submitting their works hereby accept and confirm that they accept and will fulfill all the other provisions in this specification and those written below: a) Contestants are the creators of their work. All financial and non-financial benefits as well as rights and entitlements on the work belong to the creator of that work and are not relinquished or transferred over to any real persons or legal entities in any way either partially or totally. b) Contestants who are the owners of prize-winning works transfer all their financial and property rights on their work to Albaraka Turk Participation Bank Co. without the necessity of a separate contract or a demand for an additional charge, fee or price other than the prize money or any restriction on time, place or content. c) The works that are not recipient of any prizes or encouragement awards will be returned at the headquarters of Albaraka Turk Participation Bank at the following address: Saray Mahallesi, Dr. Adnan Büyükdeniz Caddesi, No: 6, Ümraniye/İstanbul within a year after the announcement of the results of the contest. Contestants who do not collect their works within the time limit will have transferred all of their financial rights on their works to Albaraka Turk Participation Bank without any charge and without the necessity of a separate contract or any restriction of time, place or content. d) Based on the provisions above, Albaraka Turk Participation Bank, as the proprietor of the financial rights of the regarding works including utilization, reproduction, representation and/or publication via symbol, sound or image without any restrictions of time, place and content is entitled to use these rights herein by broadcasting and/or publishing the regarding works on TV, internet and through other media, by transferring these works on various media such as catalogues, brochures, posters, booklets, books, agendas, calendars, magazines, CDs, video, etc., and by publishing and/or broadcasting and distributing these works, by utilizing them in activities at home or abroad and by transferring these rights to third parties, all without being limited to these options. e) Prizes for the winning works will be presented to their owners at a ceremony where other works too will be exhibited. The date of the ceremony and the exhibition will be announced after the announcement of the contest results. f) Prize-winning works will be published as a catalogue. 6 P a g e

7 g) In case of any changes about the personal or address information submitted by the contestants, the owner of the works must immediately inform these changes in written form. h) Albaraka Turk Participation Bank Co. does not hold any responsibility in case of any loss or damage to works for any reason either during the process of delivering/sending/transporting works to Albaraka Turk Participation Bank for the contest or in the time that passes before the owners collect their works that do not win any awards after the contest. 11. BRANCHES OF THE CONTEST AND RELATED TEXTS The calligraphy contest will be competed in the following branches. The works that are submitted in the calligraphy branches stated below will be taken into assessment, while the works that are not in those styles will not be assessed (except the ones sent in the category of free style). A) JALI THULUTH Only one of the following texts will be written. The nib of the pen to be used should not be narrower than 6 mm. The width of panels should not be shorter than 35 cm and the height of the panel should not be longer than 100 cm. The area of the writing should fill about two thirds of the whole paper. Provided to be between these sizes, contestants may use any size, horizontally or vertically, of their choosing. ن ي وق ش ح ن فس ه فأ ولئ ك ه م الم ن ف س ك م فل ح ون. )سورة التغابن اآلية ٦١ ( 1. و أن ف ق وا خ ير ا ل و م And spend in charity for the benefit of your own soul and those saved from the covetousness of their own souls, they are the ones that achieve prosperity. Whatever good you give shall be rendered back to you, and you shall not be dealt with unjustly. Give of the good things which you have (honorably) earned, and of the fruits of the earth which We have produced for you, and do not even aim at getting anything which is bad, in order that out of it you may give away something. (al-baqara, 2: 267) ه م وأ اله م ب أن له م الج نة. )سورة التوبة اآلية ٦٦٦ ( 5. ى م ن الم ؤم ن ين أنف س مو إ ن ا لل اشتر Allah has purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise). (al-tawbah, 9: 111) ي نفس ه ابت غاء م ب الع ب. )سورة البقرة اآلية ٠٢٧ ( ن يشر 6. و م ن الن اس م ؤ وف اد رض ات ا لل و ا لل ر And there is the type of man who gives his life to earn the pleasure of Allah: And Allah is full of kindness to (His) devotees. (al-baqara, 2: 207) غف رة خ ي ل يم. )سورة البقرة اآلية ٠١٢ ( 7. وم ا لل غن ي ح معر وف هآ أذى و ع تب ر م ن ص د قة ي قول Kind words and the covering of faults are better than charity followed by injury. Cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day. (al-baqara, 2: 264) ا أنفقت م م ن ش يء فه و ي خل ف ه و ه و خ ير الراز ق ين. )سورة سبأ اآلية ٢٣ ( 9. و م And nothing do ye spend in the least (in His cause) but He replaces it: for He is the Best of those who grant Sustenance. (Saba, 34: 39) يعم ل م ثقال ذرة خ يرا يره. )سورة الزلزال اآلية ٧ ( ن 11. فم Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! (al-zalzalah, 99: 7) 11. من ج اء ب الح س نة فله عشر أمثال ها. )سورة النعام اآلية ٦١٢ ( He that doeth good shall have ten times as much to his credit... (al-an am, 6: 160). )سورة البقرة اآلية علمه ا لل و ل وا م ن خ ير ي ا تفع اب م ا أ ول ي اللب ى و اتق ون ي تز ود وا فإ ن خ ير الزاد التقو 12. و And whatever good ye do, (be sure) Allah knows it. And take a provision (With you) for the journey, but the best of provisions is right conduct. So fear Me, o you that are wise. (al-baqara, 2: 197) )٦٣٧ ب لوال أخرتن ي إ لى أج ل قر ي 13. و أن في ر الم وت ق ول أت ي أح د ك م أن ي زقناك م م ن قبل ف ق وا م ن ما ر فأصدق و أك ن م ن الصال ح ين. )سورة المنافقون اآلية ٦٢ ( and spend something (in charity) out of the substance which We have bestowed on you, before Death should come to any of you and he should say, O my Lord! why did You not give me 9 P a g e

