1 TRANSCRIPT FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHER PROGRAM INTERIOR STUDY DAY SCREEN GRAPHIC: ACMA logo with the text Australian Communications and Media Authority, the Australian Government logo, and the text cyber (smart:). SCREEN GRAPHIC: Cybersmart Pre-Service Teacher program SCREEN GRAPHIC: What is the Cybersmart Pre-Service Teacher program? with Greg Gebhart in front of cyber (smart:) logo. SCREEN GRAPHIC: Greg Gebhart, ACMA Cybersmart Senior Trainer The Pre-Service Teacher program provides a whole range of strategies and resources for young graduate teachers to actually come into schools and be fully equipped on how to deal with cybersafety issues. In particular we cover things like cyberbullying, inappropriate use of technology, inappropriate images that are posted online Images of students in a classroom using computers and phones, then Greg Gebhart lecturing to teachers. the safe use of social networking, emerging trends that children are being exposed to, and of course we cover the legal situation as well. Many of the young teachers that are joining the workforce don t really understand some of these issues that are happening in schools, and what we want to try and do is run programs where many of these young educators are now fully competent to run programs and understand what most of the risks and concerns are in schools Images of teachers speaking amongst themselves. 2 and effectively change what s happening with children. The Pre-Service Teacher program is available right across Australia. We offer it to every university and it s free of charge. And what we d like to see is universities becoming involved in what s really an exciting opportunity to further enhance the development of young teachers when they enter the workforce. Images of the Cybersafety Outreach folder and handouts. The program involves a 50 minute lecture and a 90 minute tutorial, which comes with a complete kit of resources for everyone that is involved. The Australian Communications and Media Authority also provide trainers to assist in the delivery and all our trainers come from strong education backgrounds with a strong commitment to cybersafety in education. SCREEN GRAPHIC: How can graduate teachers help their students? It s very important that teachers have a good understanding of what the issues are that children are facing and how to deal with those. Images of various ACMA resources, such as Cybersmart Guide for Families and The Smart Guide to SOCIALISING ON THE INTERNET. The ACMA have a whole range of programs that we offer online that can assist teachers to make a big difference in how children use the technology. Images of teachers at a lecture, students using computers, and teachers speaking with one another. ACMA Cybersmart Page 2 of 5 July 2014
3 It s also important that teachers understand the duty of care, and with so many children using technology, whether its mobile devices or online technology both in and out of classrooms, it s important that the teachers do understand how they can protect themselves and how to make sure that schools are safe environments online. SCREEN GRAPHIC: How effective is the Pre-Service Teacher program? The Pre-Service Teacher program is very effective because we know that many of the teachers are saying, We now have valuable skills that can make a difference in our classroom. We know where the resources are, we know what is being provided by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, and those resources are making a big difference in our schools. Graduate teachers have said that it s actually been a fantastic way for them to understand what s really happening out there in education. For many of the graduates, they ve said this is the first time that they ve really understood what s actually happening. They ve had a great understanding of what resources are available and they feel confident about going into classrooms and making a big difference with children. SCREEN GRAPHIC: Why is the Pre-Service Teacher program so important? SCREEN GRAPHIC: Maria Vassiliadis, Manager, ACMA Cybersafety Outreach with Maria Vassiliadis in front of cyber (smart:) logo. The Pre-Service Teacher program is the first in Australia and in fact internationally. It offers final year student teachers the cybersafety information and resources you will need to help your future students stay safe online. ACMA Cybersmart Page 3 of 5 July 2014
4 Images of students in a classroom and Greg Gebhart lecturing to teachers. Knowing how to use the Internet and online technologies safely is the key to children having positive online experiences. Teachers have a vital role to play here. They can help to educate students about the risks and they can teach them the strategies to help minimize those risks so that they can have a safe online experience. Cybersafety programs have been very successful with teachers because for many of the teachers, they may not have used the technology, or if they have used or do use the technology, they re probably using it in quite a different way to what young people are, and for us to be able to up-skill those teachers to make sure they have a really good understanding of what s happening is really important for us. And the feedback we re getting from teachers, they re saying, Yes, this is making a difference and now we fully understand how we can implement programs in our school. Various images of the Pre-Service Teacher program lectures showing the trainers and teachers with the following screen graphics. SCREEN GRAPHIC: Absolutely fantastic, engaging, exciting session.
