7 USING YOUR EDUCATION AND LEARNING KNOWLEDGE Teaching Many students who are studying programmes in Education are often considering a career in teaching. Some of you may already be working in an educational setting, either full time or part time, and are hoping eventually to train as a teacher. This could be through the more traditional PGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education or Postgraduate Certificate in Education) route, or through employment based routes (School Direct or School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) or flexible programmes. If you are not currently working in a school, and need school-based work experience, the Careers Centre may be able to help you gain the practical experience that you need. Anyone considering a teaching career should first look at the Careers Centre web site for advice about obtaining experience, researching teaching information, selection criteria and how to apply. In the Careers Resources section there is a useful booklet Routes into Teaching which covers the different options available for teacher training. You can always contact the Careers Centre if you need further advice. Make sure that you do your research regarding appropriate qualifications and modular choices that you may have from your first year onwards, and gain schoolbased experience before the beginning of your final year. Applications for PGCE/School Direct places should be made in November of the final year of your degree programme for the PGCE! A Year Between Getting a place on a PGCE programme can be very competitive and many graduates who are unsuccessful in their first attempt will take a year out and apply again. If you are unsuccessful in your application, (and you will probably know this by the spring of your final year), you should look to apply for employment related to teaching which will enhance your PGCE application. The best place to look for these vacancies is on local authority vacancy websites where you will see such jobs as After School Club Assistant/Manager, Classroom Assistants, Learning Support Assistants, Teaching Assistants and others. Early Years Teacher Status Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) recognises the skills and experience needed by those who lead practice, working with young children from birth to five. EYTS is a status that will recognise your expertise as a practitioner and a professional leader although it does not provide Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which is the status required to teach in maintained schools in England. If you have EYTS you can apply for Early Years Teacher vacancies in academies, free schools and private childcare and education providers. EYTS is designed to be appropriate for anyone interested in working in early years, whether it is someone who already has a wealth of experience in early years, new graduates or 7

8 people looking for a career change.
