First, the faculty of Tarleton s College of Education and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction are happy to welcome you to our graduate program! We look forward to working with you as you complete the exciting next phase of your academic journey! What is the purpose of this orientation? To successfully guide you through our program, we invite you to review important program planning information prior to enrolling in your first semester coursework.

3 Mission To provide a relevant, research-based curriculum that develops the capacity for leadership through mastery of knowledge, effective communication, collaboration, inquiry, and decision-making to ensure learner success. Goals Knowledge of research-based curriculum and instruction best practices prepares students to identify, evaluate and investigate best practice in the field of Curriculum and Instruction. Application of curriculum and instruction best practices prepares students to implement best practices in classroom and leadership roles. Communication of best practices in curriculum and instruction to professional audiences prepares students to contribute to the field of Curriculum and Instruction through discourse with fellow professionals.

5 What coursework is required of all M.Ed. students? Everyone who graduates with an M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction completes 12 common course hours What courses differentiate my M.Ed. program? Each M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction includes different course hours the area of concentration

6 Does my M.Ed. concentration area require Texas certification tests? To meet Texas public school certification requirements, students with concentrations in Educational Diagnostician and Professional Reading Specialist must also pass state certification tests. Concentration area advisors can clarify certification questions. Does my M.Ed. concentration area require additional coursework? Occasionally, students with insufficient undergraduate background may be required to complete additional leveling courses.

8 Before enrolling your first semester Complete the online Program Orientation Submit the Orientation Completion Form. your concentration area preference as requested to the department administrative assistant. Contact your concentration area advisor for enrollment advisement and release of enrollment holds. Enrolling in subsequent semesters Contact your concentration area advisor for advisement or program completion questions. Semester you are enrolled in EDUC 5398 Techniques of Research Contact your concentration area advisor to develop a faculty committee Complete and submit your required Degree Plan. Semester BEFORE you graduate Apply for graduation the semester BEFORE graduation (check dates posted on graduate college website). FINAL semester Enroll in your concentration area capstone class where you will complete your Capstone project Comprehensive exam. Graduate Satisfaction Survey.

9 Self-Management - manage your time well. Know your program requirements and timetables. Don t assume anything - Verify. Keep a file of all written correspondence. Be Proactive - think and plan ahead. Review your progress with your advisor. Cope with and actively seek constructive criticism. Address problems earlier rather than later. Monitor your university !

10 Completion Time Limit Course credits more than 6 years old may not be counted for a degree. Credits are considered to be earned when they are recorded on the official transcript. Drop Students may drop online within the designated add/drop period. Once the add/drop/late registration period has ended, students MUST submit a Q drop form request to the Registrar Office in order to be dropped from a class. Withdraw Withdrawing means a student withdraws from all of their courses. Students may withdraw from all their classes through mygateway prior to the first day of classes. GPA Requirements Graduate students are expected to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA on work completed. If a student s overall GPA falls below a 2.0 he/she will be automatically suspended. Readmission/Reactivation Students who have not attended Tarleton for 1 year are required to submit a new graduate application along with the $30 application fee and essay. For students who did not attend Tarleton for a period less than 1 year, he/she must submit a Reactivation Form. STUDENTS ARE NOT AUTOMATICALLY WITHDRAWN FROM THE UNIVERSITY IF THEY DO NOT ATTEND CLASS. STUDENTS MAY BE FINANCIALLY AND ACADEMICALLY IMPACTED IF THEY DO NOT PROPERLY WITHDRAW FROM THE UNIVERSITY.

11 Online Class Access The Blackboard LMS is used to deliver online instruction. Blackboard Training & Information provides tips for new/current students unfamiliar with online instruction. Monitor your student account during the week before classes begin for preliminary course information online instructors often send. the instructor of record for details.