10 respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity, and I should have been one of the doers of good. (al-munafiqun, 63: 10) B) THULUTH Only one of the following texts will be written. The number of lines should not be less than 5. The nib of the pen should not be smaller than 1.5 mm or bigger than 3 mm. The width of panels should not be shorter than 35 cm and the height of the panel should not be longer than 100 cm. There are indeed many among the priests and anchorites, who in Falsehood devour the substance of men and hinder (them) from the way of Allah. And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty- On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, their flanks, and their backs. This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried! They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned. Allah giveth manifold increase to whom He pleaseth: And Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things. Those who spend their substance in the cause of Allah, and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury,-for them their reward is with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. Give of the good things which ye have (honourably) earned, and of the fruits of the earth which We have produced for you, and do not even aim at getting anything which is bad, in order that out of it ye may give away something, when ye yourselves would not receive it except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of all wants, and worthy of all praise. The Evil one threatens you with poverty and bids you to conduct unseemly. Allah promiseth you His forgiveness and bounties. And Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things. (al-baqara. 2: ) ل وا رس ول ا لل صل ى ار سأ ا لل عنه م ا أن ناسا م ن النص ي ض ال ك بن س نان الخ در ي ر عن أب ي س ع يد س عد بن م ك ن فق ال له م ح ين أنفق ك ل ش يء ب يد ه : "ما ي ا ع ند ه فأعطاه م ح ت ى نف د م فأعطاه م ث م سأل وه ا لل عليه و سلم ا أ عط ي. م صبر ي ص ب ره ا لل ت ن ي ستغن ي غن ه ا لل وم ن ي وم ستعف ف ي ع فه ا لل ن ي عنك م وم و ير فلن أدخ ه م ن خ ر أح د عطاء خ يرا و أ وس ع م ن الصبر " )متفق عليه(.5 Narrated by Abu Said Sa d Ibn Malik Ibn Sinan al-khudri (may Allah be pleased with them), Some Ansari persons asked for (something) from Allah s Messenger (p.b.u.h) and he gave them. They again asked him for (something) and he again gave them. And then they asked him and he gave them again till all that was with him finished. When he had nothing left to give, he said: 11 P a g e

12 م) If I had anything, I would not keep it away from you. (Remember) Whoever abstains from asking others, Allah will make him contented, and whoever tries to make himself self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience. (Bukhari, Zakat, 50, Riqaq 20; Muslim, Zakat, 124) عليه ص د قة ى م ن الن اس ي ا لل عنه قال : سلم : "ك ل س لم ض يرة ر لى ا لل عليه و قال رس ول ا لل ص عن أب ي ه ر له عليها أو ترفع له عليها ك ل يو م تطل ع ف يه الشمس: تعد ل بين اثنين ص د قة وت ع ين الرج ل في دابت ه فتحم ل يها إ لى الصلة ص د قة وت م يط ال ذى عن الطر يق ة ص د قة و ب ك ل خ طو ة تمش الكل مة الطي ب متاعه ص د قة و ص د قة " تفق عليه(.6 Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There is a (compulsory) sadaqa (charity) to be given for every joint of the human body (as a sign of gratitude to Allah) everyday the sun rises. To judge justly between two persons is regarded as sadaqa, and to help a man concerning his riding animal by helping him to ride it or by lifting his luggage on to it, is also regarded as sadaqa, and (saying) a good word is also sadaqa, and every step taken on one s way to offer the compulsory prayer (in the mosque) is also sadaqa and to remove a harmful thing from the way is also sadaqa. (Bukhari, Sulh, 11, Jihad 72; Muslim, Zakat, 56) ال ظ ل إ ال وم ة ي ظ ل ه م ا لل ف ي ظ ل ه ي سلم قال : س بع لى ا لل عليه و ب ي ص ي ا لل عنه عن الن ض عن أب ي ه ر يرة ر ا ج ل ن تح ابا ف ي ا لل اجتمع ور س اج د لق ب الم ع ج ل قل ب ه م ادة ا لل عز و ج ل ور عاد ل و ش اب نش أ ف ي ع ب ظ ل ه إ مام ج ل ت ص دق ب ص د قة أخفاها و ج م ال فقال إ ن ي أخ اف ا لل ور نص دعته امرأة ذات م ج ل عليه و تفرقا عليه ور. )متفق عليه( ذكر ا لل خ ال يا ففاض ت عيناه ت ى ال تعلم ش م ج ل ين ه ور م ح ال ه ما ت نف ق ي.7 Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah s Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are: (1) a just ruler; (2) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (i.e. worship Allah (Alone) sincerely from his childhood), (3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque); (4) two persons who 12 P a g e

