1 Oklahoma Wesleyan University Academic Affairs Committee CFAC/Miller Conference Room January 4, 10:00 a.m. Members present: Bob Myers (Chair), Brett Andrews, Bob Bonner, David Eaton, Julie Fowler (traditional student rep), Gail Richardson, Emile Hawkins, Wendell Thompson, Mark Weeter, Kyle White, Andrea Zepeda (AGS student rep). Members absent: Becky Le (Beth VonBuchwald attended in her place) 1. Registrar Policy Issues Becky Tupper Current practices are making additional work for her office. The Registrar s Office is no longer doing audits for traditional undergraduates until a graduation application is submitted. This task will fall to the advisor. For May graduation, the graduation application is due Sept. 1. SCT requires an actual date for posting. The Registrar s Office is asking for support for posting date as the last day of the month. If degree is posted in December, the graduate must walk in December. They can no longer walk in the following May ceremony. This will affect AGS and Traditional graduates. Spring Break date in the catalog is incorrect. Classes will resume on Tuesday, March 25. Becky will send the correct calendar to all faculty. Rosters will still be printed by the Registrar s Office. The office needs help getting forms, etc. to adjunct instructors. For this coming semester, the deans will see to it that the adjunct instructors get the rosters class schedule draft is due from deans today. Registration is Monday, Jan 7 from 9:00am-12:00pm. Advisors also need to be available in the afternoon for walk-ins. 2. Academic Honesty Wording Mark Weeter Motion by Mark Weeter: The following procedure be adopted and added to the catalog. Procedure: Once a professor discovers a case of academic dishonesty, the professor will begin the following process: 1. The professor will respond to the first instance of dishonesty by clarifying academic expectations and endeavoring to help the student grow. The professor has the right to have the student redo the assignment, reduce the grade of the assignment, or fail the assignment. The professor will notify in writing, the Dean of the School in which the Course was offered, the Dean of the School to which the student belongs, and the Office of Academic Affairs outlining the incident and its resolution. 2. Typically, the professor will decide upon disciplinary action for the first infraction of a given student. For the second (and any subsequent infractions) the professor, the Dean School in which course was offered, and the Dean of the School to which the student belongs will make a disciplinary decision while also informing the Office of Academic Affairs. In general, students should expect to fail the assignment for their first offense at OWU, to fail the course for a second offense, to be suspended for a full semester for a third offense, and to be expelled for a fourth offense. If the disciplinary action involves suspension or expulsion the Chief Student Life Officer must also be involved in the decision making process. 3. If a student wishes to appeal s/he may appeal to the Office of Academic Affairs, which is the final appeal _AAC_Minutes.doc 1 of 8
2 4. When plagiarism or cheating is discovered after grades have been assigned, grades will be adjusted as appropriate and disciplinary action can be taken as long as the student is enrolled at OWU. Motion carried. Note: Summative assessment statement has been removed for the time being because the practice is not being carried out in every major. 3. Organizational Management Degree Emile Hawkins Motion by Emile Hawkins: The creation of a new Bachelors of Science degree, Organizational Management (OM). The program will be designed to deliver via the Office of Adult & Graduate Studies either on ground or online or both. (See Addendum #3 for the courses that compose the degree requirements.) Second: Brett Andrews. Motion carried. 4. General Education Proposal Brett Andrews Motion by Brett Andrews: To accept the slate of courses (see Addendum #4) as the general education requirements for the following undergraduate AGS Degrees: Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Science. It would not apply to the RN-BSN degree requirements. Second: David Eaton. Motion carried. 5. Addition and Deletion of Majors Gail Richardson Motion by Gail Richardson: Delete the following majors Biblical Studies/Worship Arts (0 majors) Church Music (2 majors) Second: David Eaton Pastoral Ministry/Music Ministry (2 majors) Second: Brett Andrews. Motion carried. Motion by Gail Richardson: Add the following major (See Addendum #5) Worship Arts (replaces above majors) The Bachelor of Arts in Worship Arts degree will synthesize music, music ministry, and religion in preparation for Christian service. This program includes 63 hours in music and music-related ministry as well as 6 hours in religion. All students pursuing this major must take guitar lessons and participate in an internship through a local church. Second: David Eaton. Motion carried _AAC_Minutes.doc 2 of 8
3 Motion by Gail Richardson: Delete the following majors Music Education/Instrumental Music Composition The Music Education/Instrumental degree has only 3 majors, 2 who are graduating next year. The university cannot afford to set up and maintain this program with full-time faculty as well as top musicians to instruct give instruction in each instrument. Adjuncts become very expensive for only 1 or 2 students and the small numbers result in frustration for anyone directing the band. In addition, the band director has to hire additional players for performances, which depletes the music budget even further. Maintaining and repairing band instruments is also an additional expense. Music Composition has 0 majors and we have no qualified faculty. Second: Bob Bonner. Motion carried. 6. Creation of Philosophy Minor David Eaton Rationale: The minor in philosophy supports our emphasis on apologetics and the fact that in intercultural studies we talk about worldview, which leads directly to cultural philosophy. If we want to know the heart of what a culture believes and holds as truth, we must know its philosophy. It is taking missionary studies to the deepest level. (See Addendum #6.) It will be discussed at a future meeting. Meeting adjourned: 11:05am. Respectively submitted, Cindy Riffe Office of Academic Affairs _AAC_Minutes.doc 3 of 8
4 Addendum #3 Emile Hawkins: Proposal: The School of Business proposes the creation of a new Bachelors of Science degree, Organizational Management (OM).