13 love each other only for Allah s sake and they meet and part in Allah s cause only; (5) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah; (6) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity). (7) A person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears. (Bukhari, Zakat 16; Muslim, Zakat 91) C) THULUTH NASKH Contestants can write the following texts in any form they wish provided that they pay close attention to the arrangement, composition and order of the meaning of the texts. In other words, contestants in this category may combine more than one verse or hadith. The nib of the thuluth pen should not be narrower than 1.5 mm and not wider than 3 mm while the nib of the naskh pen should not be wider than 1 mm. The panel size can be between 35x50 cm and 50x70 cm. Contestants are free to choose any size between these dimensions. Writings in thuluth should not be less than 5 (five) lines and the naskh texts should not be less than 10 (ten) lines. فأما من أعطى و اتقى و ص دق ب الح سنى ن ي ره ل لي سرى و أما من بخ ل و استغنى و كذب ب الح سنى ن ي ره فس س فس س ا ي غن ي عنه مال ه إ ذا دى إ ن علينا لله د ى. )سورة الليل اآلية ٦٠ ٣ ( ل لع سرى و م تر.1 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best, We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, And gives the lie to the best, We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide. Say: Whatever ye spend that is good, is for parents and kindred and orphans and those in want and for wayfarers. And whatever ye do that is good, -Allah knoweth it well. 15 O ye who believe! There are indeed many among the priests and anchorites, who in Falsehood devour the substance of men and hinder (them) from the way of Allah. And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty- On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, their flanks, and their backs. This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried! Allah giveth manifold increase to whom He pleaseth: And Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things. Those who spend their substance in the cause of Allah, and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury,-for them their reward is with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. One should start giving first to his dependents. And the best object of charity is that which is given by a wealthy person (from the money which is left after his expenses). And whoever abstains from asking others for some financial help, Allah will give him and save him from asking others, Allah will make him self-sufficient. 18 To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you don t know. There is (however) no reproach for you (if you withhold means necessary) for a living. And begin (charity) with your dependents; and the upper hand is better than the lower hand. (Muslim, Zakat, 97) سلم قال : ال ح س د إ ال ف ي اثنتين : لى ا لل عليه و ي ا لل عنه عن الن ب ي ص ض ود ر 17. عن ابن مسع ل مها )متفق ي ب ها وي ع قض ة فه و ي ا لل ح كم ج ل آتاه ور فسلطه على هلكت ه ف ي الح ق اال ا لل م رج ل آتاه عليه( Narrated by Ibn Mas ud (May Allah be pleased with him) that Allah Apostle (peace be upon him said that: Do not wish to be like anyone except in two cases. (The first is) A person, whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously, (the second is) the one whom Allah has given wisdom (the Holy Qur an) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others. 19 - Do not withhold what you have, lest Allah withhold provision from you! In another narration (Muslim, Zakat 88) it was reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that: Spend and do not calculate, (for) Allah would calculate in your case; and do not hoard, otherwise Allah would be withholding from you. (Bukhari, Zakat, 21; Muslim, Zakat, 88) د قة )متفق ب ي صلى ا سلم قال : " ة الطي ب ي ا لل عنه أن الن ض لل عليه و الكل م ة ص يرة ر عن أب ي ه ر عليه(.19 Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that: and a good word is a Sadaqa. (Bukhari, Adab, 34, Jihad, 128, Muslim, Zakat, 56) D) JALI TALIQ Only one of the texts given below will be written. Turkish couplets should be written in two lines. The nib of the pen should not be narrower than 8 mm. The width of panels should not be shorter than 35 cm and the height of the panel should not be longer than 100 cm. Provided to be between these sizes, contestants may use any size of their choosing. الف قر قات فن ع ما ه ي و إ ن ت خف وها و ت ؤت وها اء فه و خ ير لك م. )سورة البقرة اآلية ٠٧٦ ( 1. إ ن ت بد وا الصد If ye disclose (acts of) charity, even so it is well, but if ye conceal them, and make them reach those (really) in need, that is best for you... (Al-Baqara, 2: 271) ا ت ن ف ق وا م ن ش يء فإ ن ا لل ب ه لن تنال وا الب ر ح تى ت ن ف ق وا م ما ت ح ب ون و م عل يم. )سورة آل ع مران اآلية ٣٠ (.2 By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you give (freely) of that which you love; and whatever you give, Allah surely knows it. Spend out of (the bounties) We have provided for you, before the Day comes when no bargaining (Will avail), nor friendship nor intercession. Those who reject Faith they are the wrong-doers. Allah is free of all wants, and He is Most-Forbearing. Cancel not your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury,- like those who spend their substance to be seen of men, but believe neither in Allah nor in the Last Day. They are in parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil: on it falls heavy rain, which leaves it (Just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with aught they have earned.
